That's awesome, I think we can all remind ourselves that it's a game, sometimes...and hanging out with family while out on the course is the best thing we can achieve while we're out there.

Hit a 207yd uphill green with 4hybrid on Friday, hitting a draw and flying a bunker on the right to put it within 10ft. I usually don't get to play longer par 3s so I was pretty happy here. 139yds approach to middle pin on our #1 handicap hole, over the green is dead so I'm between clubs. Decide to hammer a PW, put it six feet past the pin and stuck it, hitting another little draw. Neither shot is extraordinary, but I've been working on hitting a draw with my irons and it was nice to pull them off as planned.

Engineering Voodoo - Taylormade Superfast TP
chilly replied to delav's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Been hitting my SFTP with Fubuki 73S. Tried it at full length and there was just no way to control it, things are a little better now that I cut it to 45". It's definitely a nice driver, but I haven't found it to be any longer then my 9015d/Saga 70S so far. Hammered one today on our #7 hole and saw the same shot that I'd expect out of my old combo. -
Back to the original question, I honestly have no idea how/if they hit it that far. I can understand the delofting thing, but there's a limit to how far one can do it, and the difference between that angle and that of a good 5hcp that delofts. Also, if it was purely from delofting, there's no way they'd get any height on it to stop it on greens. I realize the guys that are getting that kind of distance out of irons are bigger/taller guys as well, with the matched equipment...not to mention they're the best golfers in the world. I saw that Kaymer hit a 2iron over 270 as well, that's crazy. All I know is that the longest I've seen anyone hit a level, no wind 6i is 200yds...and that was huge. I'll take the low road and ask, is there a possibility that these distances are not correct? I will also say, I went to a Duramed Futures tour event (womens developmental) and watching 5'3" 110lb girls bang it out there 240-250yds, will make a 13hcp like myself really hate his swing. There is something to these folks, in the PGA and LPGA being a bit more talented then your weekend golfer like most of us.

Great finish, would be unbelievable Par by DJ on 18 if he can pull it off after that tee shot

I guess I just made the inference when he referred to the driver his "best friend", to me that implies that he hits it with some distance and good accuracy and it's a "go to" club. If he doesn't hit the driver well, then I guess my post has no point.

I think the part that's difficult to underdstand is that someone that can CONSISTENTLY hit a driver 260, in the fairway, wouldn't be able to hit a 9i. That's where the question comes when a higher handicapper says they average long drives. Doesn't make sense that a person can hit a 45" long club, at 110mph correctly but cannot do the same with a ~ 37" club at ~83mph. I can buy the short game thing, because I see it all the time when guys will blade chips back and forth across greens, but I don't know that I've ever seen a guy hit driver better then a 9i.

If you look at the Golfworks shaft selector deal, the shafts that supposedly help a slice are all high torque. The shaft allows the clubface to release easier, helping to square the face. Opposite would be true for something designed to prevent the face from closing, low torque.

I'm going to the Futures tour event here in town tomorrow and several of the BB girls will be playing. It will be interesting to see their game in person.

70 foot drop is how many yards less?
chilly replied to zanga254's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Personally, I'd go one club at that distance because it's going to be a high lofted club. High loft means that the ball is closer to flying vertically, versus horizontally, so the change in elevation doesn't effect distance that much. Something like a 5i though, yes, I'd go two clubs. -
1996 Chevy C1500, 2wd, 296k and still going strong. My golf clubs are definitely worth more then my truck =)

Natural draw vs fade vs straight shot shape
chilly replied to ERdiesel's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
There's no right or wrong, Nicklaus hit a fade. The vast majority of "good" players I've played with, however, hit a draw. Those same players, many times, wish they could hit a fade because it generally lands softer. -
If you're hitting the ball well right now, I don't see where a change of equipment would be necessary. Now if you wanted to hit the ball lower, or be able to work it, fine. That said, if you just want a new set of sticks, I say go ahead...part of the fun of the game IMO.

I am a mess when it's hot out, I've tried every grip out there and eventually they all get slick. Best, for me, is the Golf Pride dual compound new decade, but it has it's limits. Probably not what you're looking for as far as a magic grip, but I find that carrying around a big towel and really rubbing down the grip before I swing is the only way. That, and throw on a fresh glove at the turn...take them off while I'm walking to the next shot as well.

Ditto, you probably need the spin.

Buy a Callaway FT-5 or Taylormade 2007 Burner for $60 used, and spend the rest on lessons...then you can have a quality club, and a way to learn how to use it.

What shaft should I get? And Driver?
chilly replied to onebigtwister's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Don't know how much spin you can reduce, that FT-5/Blueboard combo is pretty low spin to begin with. FT-Tour with a stiff Voodoo should do pretty well and would be pretty similar to what you have in appearance/feel. If you play a draw, something like an Adams 9015d or Ping i15 will work. Ping with stock Axiv Red will get spin down, or 9015d with a Harrison Saga is low spin for sure. You're spin really isn't too bad, I'd guess optimal is around 2600 so I'm not sure how much you'll pick up distance wise...but going to a Stiff would work for your swing speed. -
If you're considering used, you can get just about anything, including clubs that are currently on the racks. 07 Burner is good Tour Edge Exotics CB1/CB2 Callaway X Cobra s9-1 Ping G10 Mizuno MP are $125 used Most fairway clubs retail around $200 or less, so if you're willing to pay $150 you can get anything you want in the used market really.

Iron play. Everyone talks about the state of their game off the tee, or their short game, but you don't really hear that many people talk about how they're hitting mid irons. The way I see it, unless you've put yourself in really bad shape off the tee...great ballstriking with irons can eliminate the need for great driving or a great short game. Also, consider that par threes rely heavily on iron play.

S.N., can you explain how it is that you're hitting the 6i a good 30-40yds longer then the longer guys on Tour? A big 6i is 190yds by all accounts, I'd say a "standard" 6i for the majority of humans is 170ish. I think Mickelson and a few others, at full freakiness, can hit a 6i around 200yds. Please don't use the "deloft" argument, the pros are the best in the world at holding lag and delofting the club. So, you can see why many guys will want to call BS on your statements, plain and simple. I could maybe buy 205-210, but what you're claiming doesn't really seem feasible.

I had a Ping Rapture 3wd with that shaft factory installed. I really didn't get low flight from it, more a nice mid trajectory.
-
I just sold my MP52s after a few months trying them out. My misses just never got to the green, where my MX23s would still let me at least find the putting surface. Also lost a bit of distance with the MPs. Figure my swing just isn't up to the tougher to hit irons right now, and I'm happier for the change.

The epoxy depends on what the cure time is for the epoxy, there are those that are done in half an hour, there are others that are 24hrs. I've also found that heat has a lot to do with it, get it in 90* heat and it's drastically shorter. Grips, I'd say 2hrs and you're ready to go. I started putting grips on right over plain masking tape, no solvent...ready to go as soon as they're on the club.

I said "jacked up" PW, because it's a 9i loft. Didn't mean anything about how hard you were trying to hit it, it's a good distance even as a 9i. What I, and I think everyone else is saying, is that hitting the PW 147 with a nice draw does not really prove that you have anything going on in the swing that makes it exceptional, it just means you can swing it pretty fast. I'm NOT saying that your swing doesn't have good points as I've never seen it, just saying you can't really make the leap.
-
I believe I know what you're asking. You're saying that because you can hit a jacked up PW 147yds, with a little draw and some spin, that you have some potential as a golfer. Yes, it shows you have some swing speed, but that's about it. I'd say if a guy goes out there and can hit that PW 120yds to the pin 8/10 times, he shows as much if not more "potential". Distance alone, or trajectory, or shot shape...they don't tell the whole story. Otherwise, every long drive champion would be on the tour. I think guys are just jumping on the fact that you said you can hit the PW as well as Tiger, I understand you're just making the comparison, it's just a little over the top. Yes, if you can swing as fast as a pro, you can hit one like a pro...it's physics. The consistency and control are the real difference. I believe Tiger hit an 8iron over 180 last year, as well as that 6i he hit out of a bunker to 206yds at the Canadian in '00...so he could probably hit a 44* club around 160 or better if he really needed to. But that said, you can probably hit that thing as far as Zach Johnson ever could.
