What I do remember about the old guy was his name. It was Glen Dillon and for some unknown reason he carved his name in a crossbeam of a wooden shelter on one of the holes. This was at Gallaway golf course in Memphis.

Back in the mid 80's I was paired with a old dude who only had one club. It was adjustable. Had a wing nut and he would just change the angle of the head for whatever club he needed. That was the craziest thing I ever saw. He wound up shooting an 85, which was exactly his age.

I use a SkyCaddie 3. It definitely speeds up play for me. I have my range as soon as I walk up to my ball and am ready to hit.
-
I never keep score if I play a practice round.

Tye, At your age I think it's great you have goal. It is certainly not unobtainable. Work hard but have fun along the way. There are some smart people here that can give solid advice. Good luck.

Aggressive Round Score: 80 Conservative Round Score: 77 Average 7-Iron Distance: 163 Notes: Conservative round was more enjoyable. I mostly played to the 150 marker on every hole that I could except the par 5's and 3's. I either hit my 3 wood or 5 wood off the tees. I did notice on my approach shots I was much more accurate playing conservatively and actually hit the ball the same distance or even further. here is one kicker, I hit over 80% of my greens in regulation but 3 putted 4 times. My score should have been much lower. What did I learn, if you stay in the fairway you always have a shot to the green and never, ever 3 putt!

My .02. and believe me that is all its worth. Anybody that hollers something really stupid, like "mashed potatoes" should be tased for 3 seconds under the right shoulder blade. He will think twice about hollering again. I don't mind people being loud just not goofy loud. One taser, 3 seconds..............done........

Poll: Do you play on a public or private course?
Saig55 replied to Used2PlayALot's topic in Golf Talk
If I join a private course , is there a real advantage for my grandson? I'm not sure exactly what they offer but I would like for him to have some perks I did not growing up. Especially with accessability to a course and maybe instruction. He is only 2 at this time but trying to think ahead. I normally like to play many different courses but would basically play one if I thought he would benefit. What are your thoughts...? -
What is your "magic" distance or club for approach shots?
Saig55 replied to JaxBomber17's topic in Golf Talk
80 to 105 with my Vokey 56, 3/4 to full swing 205 with my 5 wood, dead on. -
I've been going to stores and hitting different irons for the past month. I knew I had a bonus coming from work and wanted to step it up a notch. It's funny how first I just plain liked them for the way they look. Then I hit them like it was an iron I've hit my whole life. Just was smooth all the way through. The set of irons.....Titleist CB712. No more excuses...time for me to step it up. Just had to tell someone....thanks for listening.
-
I'm looking for a 7 iron to complete my set. I just bought a set of DCI 962 Titliest irons at a flea market for $40. It doesn't have to be excellent condition but needs to be at least good. Just send me a PM or email. Thanks

Yes I have. Thanks for posting, I feel much better now!! How about when your cart (trolley) rolls off the tee box down the hill into the street and all your clubs spill out............

What's the freakiest thing that's ever happened to you on the course?
Saig55 replied to mgolfer167's topic in Golf Talk
I played a 9 hole course one day with a friend of mine. He laid up short of a creek(ditch) which had an arched stone bridge as the walkway. He skulled his shot, it hit the bridge and came back at him and hit him right between the legs. He screamed like a little girl and fell in slow motion to his side. When he got up he picked up his bag and threw them in the creek. He walked away and as far as I know has never played golf again. Now that right there was funny......... -
No, I atually hit these clubs well. I practice a lot. I hit my short irons every day, from about 135 and in. I live out in the country. All I have to do is hit over the soybeans. lol Maybe lessons are the next step. One lesson wouldn't be bad (cost wise), but most places I've checked with want you to take at least 3 and that will cost some change. I know, you only get out what you put in. Maybe a winter project. I'll ask Santa Claus.
-
Bottom line is I just want to play better. If keeping my clubs and doing somethinge else will help, I'll do it. Maybe a couple of lessons. Believe I've been back plying for 3 years and since I last played in the 80's there has been some real changes. One way for me to learn is to ask questions on here. You can teach an old dog new tricks.............lol CHEERS.....(does it mean the same from a redneck?)
-
So what are you saying? My clubs are as good as it gets or as good as I'll ever get. As far as levels go, there is everything from SGI to Blades. I don't know enough about them so I am asking on here to more knowledgeable people than I am. I don't have to justify buying new clubs, if I just want to buy some clubs I'll go by the most expensive tour blades. I am just trying to play better golf.
-
I'm not sure what would be considered better clubs than what I play. Are mine SGI or GI irons and what would be the next step up. Are R7's truely better than what I have? This is where I get confused. There are a lot of clubs on the market.
-
I have made it down to about an 11 handicap. 3 years back. I currently hit the Hogan BH-5's and want to go to the next step. I am looking for suggestions for a new/used iron set. I am not opposed to pre-owned. What would be a better set of irons for me. I have found some deals on Taylormade R7's. How much better are these than what I hit? I am not partial to any particular company. Just what I hit well. I can go to Golfsmith and hit a bunch of different irons. I am just trying to narrow the field. What say you?
-
Steve, I'll take them. But don't ship them to me. lol Will you take cash?
-
You definitely get to hit different shots and different clubs when playing from the tips. I've also played from the most forward tees. Again you're hitting a comletely different club than what you are use to. Playing from the back, I did not have to worry about the fairway bunkers. For me they were unreachable. lol I had a blast playing from the tips but probably won't do this again for a long while.
-
I'm about a 14.5 handicap and not a long ball hitter. Normally will play from the forward tees or the middle. Yesterday a friend and I decided to play from the tips. I have never done this before, ever. I can tell you the course looks different from way back there. The course I played was 6743 yds long, Slope 131 and rating is 73.1. I shot a 94, 46 on the front and 48 on the back. I actually played well but caught myself trying to drive the ball a little further on the back and stayed in trouble. There were a couple of doglegs that I could not reach the corner on. Overall, I am glad I did it, but probably won't do it again. I was mentally exhausted when I finished. Made me think way too much. It's a completely different ballgame.

Well, I'm pulling for Russell. I think it's good to know the backgrounds but I believe all that will fade away as the weeks progress. I think the meek kid whose momma worked seven jobs or whatever may be the sleeper.
