The grip and how it effects your release
ItsAllRelative replied to Ringer's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
thanks a lot to the op. i've never really given consideration to the idea that i may have a poor grip. tried moving my left thumb today on my driver, and it has almost completely cured my release timing. i've always had a problem fighting a fade. my drives are anywhere from straight to fade to slice, depending on my release. today i was either straight, small draw, or small fade. much more consistent. -
A special club for getting out from under trees
ItsAllRelative replied to B-Con's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
i just learned this shot at the range this week. i take my 3iron, play the ball off my back heel, and keep my hands in front of the ball. swing hard and take a divot. i can carry it 110 yards while only getting 5 feet off the ground, it's actually a really fun shot to play with. -
taylormade tp black. doesn't spin off the driver, great feel, spins and checks around the green. durable too.

That's definitely one of the hardest parts, playing by every rule. It makes low scores much more rewarding though, knowing I made that birdie by the same rules as everybody else. The mental game is my only problem now. When I get relaxed and stay calm, I can play great golf. The problem is once I start thinking too hard...

What's been helping me with those putts is to take a little bit longer to line them up and set up for them. Take an extra moment to double-check your read, then take a practice swing and watch the imaginary ball roll right into the cup. Then, step up and make a CONFIDENT putt. I've made more than one putt outside of my usual range just by simply convincing myself that I am going to drop the putt.

This is my first season of being serious about the game of golf, practicing a couple times a week and playing at least once. My goal for the summer is to break 90 at least once, just to know that I am improving. I shot 90 today. I was very excited to shoot a new low score, but somewhat frustrated that I only missed my goal by a stroke. The game is definitely harder when taken seriously, but also much more rewarding. I'll try again for my 89 on Saturday. Any motivational thoughts or tips?

definitely the mental game. it takes me 3 or 4 holes to get relaxed enough to play good golf sometimes. yesterday i had a horrible front nine, couldn't get going at all. turned and shot +5 on the back. go figure.

Yeah, the water is VERY dirty. When I was younger, a couple buddies and I spent about an hour in a pond on the home course here. Came away with a 5 gallon bucket each. Took about a week of washing my hands to get my fingernail coloring back to normal though... Edit: Those golf balls smelled AWFUL too.

Agreed. If I go to a range just to hit balls, I end up subconciously making a swing change for the worse, or trying to see how far I can fly my driver. Both cases put me in a worse spot than before. I like to play a round, and make mental notes of what shots gave me the most trouble or cost me the most strokes, and then work on those parts of the game throughout the week before I go play again. Lately, I've been going to the home course and chipping a lot, as it's been costing me the most strokes on the course. Before that, I spent 3 nights at the range sorting out issues with my driver.

Haha no, not at all. One bucket one night, then I went back and hit another bucket the next night. I'd hit a wedge shot or two every 15 swings with the driver, just to change it up and keep my sanity. My driver is the only club in my bag im not 100% confident with at the moment, and I finally figured out why I've been yanking it left lately.

Took me 2 large buckets of balls to realize I've been standing too close to the ball on my drives lately.

I like to make the earliest tee times possible, most of the slower players won't get up that early to play golf at my local courses.

I LOVE my Nike Sumo driver. As stated earlier, the good shots with this driver are ridiculously long.
-
Exactly. Are you happy with your putter? I find that there is nothing more comforting than confidence with your putter. There's nothing better than knowing that once you're on the green, the hole is taken care of. I'd place them in order of importance: putter > wedge > driver

I drive an old Volkswagen Jetta. It was free, and I am finishing college and still very poor. Can't wait to start a career and finance something nice.

I feel your pain. When I take my driver to the range, I can rip off perfect drive after perfect drive, on command. On the course, the fade creeps back in, sometimes borderline slice. It wouldn't bother me if I just truly sucked with the driver, but knowing I can hit it flawlessly on the range is the frustrating part. Definitely the most frustrating part of golf for me.

Accidentally got WAY too close to an aligator at my gpa's country club in Florida.

My thoughts exactly. I applaud your ability to govern your spending, I sure cannot control my wallet once I start looking at golf gear. I would look for an older set of quality clubs, namely a COMPLETE set 3-pw or whatever. Im playing older titleist dci 962 irons right now, I looked them up for fun a couple weeks ago and saw a set go for $100 on ebay. They play AMAZING, I haven't found a reason to replace them yet. You can find good deals on older models on ebay and craigslist.

I feel your pain. Second round of the season, I missed my best score every by one stroke. Two rounds since then have been absolutely AWFUL. However, within those rounds, I can manage to put together great holes and hit some amazing shots. At the end of the day, I just tell myself "that's golf," and remind myself that golf is THE hardest thing I've ever tried in my life. Playing a bad round does make me itch to get back on the course and shoot something better, even if it's only a one-stroke improvement.

How do YOU keep relaxed during a round?
ItsAllRelative replied to ItsAllRelative's topic in Golf Talk
I like this idea. I have a routine for putting and chipping, and somewhat of a routine for iron play. I realized today that I need a set, concrete routine for my swing. I like the idea of getting set up, then count to two and swing, regardless. I stood over the ball for what seemed like forever many times today, trying to clear my head so I could swing. Going to the range sometime soon to sort out some issues, and I will definitely focus on a routine of set up, count, swing. Thanks for the idea. I played today, and the front 9 was awful. I warmed up on the range and everything felt GREAT. Couldn't get relaxed and just play golf. On the back I managed to stop caring about my score and shot 10 strokes better. First time I've ever played 9 holes with the same ball haha. Thanks for the ideas, people. -
How do YOU keep relaxed during a round?
ItsAllRelative replied to ItsAllRelative's topic in Golf Talk
Great ideas so far everybody, thanks a lot. I think I get anxious on the course because I haven't shot a complete round that really represents how much my game has improved lately. I feel like I've fixed the "major" flaws in my swing and shotmaking ability this season, but don't have a definitive score to show for it and guage my progress. I'll get a great round going, and blow up on 16 and 17 (or something similar) and end up with a score I'm not happy with. I'm hoping that when I finally shoot a "good" score (whatever that may be), I'll be able to relax a bit and just play golf. -
How do YOU keep relaxed during a round?
ItsAllRelative replied to ItsAllRelative's topic in Golf Talk
I almost always walk, I hate to ride. My last round, I tried to keep a more "relaxed" feel, and ended up taking lazy/sloppy swings and playing a horrible round. I guess there's a difference between mental relaxing and physical? -
Do you buy your driver new or used?
ItsAllRelative replied to SteveSimp's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm in college. The only club in my bag bought new was my putter, lol. I can't wait for the day I can go be fitted for irons and a driver. -
My game is getting better, but the mental aspect is killing me. How do you all relax enough to just hit the shot and not worry about little details or "what if" thoughts? I tend to psych myself out on tough or important shots, usually shots I know I can hit. When I can stay calm and relaxed, I play great golf. Once I start thinking, it all goes downhill. What do you all do?

congrats. im "waiting for it to click" as well. i can shoot low 90s on a good day, but i always have 1 (sometimes two!) blow-up holes that end up 7s or (gasp) 8s. i just need on my mental game, im very happy with my swing and shot shapes. how do you keep your cool and keep from worrying too much about each shot?
