Differences between Nickent hybrids & ironwoods?
etlreams replied to paul.r's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I could be wrong....so please, someone, correct if I am. I have a 3DX ironwood. It is a hybrid. No question about it. The head size is the same as my Callaway FT hybrid. I think they just wanted to be creative with the title and not call it a hybrid. The corresponding model to the 3DX ironwood, was the 3DX Utility - which the head was a bit larger, perhaps just smaller than a typical fairway wood. I definately liked by 3DX Ironwood. I prefered the smaller head size. http://golf.about.com/od/equipmentre...ent_3dx_dc.htm -
Sorry to hear about your accident. Scary stuff. Whenever you get the strength, you should do whatever golf related things your body will allow. Even if you can't take full swings, doesn't mean you shouldn't practice putting and chipping, if your body will allow. Hope you have a speedy recovery!

WOW! Congrats! And at your club championship, no less. That's wonderful! I've never had one, nor have I witnessed one. I've been within a couple of inches once, and within a foot a few times, but never dropped one.

I need a 200 yard club, please recommend
etlreams replied to khale's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I third the Nickent 3DX. They are cheap and a fantastic club! I played the 3DX to fill the gap between my 5 wood and 5 iron. Was a great club! -
I suppose there's two schools of thought on how to handle this: One might say to go to the driving range and work it out The other might say to try and forget yesterday. Tomorrow's a new day Sounds to me like you are tense. When I get nervous, frustrated, "feel the pressure" , whatever.... I tend to tense up and pull my long game shots and flub my short game shots. I am stressed, therefore (without really physicaly feeling it or recognizing it in my swing) my body tightens up. Personally, I would go with option 2. Try and forget yesterday's round. Do whatever relaxes you, be paitent and play your game the next day.

Happens to all of us. I've been really up and down this year. Great rounds and horrible rounds. Not much in between. When I shoot a bad round, I like to play my next round at a confidence building course. There are two par 3s and an executive 9 I play quite often and shoot really well at. I am just comfortable at those courses. So...I like to a couple hours off work and play a quick 9 at one of those courses by myself. They are never crowded, so I can just take my time and walk through my game in my head. I usually shoot well. The courses help to remind me "yeah....I know how to play this game.." and my confidence level goes back up.

Should I match my 3 wood to my driver?
etlreams replied to alomar123's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Use whatever you hit best. I have three woods/metals and they are all different. I like them for different performance reasons. I like my R9 driver because it is long and fairly forgiving. I like my Big Bertha 3 wood because it is the most forgiving fairway metal I've ever hit. I like my X 5 wood because the sole design makes it great out of different lies (fairway, light rough, etc) So...no..for me having the same model/brand in my driver and fairway metals is not a prority -
You should gain more distance with a regular flex shaft. I switched from a stiff flex driver down to a regular flex and increase my average by about 15-20 yards! They were different drivers and different shafts, though... so it wasnt comparing apples to apples. I would get go to a Golfsmith or Golf Galaxy and try out some used drivers on a launch monitor. See what kind of numbers you're getting. Often times you can get a "last years model" driver for significantly less than a new model. Or...going used is another option. I bet, if you dont have to have the "latest and greatest" and don't mind getting a used one that's only a year or so old, you can find yourself a good 460CC driver that fits you well for $100-150.

When to Bump and run or lob shot?
etlreams replied to bkoguy07's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I use to flop everything with my lob wedge. As the summer goes along and the fairways harden, however, I sometime find that floping and sometimes even pitching when I'm on the fairway up to 20 yards out makes it tough to get under the ball. So I bump and run it. So....if the fairway is hard and I have a clear pathway to the green (no elevatio to green, thick rough or traps), I'll bump and run it with my 8 iron. -
I bought some Callaway shades this year. The only reason I got them was because I like they way the look. (i have a narrow face and most sunglass look too big on me). Anyways.....Callaway has what they call Neox lense technology. I have no idea if this is true or not....but they claim this technology reduces glare and gives a more natural view - and this lense technology does not interfer with depth perception, as most polarized lenses apparently do. Again...no idea if that is true or not...probably just a marketing gimick. But I will say that the Neox lense does give a very different view. While most sunglasses make your view appear darker, these sunglass do not. I can't explain it...but...it looks like I'm not wearing sunglass, yet I'm not squinting from the light. It's very weird, actually. http://www.callawaygolf.com/Global/e...ensDesign.html

I should! I'd impress the hell out of him. With my luck, though, nerves would make me bogey every hole!

This post is timely for me. I'm golfing with my boss tomorrow at his club. He is a 3 index. I've been able to avoid golfing with him for two summers now, but tomorrow's the big day. I wish I could not care what he may or may not think of my game, but I do. I'm all over the place with my scores. I don't even look at my handicap as a guide, really. I could go out and put up an 82 at a course I'm comfortable with and know, and then go out the next day to a course I don't know and put up a 105. So you just never know what you're going to get out of me. I'm worried about the latter happening tomorrow!

Lost my 60* at the course today : /
etlreams replied to tws1098's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I agree with this. If you like your 60* and hit it well, I'd replace it. I absolutely love my 60* wedge. I use it around the green all the time. I also have a 56* wedge, but it has 14* bounce to it - so that is great out of the deep rough and sand. But from the fairway, fringe, light rough, short bunker shots, hard sand bunkers - the 60* is my best friend. But then again....I've spend A LOT of time with it and have learned to put a consistant swing on the ball with it. If you really find you have a distance gap between your driver and your 16* hybrid, then you may want to think about a 3 wood. You may get a little more distance off a 3 wood due to a slightly longer shaft (maybe). But if you are comfortable with your distance gaps in your long game....add (replace) a weapon to your short game. It's where you score. -
I played a 3DX for a while last summer. Great club! Liked the feel, sound and look of it. Actually....one thing I really liked was the unique stock grip! My only criticisim would be that the paint seems to chip pretty easily.

I would go with the AP2s. I think you'll outgrow the AP1s. Another idea is to get a combo set. 7-PW AP2s and 4-6 AP1s - Or whatever combo you'd like. I've heard their is a difference in the loft degree (I think AP1s were lofted stronger?) between the sets, though. So if you went the combo route that would be something to look into.

I wanted a 14-way bag over the winter. The Titleist, Nike and SunMountain were all I could find at the time. After further looking, I found one by RJ Sports at tgw.com. It is half the price of the other three and came in the color scheme I liked - all black. Check it out. http://www.tgw.com/customer/category...ords/rj+sports I've been very happy with it so far.

Lately I've been playing the Nike One Vapor. I've been trying a lot of different balls lately, trying to find one that "fits" my game. I like the Vapor. It seems like a straight ball, feels good off of irons and driver, greenside spin isn't the best, they seem to be pretty long, and (most importantly for me lately) I love the feel of them off the putter. I don't know why I mark, since I rarely come across other Nike One Vapor balls...... but I mark mine with two black Sharpie dots and one red Sharpie dots above the swosh.

Still think the golf ball is important?
etlreams replied to James_Black's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
WOW! That's just all I think I can say on that. I'm also a 13, so I guess my contribution to the discussion should be taken as such... but here goes. I agree with the sentiment that the impact of the ball (and equipment in general) is pyschological. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out if I should play a high spin, low spin, low/high compression, distance, etc. ball for my game. They do have an impact. High spin gives me good greeside control, and gets me in to trouble off the driver, sure. But I don't think the spin of a ball is THAT great of a difference maker. I know I'm not good enough to consitantly realize the benefits, and take advantage of, spin on a ball. What I have been focusing on recently is the difference in balls and how they feel off the putter. I find a HUGE difference here. I've really been focusing on putting lately, so perhaps I'm more atune to it.... but lately I'm coming to the conclusion that being confident in the roll and feel of the ball on the green is more important factor in a golf ball. -
Favorite glove....and why?
etlreams replied to toddmlazarchick's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
This is trypically more of a grip issue. If you are getting blisters than you are probably gripping the club too tightly. Or...if you don't golf that often, you may just not have calluses built up in the common blister areas. -
Favorite glove....and why?
etlreams replied to toddmlazarchick's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I've been using FJ WeatherSof for the past couple of years. Their fairly cheap, fit my hand well, look "traditional," and have a good feel to them. My only complaint is they don't seem to last very long. I like my glove choice. I hymn and haw over ball selection, wedge selection, drivers, etc.... It's nice to have one piece of equipment I am all set with and never think to "try something new." -
what's the bounce angle difference? Perhaps that will help you decide. I recently took out my set PW and had a 48* Vokey bent to a 46*. I think the bounce angle is too low (6*) for my full swing approach shots. It's great around the green for chipping and for pitching.... but it doesnt seem to perform as well on full swing shots as my set PW.

i got my 60 vokey wedge at Pawn America for $10. It was probably a few months old. Grooves were in "like new" condition. It was in an old "$10 for all the old clubs in this bag" deal. I walked up with the Vokey and said.... "tell you what....I'll give you $10 for just this one club." Deal. Idiots! I feel like I robbed them, but they had it marked.

For me it's putting. I have always been up and down with my putting game. I've been working really hard this year on my putting and played 18 on Monday and had one of my best putting rounds ever - and on a really difficult course with severly sloped greens. I was just feeling every putt. That one round made me feel like all my putting practice paid off! A solid round of consistantly making putts.... and/or consistantly hitting fairways with my driver brings me great satisfaction, regardless of score.

I didn't even read all 9 pages of this discussion. I just like the OP and the heading to this post! Perhaps they are accurate, perhaps they are not, I don't know. But I think handicap #s are over rated. I do not have an official USGA handicap. I enter all my scores into OOBgolf.com and that's how I get my handicap. If I wanted to list what that says in my profile, I'd be a 5.6. It is that low because (as I was called out on yesterday) there's one particular course I play a majority of the rounds that I play and I shoot REALLY well there. No way is it a reflection of my "typical" game. If I take out those course scores, I'm a 13-15ish handicap. Go figure! Anyways.... I know a lot of guys who spend a lot of their time studying equipment, the golf swing, etc. that aren't good golfers. I also know a lot of great golfer who know little about equipment and giving instruction on the golf swing. I'm not going to give the former less of my attention when they talk those things simply because they are not a cetain level of handicap.
