  1. I wanted one of those medicus power meters but wasn't willing to pay the $99 they were asking. Out of curiosity I mentioned to the guy at golftown that I didn't see them in the store but had seen them just a few days earlier. He says "yeah, we aren't carrying them anymore and got rid of them all at $5 a pop." He searched the other stores for me and surprisingly was able to get me one which I just picked up an hour ago as I type this. Played with it just a little and I love the instant feedback, especially since I just went to an interlocking grip a couple of days ago. Power meter shows I've picked up as much as 8 mph (much better release). Goodbye baseball grip.
  2. Get her her own clubs. They needn't be expensive but they do need to fit her. I'd start her going no more than waist high on the backswing. It won't take her long to start making good consistent contact. Then she'll be excited to get some lessons.
  3. My swing has been seriously messed up. The end of last season and so far this golf season, golf has just not been any fun for me. I had made so many changes to what I was doing that I had done what felt like irreparable harm to my swing. No distance, everything slicing. The more I read or listened to the more messed up I got. Trust me folks, it was bad. So yesterday I bought a medicus in what was strictly a desperation move. After just 5 or 10 minutes in the back yard I was able to swing the club without it breaking. Today was the real test though. I warmed up with it before my round and started out with pretty good results.... not great but good. More of a fade than a slice and better contact. Things started falling apart on the back 9 though and I started casting pretty badly. The problem was that the medicus had shown me all the mistakes I had been making (take back too quick and not done with shoulders, not getting toe of club pointed up, not parallel to target at full backswing, left elbow bending on take back, not staying inside on swing, stopping the club and not following through the ball after contact) but there was too much going on in my head. I was trying to correct too many things at once. Also, it was a fairly quick pace and I did not feel I had the time to take out the medicus and find my swing between real swings. My buddy and I then decided we would play a 2nd round which I was very much up for as I knew I needed repetition. Many more people on the golf course at this point so play was much much slower. I warmed up with my medicus for a good 15 minutes before teeing off and alternated between practice swings with my medicus and practice swings with my real driver. Struggled for about three holes but because of the slow play just kept practicing and practicing my swing. By the 4th hole things started to click. The takeaway all the way through to the top of my back swing was now automatic and I didn't have to think about it any longer. Now I could think about coming inside and concentrating on that. Another hole or two goes by and that part now is automatic and I"m not thinking about that. So now my concentration is just on following through and proper weight shift. Holy Moley, I'm hitting my drives strajight. Straight left of my target but the flight of the ball is straight. I notice on the fairway that I'm spinning as I swing so I make an adjustment with my feet and point my toes inward just a little. All of a sudden I'm hitting my targets. Everything is starting to click and I'm gaining confidence. Shot after shot is flying true and far and all of a sudden golf is fun again. For me the medicus has been a life saver. I can't wait to get out there again. The medicus is staying in my bag and I'll be using it a lot at the driving range and for warming up with before every round. My buddy who I play with 3 times a week was relieved to see me having fun again. I don't know how good a tool it would be for somebody who already has a pretty good swing but for someone struggling as much as I was, this is a good purchase. I doubt that a lesson would have straightened me out as quickly as my medicus. I don't see myself trying to hit golf balls with it although supposedly you can. But as I said, I'll be using it daily to fortify my swing and create the all important muscle memory of the proper swing mechanics.
  4. I've long had the idea of a pay per view option I like to call "Tiger Vision". This would follow Tiger and his group exclusively. Every shot traced. Yardages and club selection for every shot. The results of every shot clearly shown with yardages hit. Maybe even mic Tiger's caddy. I"m really surprised this hasn't been done yet. And all commercial free of course.
  5. I use the "club caddy". Best $20 I ever spent. Not only does it keep my grips dry but it makes it almost impossible to not see your wedge "standing up" on the green when you leave the hole.
  6. I think I'm the last living north american who does not have a cell phone.
  7. I'm pretty patient out on the golf course. I don't let many of the things you describe bother me at all. I don't care if people talk or are moving or whatever. I consider those kinds of distractions to be a mental challenge. Generally speaking, I play against myself and not against my foursome, I play to have fun, enjoy time spent with friends, and to relieve stress and I have fairly firm grasp on my game and its limitations. I know I'm not going on tour. The ony thing that gets me is extremely slow play. Not that the time it's taking upsets me but that it just really throws me out of rythm.
  8. I gamed the XLS last year and quite liked it. The Speedline is longer for me though.

    Moe Norman

I've messed around with his swing some in the past. Only with the driver though. I had some good results. If I had the money I'd go to the school and really give it a fair shake. Don't have the money though :(

He wasn't that short. Maybe in his late years he was shorter but if I remember right he was in the 280 range with his driver on average.

    Moe Norman

I don't remember where I saw/read this story but it goes like this... Moe was known to not concentrate on his putting. He'd just walk up to his ball and hit it without reading the green or anything. The press was watching him this one time and they were giving him grief over it. Moe got upset, tee'd up his ball, hit it, and... while the ball was still in the air turned to those people and exclaimed "I won't be putting today" and sure enough... hole in one. Moe's a legend to be sure. Probably some myth worked into the truth. I do know he carried a wooden tee in his pocket and used that same tee for over 10 years and also once exclaimed "I haven't hit a ball out of bounds in 11 years".

    Moe Norman

Well the question was "what's the big deal with Moe Norman" and the answer has nothing to do with who won the most championships. Here's a piece that espn did on Moe. can't get the link to work but just go to youtube and type in moe norman espn

    Moe Norman

Hey I'm not trying to convince anybody about anything but I've heard Lee Trevino, Vijay Singh, Tiger Woods and others talk about Moe. He was by no means the greatest golfer of all time but he was the greatest ball striker of all time imo. Moe was a functioning autistic. There was no doubt he had the ability to play on the tour but as you can imagine, he did not fit in. Take the time to read about him and you'll read some amazing stories and some heart breaking ones too.

Allow me to quote Tiger Woods... “Only two players have ever truly owned their swings Moe Norman and Ben Hogan,”
  15. It would have a lot to do with your individual stroke wouldn't it? Paricularly if you press. In Phil Mickelson's dvd "Secrets of the Short Game" he says what loft is ideal for contact while putting but I can't offhand remember what it was (I believe it was 2 or 3 degrees).
  16. Moe Norman.
  17. You should probably put a post in golf talk if you want to discuss this. I will say however that your dad is right. I don't want to say it is impossible but well, it's impossible. There are other jobs in the golf industry though if you love it that much. My advice to you is to think about business courses, accounting courses, sports administration, etc. In that way you'll be working to a much more realistic goal that can open all kinds of doors for you, in or out of the golf industry.
  18. I love my S9's. You'll be happy with them guaranteed if you go that way. Very forgiving.
  19. I had an R9 460. I did not find it overly forgiving and also found a loss of distance. I believe it is more suited to higher swing speeds. jmo
  20. I use and love the giant Winn grip. To answer the question though, think you should know pretty much immediately.
  21. I had a ping mallet and went to a ping blade this year. I have not noticed any difference in alligning my shots. In fact I kind of like the blade better. But keeping the allignment through the swing can be a little trickier. To that end I got one of those big thick putter grips which helped greatly.
  22. I was drawing a little frowny, happy, or determined face on my balls but decided it was more trouble than it was worth. I almost always play earling morning and the ink was coming off a little too easily so I pretty much don't bother with anything these days since they guys I play with don't use the same balls as me anyway. My club championship is this week and I purchased those golfdotz thingines to mark my balls with. They are not worth the price imo but it's ok for a once a year thing. They are almost $7 for 12 markers. They certainly were easy to apply. Whether or not they'll hold up is another question.
  23. I've searched and searched in the past and could find nothing. Golf Digest has a hot list for golf balls but I find it pretty useless as they give the vaguest of information on the balls they are recommending. There is a pay site out there that professs to be able to match your game/swing to the proper golf ball but I cannot remember off hand what it was called.
  24. I've only played from the tips twice and during those two occasions I teed off at 6 am so we were not going to hold anybody up. The course I play isn't the longest.. listed as just 6516 from the tips (it's a little longer than that) and 6095 from the reds. My driver is consistently 210 to 230. I tend to swing my irons and a fairly slow tempo looking for accuracy more than distance. Yes I use my driver a lot. As a result I'm more comfortable off the tee with a driver than with anything else. I'm also comfortable hitting lower lofted irons and my hybrids. If I'm within 160 I expect to hit the green. Let me reiterate though... I've only played from the blues twice. I did it for variety since we play the same course all the time. And there is basically nobody else on the course. I enjoyed it. Yes, I am regularly in the mid to high 80's although I did go through a bad stretch this year for reasons I won't go into here but have posted elsewhere.
  25. and I bet they'd be doing the same no matter where they were playing from. Regardless, the problem is not that they can only hit their 5 iron so many yards, it is that they are inconsiderate of others.
