  1. Golfshot has been dead nuts for me. I recently played at a course in Idaho which had tons of tall evergreens, and my IPhone 3gs matched my brother's $400 laser rangefinder. At the most there was 2 yards difference. not too bad for a FREE app!
  2. Yep, the chartered flight from the Open Championship to Vancouver certainly helps
  3. Thought I'd revive an old thread instead of starting a new one. I'm working on a "retro" set of clubs. All bought at local goodwill stores in the area with the exception of the putter. So far I have an old persimmon MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Muirfield Driver. $5 a bullseye putter bought at a play it again sports. $10 4-9 1989 Wilson Staff Fluid Feel blades. $18 As you can see someone has removed a bit of steel and with it the chrome finish on the back and sole of each club. I assume this was done to lighten the swing weight, but I'm not sure. Whoever did this did a nice job and both areas are very smooth and uniform from club to club Grooves are in exceptional shape for being 22 years old. The worst two are the 7 and 8 iron, but even these two are in good shape. I also picked up a Wilson 3W and 5W. $10 And to top it off a retro bag, that I wouldn't really be caught dead "gaming". $5 Total so far is $48. I'm still working on looking for a couple wedges that aren't totally destroyed.
  4. >58 degrees Fahrenheit = shorts for me.
  5. I really like my 4DX Evolver and Rockbottom has/had them on sale recently for 49.99. I bought mine last year for $57 from Rockbottom golf. 10.5° with a stiff UST Proforce V2 shaft.
  6. No comment on if you had the right to be annoyed, but just want to say I've met some pretty interesting/likeable people when being paired with "strangers."
  7. Stats: 88.......44/44 8/14 FW and 6 GIR. 35 putts including one 3 jack. 7 pars, 6 bogies, 2 doubles, and 2 triples. Just all-around awful!!
  8. I was on the first tee @ 7:00 this AM and off the course by 10. I really like early morning rounds.
  9. Yep, not obsessed with distance as much as my iron play and putting which both suck at the moment! I only did this so the next time I play I plan to hit 3W off the tee and see if distance is significantly less and/or if I hit more FW.
  10. Just as I figured, I kept track of my tee shots with driver and average a whopping 223 yards. I'm blaming it on the extremely wet FW's. LOL To top that off I only hit the FW 7 of 12 times. Long drive of the day was 259 and the short was 182 where I hit a tree and kicked it straight down. I hit 4 drives under 215 yards and 6 drives 230+.
  11. The lower my index goes the more I realize how bad I really am. I think the lower my index goes the higher my standards for "good golf" get.
  12. I hit driver on every hole at my home course except for the par 3's and one very tight par 4. It is pretty wide open and the rough is not very penalizing. Out of the last 3 rounds I have hit 4 drives (out of 39) in the 280's with one being at 287 yards and ending up within 50 yards of a green. These are certainly an exception, and hardly an average. I probably hit as many of those 39 tees shots 150 yards as well. 4 drives @ 280 yards and 4 drives @ 150 yards = 215 yard average My course is 6816 yards (the tips are 7621 yards) and requires some decent length to get short clubs in your hands for second shots. In order for me to have 150 yards (8i) or less into most holes I have to hit it 240-50 off the tee with roll which for me requires driver. I recently got a gps system but haven't been keeping track and only measuring the REALLY good ones. I will start averaging them all and come up with a more accurate number. I'm suspecting about 220-230 yards or so. I play at a muni and my drives are usually past most of the other hackers there, but certainly not long by any stretch. BTW, we all know that it doesn't do any good to be within 50 yards of a green if you can't hit it close with your short game. In my example above I ended up making frustrating par with a not so good shot with a wedge that ended up long that left me with a L-O-N-G putt @ birdie.
  13. Short game let me down big time today. Stats: 88.......43/45 6/14 FW and 5 GIR. 37 putts including four 3 jacks. 5 pars, 11 bogies, 1 doubles, and 1 triple. The damn 3 putting has to stop!!
  14. Choked up on my 56 degree sand wedge to the 110 yard par 3 #7. Hit pin high then took a hop and spun back just a touch to about 3 feet. Even I can make that putt!
  15. Played decently the last two rounds yesterday and today. Both rounds from the white tees @ my home course 6196 yards par 72 68.8/122 Yesterdays stats: 86.......43/43 5/14 FW and 9 GIR. 34 putts including one 3 jack. 11 pars, 1 bogies, 5 doubles, and 1 triple. Trouble was with driver off the tee with 5 stroke and distance penalties. Todays stats: 82.......39/43 6/14 FW and 6 GIR. 31 putts including one 3 jack. It seems I can't get through a round without 3 putting at least one hole. 1 birdie, 9 pars, 7 bogies, and (drum roll please....) a quadruple bogey. A little cleaner round off the tee with only two penalties off the tee. The one really horrible swing came on #15. I pushed an 8i from 155 way out to the right and was unable to find my ball in the undergrowth. I had to play my provisional. I was playing well up until that point and was sort of in shock I guess you could say. Anyway instead of taking a deep breath and concentrating on saving double I rushed a chip which went way by the hole. My putt for was a down hiller which power lipped out leaving me 6 feet back which I left short. I'm so close to the 70's I can taste it. Maybe tomorrow??
  16. Just recently came out of the dark ages and upgraded my old "smart" phone to an iphone 3gs. I bought the golfshot app after reading some reviews online and used it for the first time last evening. If you don't already have a gps device it is money well spent.

  18. I had the same issue. I was pushing and pulling with a HUGE slice mixed in every once in a while with the driver. I took a look on video and was shocked to a see a VERY flat swing plane. I did some range work with what "felt" like an exaggerated turn down of the left shoulder or side tilt and my normal draw came back quickly. Driver and long clubs have been mucho better the last three rounds. I was struggling to break 90, but now am comfortable mid/low 80's the last three rounds.

    ticks

The woods in September while bow hunting can be miserable with all manner of gnats, mosquitos and ticks etc. I only know of two things which work good for ticks. Deet (repellant ingredient in OFF etc) and permanone (kills on contact & to be used on clothing only!). If we were talking mosquitos I would point you towards the ThermaCell, but it does nothing for ticks. A quote of mine is above from a post from 2009 http://thesandtrap.com/forum/thread/24676/ticks
  20. Management or the people who run a golf course is most important after general upkeep I would say. I didn't renew my membership to the local course because Tue and Thurs are "senior league" days. In the morning they shotgun start either the front nine or back nine and then switch in the afternoon. When i play on those days I always ask which side they will start on then I will play the opposite 9. If you don't finish up your nine and they do the afternoon switch they will just jump all over the course no matter if other people are out there playing or not. One time I was walking from the 8th green to the 9th tee in plain site when I saw a couple carts coming from the clubhouse. I was bending down to tee up when they all stopped and teed off in front of me without so much as a wave. It took all I had to not walk up there and give 'em a piece of my mind. Complained to the club house and they apologized. Water under the bridge and no big deal. The second time it happened I had teed off early before the seniors teed off and had asked the starter which side the seniors would be playing. He said the back nine so I walked off the front and was on my way from the 2nd green to the 3rd tee and here come the seniors shotgun starting on the front nine. This time I asked nicely what was going on explaining that I had purposely asked where they would be starting so that I could purposely play the opposite 9. They said we are very sorry but the back nine was too wet and they had decided to play the front nine instead. After using some choice words with them I headed to the back nine stopping at the clubhouse to explained why I wouldn't be renewing my membership this year. Just really piss poor management.
  21. Holy thread revival batman!!
  22. I'll do you one better than having mismatched clubs in the bag. Do any of you have club head covers which don't even match the clubs they cover? For example my Titleist 906F2 3W has a Cleveland head cover. My nickent 5dx hybrid has a 3dx head cover. My old Scotty Cameron studio design #2 has a no logo black cover. I got over appearances and trying to keep up appearances over 20 years ago when I got out of high school. I don't hold it against anyone who has matching stuff though. I did get a chuckle out of the 5 Cleveland head covers I saw in one bag (Cleveland of course!) yesterday.
  23. IMO FW come first. Tough to hit a GIR from the trees or adjoining FW. After quickly learning I could not hit driver and keep it in play, I switched to hitting 5W or my 3h off the tee for my first 1.5 years of golf. I'm still a high index player IMO, but I broke 90 by playing a LOT of golf. I absolutely despise the range and usually only hit balls in winter and very early spring when the courses aren't open yet. I have never had a lesson, although conventional wisdom would be to get lessons and break 90 sooner rather than later. Different stroke as they say. Edit: Also, don't compound a miscue with another miscue by trying a hero shot. If need be just chip or punch out to the FW and go from there. In the beginning I would ALWAYS try the hero shot and it would rarely work usually leading to an even worse predicament. I'm not saying don't try a rescue shot, I'm saying keep it within your current skill level.
  24. For me and my index/game a bit of moisture is good. Keeps a ball in the fairway that may have rolled into the rough otherwise and the greens obviously hold better with a bit of moisture. The downside is green speed may be a bit inconsistent or slower than normal.
  25. 41/43 with three 3-jacks. There is nothing worse than a 3 putt bogey!!
