Not Sure What to Put in the Bag as a 14th Club
djake replied to StKildaSenators's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
@StKildaSenators ok I haven't been on the site for a bit and just got back on to see what's going on and stuff. Great site. Here is my 2 cents worth. 1) Get a video of your swing and post per their instructions, you will get some great insight into what's going on. Especially with the Driver. 2) Find an Instructional Pro, someone who teaches and has a Trackman or such, films every last swing you make. Goes over the video with you and works thru your game. You will be amazed if you stick to this how quick a Driver corrects with dedication to what your instructor is telling you to do. Also, I bet the instructor fixes your Fairway wood, personally I would gravitate to a 5 Wood as that is - for me - easier to handle and hit square so the distance is just as good as a 4 Wood for me. As you grow with your instructor you will figure out how your bag should be set up. Man, if you can hit a 60 why bag a 64? Just me but learning all the ins and outs of a 60 is darn tough, a 64 with a GHIN like yours and mine (16.0 at the moment) is just crazy stuff. But and what this site in the past has pushed doubt it's changed - get that Driver going, it's the fastest way to put yourself into position to drop your scores. Also - the yardage you mention per club. Is that carry or total yards? When it comes to this wonderfully crazy game Carry Yards are what you have to know. Total yards change day to day based upon course conditions and such. Carry is your game. My single most important tip - HAVE FUN - with this crazy game. Learn how to enjoy the sideways shots as well as the one's that keep you coming back. The golf swing is one hellava athletic move, no one ever masters it. -
Direct-to-Consumer Ball Brands
djake replied to steelied's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I agree with you., I have found that I can really juice a ProV 1, back that ball up to much. While the Snell hits hops and stays. Snell makes it easier for me to figure out what iron to hit into a green based on pin placement. For what it's worth, I found Vice to not be a very good ball in the wind. Our Pro Shop started selling them and I picked up some to try plus my wife likes them so she wanted feedback from me. When I first noticed it I thought it was me and just that type of day. Next round the wind was up and I was having some issues. lost that ball and grabbed a Snell and noticed a difference. So for me Snell is just a better ball in the wind then Vice so I stuck with Snell. Still, my wife plays Vice. In the end she really didn't care for my thoughts. She likes how the ball looks, that was the determining factor for her. -
This makes sense to me now. Playing with someone else at least for me does affect my game. I generally play better golf on a solo round then with someone. Since we joined a club my solo rounds are on course practice. I keep stats and a score but it's not accurate. So I do not post it. We do have to inform the Pro Shop of practice rounds. They watch tee times and score posting like a hawk. They will send a warning letter to the entire membership if to many people are not posting and will then follow-up to the competition committee. When I played publics I played a lot of solo rounds, it was the only way I could get enough rounds to have a handicap. After reading this post I will not post a solo again

How to Hit a Driver (Hit it Further and Stop Slicing!)
djake replied to mvmac's topic in Swing Thoughts
@mvmac or @iacas do you have drills to help get this down? I guessing you do, this site is filled with a lot of great stuff From deliberate to eventually full swing. Thanks -
Me to. I really enjoy The Open. Getting up early in the morning, having a nice cup of coffee. Lot's of fond memories of enjoying this with my Father. Also, my wife really gets into The Open. She cheers and groans, it's blast and such a wonderful time watching it with her.

I believe what you saying regarding fans in the stands and losing money. I would think with the TV revenue they bring in it would not matter if there were fans in the stands. I Missed the Memo About Dynamic Stretching
djake replied to nevets88's topic in Fitness and Exercise
Glad you started this thread. Following to see what gets posted. I need to learn a lot more about stretching as you stated. -
Day 5 Halted my Gold Flex work out. Need to listen to the body, getting joint pain. My right knee was flaring up. I did Day 22 of the Covid challenge. Really needed this drill to get things squared away with set up. Once I finished doing those drills I used my 8 iron and started with small short swings keeping Day 22 in mind. Worked up 1/4 then 1/2 then 3/4 and finally finished with 5 full swings. Also kept in mind getting wide on back swing. Very happy with center face contact. Yesterday I was either center or toe contact. Today, center thru all, well except the very first ball that I missed the net and lost the ball somewhere in my warehouse, uffda. Great day, set up fixed, center contact where it should be, ball was going down line excellent. Just really happy - great 40 minute practice session Great to read you bombed some Drives! Very happy for you. You have been working hard and it is paying off. Keep it up @JuanTheGolfer

30-day (Was Covid) Practice Plan Challenge - April 1-30 2020
djake replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I jumped down to Day 22 and did those drills. I felt off with my weight in stance, just didn't thinks were right. Got into the 3 drills, fixed my issues. I had to much of weight on my toes. I didn't have a pool noodle so I substituted PVC piping. That really worked my balance. Great drills! -
Reread your instruction. Easier for me to follow what to do. Planning on revisiting this one, thanks for the update

30-day (Was Covid) Practice Plan Challenge - April 1-30 2020
djake replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Bumping this thread, it is a great thread filled with drills. Hope it is ok that I bumped it. I did Day 1 yesterday. Today I started with Day 1 and did 10 reps then I proceeded to do Day 2 and did 3 sets of 10 reps for the first 2 drills. For the third drill I pulled out my tablet and recorded the third drill doing 5 reps. -
Your Backswing Length - Too Long? Probably.
djake replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
When I watch a Pro and slow mo their swing I keep reminding myself they are Professional Athletes I am not. They can do more with a swing then I can. So I do worry about what you said, am I getting to long because of watching them Crazy how the ball goes just as far with what one thinks is a 1/2 or 3/4 type swing compared to a full swing. I just need to trust it more. Thank you for your response @Dwall4017 -
Your Backswing Length - Too Long? Probably.
djake replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I voted to long. Honestly I have no idea if my back swing is to long, just right or to short. I had neck surgery and that did not allow a big back swing for a long time. I had one Fitter tell me that I had a compact swing but managed to get a lot of efficiency out of it. Then last summer one of the guys I was playing with told me my back swing was getting huge. I watch videos on this site, PGA players swings in slow motion, some videos on line and to be honest I have no idea on how big a back swing should be. This off season I have been doing drills to work on 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 back swings with the realization that what I think those are may very well be much longer. -
What on Earth Does That Mean? Golf Marketing

I will be Ohio next month for work, how early does the season start there? -
Day 3 - broke it into 2 morning session & evening session Morning - worked on take away - Covid Day 1 drill, straight soft trail arm, weight 60/60/100 for irons did 10 to 20 drills slow motion with 6i with no ball striking. Then I finished up with my 6i hitting 20 balls doing these drills at about 1/4 to 1/2 back swing. Focused on all of the above with final emphasis of getting my hips thru and 100% on my left leg after the swing is done. Evening Session - Warmed up with GF and 20 Multi swings, stretching Did the above drills to start then proceeded into full swing contact. Worked on my Driver, 5w, 2u, 3u, 5i and hit 40 balls. Finished up with GF added in left hand swinging today 20, left, 20 back and forth baseball and 20 right handed. All GF work was +5 from yesterday. Enjoyed the session

You are correct, monitors were not around 36 years ago but we stepped off yardage. No GPS then. 300 yard Par 4 50 yards to the green, hitting 250. Plus the clubs were Persimmon and the balls were the solid Top Flights. Now my Dad would tell you I was probably hitting it more like 240 to 245 😎 Rarely 260 though. As soon as my Mevo+ shows up I am going to grab my old 2 Wood and do a side by side comparision to my current Driver with a new Snell Ball. I think that will be fascinating to see the results. You need not apologize to me, I am the one who owes you an apology. I am sorry for going on a rant, I should not done that. It was a day where my emotions and frustrations had gotten the best of me. I am sorry, hope you can see it to forgive me. And sorry for the delay in responding. I have not been on the site much since then. If we can ever meet and play a round of golf together I owe you a beverage. -
Day 2 Another solid day of work, contact was more consistent center. My misses are toe but they are getting fewer. Did a warm up set with my Gold Flex (GF), stretching and then into some take away drills before hitting the ball. Focused on the where the club face was at A2 & A3 as well as my trail arm Worked on my Driver, 2 Utility, 6i, 8i & PW After that session was done I did my GF Core and Swing sets. All GF drills were +5 from yesterday

I stopped after last Thursday. Total frustration with golf and sat back to figure out what was going wrong. Developing a new plan, one that is not so ambitious but one that my body can handle. Day 1 Stretching - oh how I constantly need this. Gold Flex activity, did a warm up set before starting drills. Worked on Driver, 5i, 7i, 9i, 48* hit about 35 balls focusing on drills. Contact improved, alot! Consistent center face, still had toe shots but a lot fewer. I was getting my body to tired before starting to do my golf drills which lead to poor results. Finished up with lower levels of Gold Flex then previous weeks. I am happy

Where Is Your Focus Point at Set up?
djake replied to boogielicious's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
What you are doing for putting. Read the green, find that point to putt too. Then focus on speed. It really made a positive difference with my putting and helped me also with my issues with progressive lens. Less moving of my head kept my vision clear, if that makes sense. When I practice putting I now spend a lot of time focusing on speed control and watching how the ball rolls on the green for learning break better. This has made a difference in fewer 3 putts and watching a couple more 10' plus putts fall into the cup. Mainly dropping the number of 3 putts. -

THANK YOU!!!! No crap, really!! If you recall I asked about putting with trifocals and you as well as others gave me some great advice. But this, this one putting statement supported what actually made all the difference for me in putting. I started to do this, what you stated and it makes me feel good that I am actually doing something right with this crazy game. Been frustrating day/week of practice -
What on Earth Does That Mean? Golf Marketing
djake replied to ChetlovesMer's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Your wish is the easiest one in the world to grant. In fact I asked the Greatest Wish Granter I knew this very thing. I said "Dad I wish somebody would improve the playability of my irons" Dad's response "Go practice". Those were irons from the 1970's if you recall the only game forgiveness they carried was hitting it in the very center of the face. So as my Dad granted me my wish 50 years ago, I now will now grant you your wish "Go Practice" Today legitimate golf club manufactures can back up their marketing claims with science and hard data. Funny thing is, I can even back up their claims. At 58 years old I can carry a Driver 264, that is supported by Trackman as well as on a golf course with GPS marking. In 2019 my longest drive went 340 yards, that was only 1 drive and it was crazy. Flat hole I will add not down hill. Probably will never do it again and I wasn't even trying to crush it when I did. At the peak of my physical shape roughly 36 years ago, mind you I did play some college football I didn't hit one drive 300 yards and probably averaged at BEST 250 yards with roll out. The difference is 100% gear, clubs are more playable, more forgiving, longer by a lot because I am not stronger and faster in my swing today then at 22. Only issue, I scored significantly better with those old inferior technology clubs then today by a lot. And oh by the way, not trying to attack you. -
Where Is Your Focus Point at Set up?
djake replied to boogielicious's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
During my exquisitely wonderful (sarcasm) practice session today I was wondering about asking this very question. With my wedges thru 6 iron I look at the top of the ball, steeper angle of attack, hit ball first ground second. With my 5 iron, 2 & 3 Utility irons, 5 Wood and Driver I look at the back of the ball, this for sweeping. When all things work in perfect unison and coordination it seams to turn out pretty good. Today nothing turned out good so I read this topic and super excitted about what I can learn and crap. I read fuzzy, a foot before the ball, see target hit target, mind zen type stuff. OK all fine and good but now I have no idea, no idea at all how to look at a golf ball. Take this with a grain of salt, very frustrating day of practice followed by the most frustrating year of golf I have had, ever. At least in baseball it was easy, see ball hit ball. In football it was even easier, see ball destroy who has ball, get ball. In practice I think a lot, mechanics and such When I play I do not think at all, just focus -
Day 9 Morning, hit 10 ball with my Driver, it did not go well Evening - did Gold Flex work out with a step up in activity, did core. Added extra stretching worked on 60/60/100 with irons, I also put blue tape down to check for contact points. Hit 7,8,9 & 2 Utility 10 balls each. Did not go well Just a bad day of contact all around, feels like I know nothing about this game
