How to Hit a Driver (Hit it Further and Stop Slicing!)
Slugox replied to mvmac's topic in Swing Thoughts
Thank you. I'm going to give this a try at the range tomorrow. To my knowledge, I'm not aiming left. I feel like I'm setup straight down the fairway. The reality, well... -
How to Hit a Driver (Hit it Further and Stop Slicing!)
Slugox replied to mvmac's topic in Swing Thoughts
My big miss is the high slice. Is moving the aim of the hips/shoulders to the right designed to kind of balance out the swinging left/out to in that causes it? -
Interesting. I probably wouldn't go goalie until round 7-8-9 myself. There's certainly numerous ways to do it.
-
Both of those statements are true. So, the entire NHLPA is granted free agency in a redraft. You have the first overall pick. You're taking a goalie?
-
A dynamic number one center is way more important in team building, imo. As for overall, it's a QB.
-
I feel your pain. We have Lundqvist eating up the cap for a few more years yet. It's no longer a goalie league, gotta stop overpaying these guys to stay.

The two things I'm trying to focus on currently are: 1) Shortening my backswing. Seems once my left arm reaches 90 degrees or so, my left elbow begins to bend in an effort to get the club to the top, but my shoulders are no longer turning at that point and it feels like that's just increasing my chances of getting out of sequence in transition and on the dowswing. 2) Steady head. This is also probably related to the above somewhat. When my elbow bends in trying to pull the club farther back, I feel like it's also forcing my shouldsr into my chin and moving my head away from the ball.

Therein lies one of my struggles. I'll hit my driver towards the heel when I miss, and I'll hit my irons towards the toe when I miss. Seems there should be a findable happy medium in there somewhere, and I intend to find it.

Why do so many golfers think short game is holding them back?
Slugox replied to Lihu's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Exactly. I'm well aware the most significant gains I'll ever make will come because of the full swing. And I don't equate the short game importance to that. However, the type of improvement I am currently seeking at my level is to eliminate shots that are a complete waste. It's one thing to be in greenside rough because of inaccurate ballstriking, and quite another to be chopping a ball around in the spinach because you don't have a quality/reliable pitch or chip shot that will get you somewhere on the green in one shot with a chance to salvage the hole. That is where I am currently, lamenting the shots that serve no purpose to my game other than to add a "1" to my scorecard. -
I've been Playing Golf for: This is season two for me My current handicap index or average score is: 20 My typical ball flight is: Driver high fade, irons straight or slight draw The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Driver high massive OB-seeking slice, irons overdraw/pull-draw It's the offseason, or really close to it, and I'm hoping to prioritize and do some quality swing work over the winter. My typical rounds are upper 80's/low 90's, so obviously there is no shortage of things to work on. Reading this forum has been fascinating and informative. So I come for help, and advice. :) Videos:

The leaves don't help in finding the more adventurous drives. I hate that the season is ending.

Winter should be abolished. I'm not a fan. The sooner I can move to Florida the better. :)

Why do so many golfers think short game is holding them back?
Slugox replied to Lihu's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm kind of this way. I mean, my long game needs work, as does my short game. But fresh in my mind is my most recent round where duffed/flubbed chips dominated my scorecard, to the tune of maybe half a dozen lost shots. I'm not going to become a scratch golfer by addressing only my short game deficiencies, but it will help with the next significant step forward. Of that I am certain. It should also be the quickest way to lower scores as well. -
Clearly, the solution is bigger clubs. :) I've seen any number of comments calling my clubs (TM M2's) "shovels". I love them. Last year before I bought them I went out and hit everything that even remotely interested me, and these were by far the best for me. And it's gotten consistently better since. Not that I think I'm a great ball striker, but currently what is killing me most is my short game. My last round I lost 5-6 shots on chipping/pitching alone. Yes, I left that many short of the green and double-pitched. Actually, on one hole it took three. What is the best shot to learn and work on for getting out of reasonably thick/deep greenside rough? Apologies for rambling off topic.

I wont get to 20 rounds until next year some time. I'm at 11 now, and typically play Fridays. Either way, my scores are in a predicatble range, and I have plenty of things I see to work on. The drive continues.

What ball, and why
Slugox replied to paininthenuts's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I played various balls last year (my first season) before settling on the ProV1. Then this year I thought I'd try a few other. TM Project a, Callaway Chrome Soft Truvis, Bridgestone e6 chief among them. THe e6 is a really good ball for me, I liked it. I have yet to hit anything resembling a decent shot with the Chrome Soft. Makes no legitimate sense but the fact remains. I've come back around to the ProV1 and am back to hitting some of the best shots I can hit. It's settled, I'm a Titleist man. -
4-5 on solid contact for me. Probably 7-8 on the range since there's so much more time to groove the swing. If I hit the sweet spot, it's probably just luck. I don't have that kind of control or ability to do everything perfectly where it wasn't just a fortunate accident. :)

I'll say lob wedge, but really it's anything inside 100 yards. I need to learn to flight my wedges, as I badly struggle with distance consistency. I'll be 90 yards out and grab a sand wedge, then come up 10 yards short. Next time, I'll club up to gap wedge and still be 10 yards short. It's obviously mental, but I figure flighting wedges and learning reliable 1/2 and 3/4 distances with at least one club will save me from myself.

I have all kinds of reminders going through my head as I set up over the ball, trying to be sure I'm ready and comfortable. However, during the swing it's probably two. One for the backswing and one for the downswing.

The 9th hole on my regular course is a reasonably short par 5 at 475. The tee shot goes out straight to about 240ish where there's a bunker. Then it's straight left to the green from there. So, a good drive cuts the corner heavily (over some trees and large mounds/hills) leaving you anywhere from 200 or less in. Anyway, my drive had me sitting at 198 out. The green is elevated, and the majority of the front center is protected by a bunker. To reward myself for my drive, I grabbed a 5-wood. I flushed it. It sailed high and straight and carried the bunker, rolling out to about 20 feet for eagle. I panicked and left that putt way short, but drained the birdie to recover. That was a really fun 5-wood shot to watch. Easily my best one ever from the fairway.

That makes sense. Thank you. I have no delusions of grandeur, I was just kinda surprised it was that low. I'm sure I have 11 more rounds in that general vicinity, but I don't recall them accurately. Regardless, I can see and feel the improvement, and that is enough to make me happy.

On my profile, I put mine as 20 as a guess. But I just used an online calculator (golfsoftware.com) plugging in my last 9 rounds and it came back with 14.8. I'm in the bogey golfer range. Is that number viable?

89 (47-42). Among other savviness, I lost 5 balls OB. I s truck the ball very solidly, for me. Improvement is definitely happening, even if it doesn't always look like it. I hate that the season is winding down.

Love Jon Rahm. I'd mimic that swing if I could.
