  1. OK, so I am on the 6th hole.......after a horrible drive and second shot, I hit a nice punch through the trees that just rolls off the back of the green......well, I get over the back of the green and there is no ball.....but, there is a cart path that banks to the left, goes underneath the road for at least 30 yards to the holes on the other side of the road.....we are playing a practice round, so I just take a penalty, drop, and play on.....the group behind us was already in the fairway.... Anyway, we finish up......we walk the long dark walk underneath the roadway.....I follow the path over to the creek where it ends out of morbid curiosity.....and there lies my ball, about 50 yards from the green, in a hazard on the other side of the road at the end of the cart path, LOL..... I'm guessing in tournament play the only/best option would be to just play the ball from where you originally hit it, but I will say that putting a manmade tunnel just off the back of the green brings up the question and validity of course design.... Any thoughts???
  2. It happens to me at least once a year.....pipe my drive, middle of the fairway, finally hit a nice long one.....another ball from another tee box headed up the other hole rolls out about 10 yards from mine.....we get held up, maybe help a buddy look for his ball, whatever.....the other group has gone and there is only one ball left in the fairway.....yep, you guessed it....my nice new ProV1X is now a 10 year old cut up Slazenger
  3. Shot an 89 today 2 birdies, 6 pars, 3 bogeys, 4 doubles, 3 triples 6 fairways, 6 greens in reg, 30 putts 6005 yards/69.2 rating/120 slope - tips on short course, target golf, lots of narrow fairways and irons off the tee Other than one hole, drove the ball solid most of the day Short game continuing to get better, decent putting and chipping A few loose iron shots at the exact wrong moment really hurt Cloudy but warm, 1 club wind Best drive - First tee, center cut, 290 yards, downhill Best iron - 3 iron off the tee, perfect strike, perfect ball flight Best putt - 12 footer from birdie, just off the green
  4. If you ever come to big D, shoot me a PM, we play every Sunday, regardless of whether or not there is an event. It’s time to get this party started – the crappy weather is over (fingers crossed) and course conditions are getting better every day. The management at Stevens Park is looking forward to having us out, the green fees are cheap, and the course is short. This is a great opportunity for scoring and a good warm-up for our first major coming in just a few weeks. If you have any friends or fellow golfers you’d like added to the email list, just let me know. April 18th – Stevens Park Please PM or email to sign up by Monday night. I’ll be booking tee the final tee times first thing Tuesday morning. If you’d like to be paired with someone specific, mention that too – I will do my best to accommodate. Green fees are only $14, with a cart for the loop coming in at $13. The first groups will be going off at 2pm – check-in will be held from 1-1:30pm. Depending on the size of the event (16 or more), we might be required to ride, but the course management seems really supportive and maybe able to flex with us (for those that want to walk) as long as we keep up our pace of play. http://www.stevensparkgolf.com/ This hilly course along the banks of the Coombs Creek offers numerous scenic views of Kessler Park flora as well as the downtown skyline. Stevens Park is five minutes southwest of downtown. It is a popular destination for downtown businesses and residents. • 18-Hole Championship Course • 6,005 yards • Par 71 • Greens: 328 Bermuda • Fairways and Tees: 419 Bermuda • Rough: Common Bermuda Thanks, Jason
  5. Will stick with my pre-tourney picks: Els Goosen Freddie
  6. Most courses I play the tips, but those over 7000 yards are a bit hard to swallow....I prefer between 6500 and 7000 yards.... Here is the Big Perm's Guide to proper tees (patent pending) Shortest par 3, you should be hitting a 8-9 iron.....Longest par 3, long/mid iron or hybrid Shortest par 4, Driver and wedge....Longest par 4, Driver and long iron/hybrid Shortest par 5, reachable in 2 with 2 good shots.....Longest par 5, almost impossible to reach in 2 If you are hitting long irons into most par 4's, move up......if it's Driver/wedge on most par 4's, you need to move back or go on tour

    golf irons

I hadn't heard that forged or non-forged makes a difference......I'm actually thinking about picking up some used S58's or S57's this coming winter, so kinda interested to hear if the club material makes any difference????
  8. 90% of golfters play 3 or 4 times a year.....they go out to have fun, play in scrambles, hack the ball around, and most of them can't break 110, much less 100.....these are my favorite people of all.....they are a great source of used clubs
  9. I don't care who you are, that's funny right there For the record, no alcohol had been consumed and no rollers were harmed in the incident...
  10. Stretch a little, followed by 20 swings with a weighted club/2 wedges.....10 of them baseball style, followed by 10 normal swings....on the first hole, take 3 real practice swings before each hit.....you should be back to form by the 2nd hole.....oh, also worth it to hit a few chips and putts before every round.... With that being said, my best rounds have always been those where I had plenty of practice....a nice small bucket of 30 to warm up, 15 minutes chipping, 15 minutes putting......anything less and I will be adjusting on the course the first few holes....
  11. My experience: Low grade balls I have played - $10-15 a dozen - rockflites - the balls will take a beating and play well off the driver, as well as the irons - unfortunately, they aren't the best at holding a green nor around the greens Mid grade - $20-30 a dozen - these seem to be a better ball, hold and perform around the greens fairly well, but their wear a little quick Top shelf - ProV1X for me please - best of all worlds, excellent off of every club, balls last an entire round, and can easily hold greens with any club/tons of spin/shot options
  12. Weekend Report OK, first a report from the weekend. We ended up with 5 brave souls who were able to sneak away on Easter – Truett, Doug, Andrew, Gummi, and myself. Since we were literally one of maybe five groups on the golf course, we played as a 5-some. Finishing the last 2 holes in the dark just to get in, it became more of a casual round as a few gimmies were passed around to get off the course before 9pm, LOL. While everybody hit some incredible shots, it’s still early in the year and scoring was between 90-115 for the group. Andrew won closest to the pin on a 190 yard par 3, perfectly stroking his hybrid to a very close 12 feet. Gummi won the longest drive hole in the dark with a nice 250 yard poke in the fairway, straight as an arrow. Truett hit an amazing flop shot to 10 feet on the 10th hole, coming from 15 feet below the green. Doug hit a 5 iron on the 190 yard 17th to within 20 feet, nice draw that checked up just past the hole. I somehow found a way to birdie two holes, my first two of the year. Stevens Park – April 18th Our next event is being held at Steven’s Park, the Sunday after next, at 2pm on April 18th. I just spoke with the staff this morning and they are looking forward to having us out. Additionally, they mentioned the remodeling that will start in December of this year – the course is being completely revamped and will be closed for an entire year. The course is getting in better shape every day, the greens are rolling true, and we should actually have some grass in the fairway for this event. Newbies For those that haven’t come out yet because you are worried that you haven’t played much, or maybe you don’t know every rule – don’t sweat the small stuff. I don’t know all the rules, but I keep a rule book in my bag and there are others in your group that are there to help. Everybody is not playing to their potential right now – it’s early in the season, and as you can tell from the first few events, there is no reason to be ashamed of a high score. Come out and enjoy the experience, meet the guys, and let’s get the season going. Remember, you get points for every event you play and we are working on trophies/gifts for end of the season. Additionally, the only cost is the twilight green fee and normal playing fees – the kitty is only $8 and it’s completely voluntary. Something you missed this weekend – Doug asked Truett if he was going drop his pants after coming short of the ladies tees on a topped drive. Apparently he hadn’t heard that one before, because the look on his face was priceless. (For the record, the PMGT does not support dropping your pants on the golf course). I hope to see all of you on the 18th. I’ll send out the email for sign-ups on Friday.
  13. This topic came up this weekend during our round.....POW.....it was a blast.....everybody had a big smile and we talked about the commercial for quite a while..... Actually found out my father had NEVER seen the infomercial.....we had him laughing in no time....you can't make this stuff up
  14. IMHO, this has been going on since I was a kid.....whether public or private courses, I saw it 30 years ago, and I see it now......I'm guessing it has always been around, at least to an extent.....at least 3+ times every season, I get hit into.....just like the author mentioned, it's on days where the golf course is backed everywhere, so it's not like you can let someone play through and fix the problem......I've also been paired, as a single, with groups that get frustrated at slow play (even though the course is backed up) and they are tempted to hit into the group.....I will always speak up, letting them know I refuse to hit into anyone, it's dangerous.....most of the time, the instigators understand etiquette - they just don't care.... Last year, weekend round at a local muni here.....we are in a 4some, behind 4somes all over the course, it's a Sunday round.....anyway, the 3some behind got impatient....on the 2nd hole, they hit just as we were exiting the green.....ball didn't get close to us, no big deal.....sitting in the fairway on the 3rd hole, they hit just as we started to walk - ball rolled up on us, I'm getting a bit concerned.....just as we finish putting out on the 3rd (we are still on the green), I see the guy hitting from about 160.....he must have caught it thin, the ball comes in low and hot, right about head height, luckily not hitting any of us......this is the last straw, I have my wedge and putter in hand, I start walking back to them with offers to settle this right now.......I am not a violent man, but when the safety of myself and friends are threatened, I got zero issue protecting myself...... Not proud of my blow-up - it's the first and only time that has happened, but I take multiple hits into my group as a threat......after my little tirade and "offer" to the offending group, they kept their distance the rest of the day.....not saying what I did was right, because it wasn't, but it's what happened.....I'm not violent at all, but even the nicest guy will protect himself if the situation merits... My two cents...
  15. You gotta remember the rule to these dream scenarios.....see, while they are basically dreamtastic, you have to throw in real world logic to make it seem possible...... Therefore, Steve would be unavailable since he'll be on Tiger's bag.......or do you plan to lure him away with a sixpack of cocktail waitresses that are going to keep him captive during the Masters so you can have Steve available? just sayin
  16. Shot an 89 yesterday, same course as last week 2 birdies, 5 pars, 5 bogeys, 3 doubles, 2 quads (estimated, left card at home, but the 2 birdies were the first of the year) 6636 yards/70.9 rating/117 slope Other than one hole, drove the ball solid most of the day Short game getting better, except two bladed chips that led to the quads Cloudy but warm, 2 club wind Best drive - 250 yards into the teeth of the wind Best iron - PW from 110 into the wind, made the birdie putt Best putt - 15 footer for birdie, putted fairly well all day
  17. Definitely the Masters... As far as the caddie, I'd want to bring one of my golfing buddies.......I don't have the skills to make the cut, so I'd want to bring along someone that would enjoy the experience.....also, someone I could laugh with, because I have no doubt I'd be seeing portions of the course most pros never visit

    Augusta Week

Like the OP, got to watch the highlights last night and I am pumped....just something amazing about that course and the tournament as a whole....it's going to be amazing......look forward to the Masters every year.....hope the weather is beautiful and the scoring is low....
  19. Wow, I thought it was much older.....from maybe the mid 90's......that guy is a trip.....POW....BOOM......he's got that fawesome feathered haircut......I love the one shaft fits everyone idea.....everytime I happen across it, I simply have to watch at least 15 minutes.......it's so 80's Miami Vice, I am drawn to it....kinda like a bad car wreck, LOL
  20. Personally, I don't think it has anything to do with the cup....I think players want to win, and if they don't feel the shot, they lay up..... Throughout history, there are many examples of players that hit a bad drive, laid up on a par 4 to a wedge distance, saved par, and won the tournament.....a few of them in majors.....I think Payne Stewart and David Toms are a couple of examples...... With that being said, I saw Bubba Watson lay up on a 220 yard shot earlier this year on a par 5 (l14th hole or something) and I almost lost my mind.....I think they said it was a 4 iron for him and he was laying up.....and personally, I think it cost him the tournament.....now, if he won, everybody would have said he played it smart, but the other guy came out on top......at some point, every PGA player today has laid up in a situation where we've previously seen them go for it and miss in the past......part of it is just learning from their mistakes - if they start thinking about the shot, and then remember the last time they squandered an opportunity in the same position, they are better off laying up because their mind isn't right and they are already beaten....
  21. These are pretty much my yardages, same as montru....my wedges are a really weak part of my game unfortunately...
  22. What Ping said.....also, playing by yourself sucks.....doesn't seem like it would be any fun.....I typically play busy munis, so I get a chance to make 2 or 3 new buds anytime I venture out alone....IMHO, do your best to get paired up.....
  23. So kewl, we have our own Texas thread, LOL I played with uttexas at Twin Wells......the wind was a beating.....with the wind, 8 iron from 175.....against the wind, 8 iron from 130.....it was crazy.....UT did drive a 330 yard par 4, it was sweeeeet.....and he birdied the hole, I think.... Had the same wind yesterday afternoon at the range.....was at Golden Bear, where the wind was right in your face.....also, the balls were moving on the green.....this wind is crazy......I'm used to 15mph stuff, but wow....
  24. The only time I will try the shot is with a sitting-up, pefect fairway or light rough lie where I need to go 260 plus, there is no concerns about carrying water or a trap, and the reward far outweighs the risk.... Otherwise, aggressive 3wd with a sweeping draw is a better play IMHO.....that, or a lay-up.... I love that shot of Arnie at his invitational that the TGC shows on 18 where he hits driver off the deck to 20 feet.....priceless.....
  25. Your lay-up is too short on that hole....you need to be laying up to 200+......work a little to get your distance up on the 3wd, or take a little off the driver.... Also, it really depends on the hole.....if it's fairly wide open after the water, just hit your 3wd and get as close as you can.....try to find that right perfect lay-up distance where you can roll up your 3wd second shot just to the front of the green....if the hole gets narrow or there is a bunch of trouble, just lay-up with a 7 iron and leave a perfect piching wedge into the green.....there is no point in wasting balls and piling up penalty strokes....
