  1. Hogan would have flat out killed the ball with a modern driver.
  2. My SS hovers around 110, and I use an x-flex. Not really a big deal. Make sure the shaft has the right weight and kick point for your swing though... more to it than just flex. See a good fitter.
  3. I shot 41 over 9 holes the other day. The next 9 I shot 49. 9 holes means jack squat. Your carry distances are meaningless. Lots of great players hit it longer, lots hit it shorter. Not sure what the weightlifting stats were included for, but whatever. The score is the only thing that matters, and right now, you've put yourself in the elite group called "Players Who Can Break 90". Congratulations. That indicates that you can break 90, nothing more. There are 30 million golfers in the United States. About 2000 out of that number are good enough to make some sort of living playing golf. If you could break 70 on your home course at your age, you'd have a chance. Having said all that, it's the ones that want it most, and are willing to put in the work, that succeed. And starting from where you are, a career as a tour professional, even at the mini tour level, will take an unreal amount of work.
  4. Congrats - shots like that are why we play. I've only made one eagle in my life. Hit a 9 iron thin, but it went right at the flag, hit the stick and dropped in for a 2.
  5. Acheived! I shot 79 on a par 67 course on the last day of our handicap season. That cut me to 15.9 - my goal for the year and the lowest I've ever been. My putting has improved, and my iron game is much better. Still wild as hell off the tee, so that's my project for the coming year. Make driver less of a liability.
  6. Up here in the Northwest, if the lie is good, that typically calls for a routine pitch shot, flown about 10-15 feet short of the pin. I'll normally use my lob wedge for this. Not a flop, not a chip, but right in between. One bounce and grab. In firmer conditions I might chip a 9 iron and roll it up.
  7. I don't look down on anyone on the course. I've gotten my ass kicked enough times by guys swinging cheap clubs to know better. The people I have a tough time with are the rude, loud, inconsiderate, slow-playing folks. I couldn't care less what your clothes or clubs look like.
  8. 8 hours. Played in a storm at Bandon Dunes, and got pulled off the course due to lightning. Got back out to finish, but it was 8 hours all told.
  9. I love that hole. Hit driver to about 12 feet this past trip and got a little tentative with the eagle putt.
  10. Glad you got to play there! It's a fantastic course, one that everyone should play at least once in their life. I played my fourth round there last week. Shot 91 from the sand tees. It was a windy day, and I was pretty happy with the score. Had a couple bad holes, but also made back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13. It's a course that presents lots of options, encourages creativity, and demands clear thinking and good judgment. If you lose focus and hit a loose shot at the wrong time, you'll pay dearly. I love that place, and I'll continue to show up for ass kickings as often as I can. :)
  11. Of the ones I've played, Chambers Bay is the best by a wide margin. In the normal price range, Ancil Hoffman in Sacramento, CA is my favorite. I try to play it whenever we visit family down there.
  12. Phew, I was worried there for a minute. Mine is generally between 108-112 and if I get 260 carry, I'm thrilled. I don't get perfect launch conditions very often.
  13. Made an 11 on a par 5 in a club tournament. 1. 3 wood off the tee to the left rough 2. 9 iron punch out to fairway 3. 5 iron into hazard 4. Drop 5. 5 iron into fairway 6. Sand wedge to 40 yards short of the green (!) 7. Lob wedge to greenside bunker 8. Sand wedge to greenside bunker 9. Sand wedge to back fringe 10. Chip shot to a foot 11. In the hole Wow, that was brutal. Thanks for making me relive every gory detail. The worst part is the previous time I played that course, I made a 10 on the same hole. #6 was the worst shot of the bunch. Laid the sod over what should have been a pretty easy shot. I hit the green on the next hole and made par, which made me pretty happy.
  14. Weight slightly forward at address, hand slightly forward as well. On the backswing, hands follow an inward path with no weight moving back at all. It's a shorter backswing than is customary. Right leg straightens at the top. Arms straighten on the downswing, hips tuck under and towards the target at the finish. Done correctly, the head does not move laterally at any point in the swing.
  15. I putted sidesaddle for awhile, and it kept me from quitting the game. I had a caddie at Chambers Bay try to tell me it was illegal too. I didn't tip him very well.
  16. Anthony Kim said during his Playing Lessons show that a stock 6 iron for him is 190 yards.
  17. Tim Herron is still playing with Ping Eye2 irons. He has two sets, the gamers and a backup.
  18. To the OP - I wouldn't play for money with your friend. Not a chance.
  19. 2 under, chance to win? 6 iron, right at it. Should carry the bunker and run out towards the pin. My natural shot shape would work away from the trouble.
  20. Here's a slow of impact by a guy who hits down on it as much as anyone. Check out the close up of impact. Augusta Hacker can grandstand all he wants and it just gets funnier. The. Ball. Never. Moves. Down.
  21. I've had a few instances where I might have been perceived as a sandbagger and wasn't at all. I got invited to join a group on the second tee. I told them my handicap was 20, which it was at the time. They were playing quarter skins and asked me to join their game. I accepted, and proceeded to hit a wedge to 10 feet and make birdie. I got some pretty funny looks.
  22. I'm playing Chambers Bay on Friday. This will be my third time playing the course, and the first time in warm summer conditions. I've been practicing some different shots in preparation for the wind and firm turf. I've found it takes some real discipline to hit a chippy 7 iron from 120 out, but it's liberating once I commit to it. I'm just so unaccustomed to playing those kind of shots, as conditions up here in the North are typically far too soft.
  23. Depends on where the trouble is. I try to take something out of play. If there's a bunker guarding the front, I'll take the higher club to take it out of play and take my chances with a long putt coming back. Lately my issue has been not knowing how far a shot will go. My contact has been improving, and it's resulted in unexpected distances. Had 108 to the pin on Friday, hit what felt like a routine SW, and flew the ball 15 yards past the pin. I opted for SW over GW just so that wouldn't happen.
  24. On an easier course, i'm happy when my score starts with an 8. On a tougher course (>120) anything in double digits is great.
  25. Had a similar experience at Desert Canyon in Lake Chelan. Had 120 downhill to a green. Wind was back in my face. Hammered a 7 iron that stood up in the wind and I swear I saw it come back at me as it fell. Landed well short.
