Nickent Golf- 4DX Evolver Driver
drglew replied to Kiwi Hacker's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Yes, as one of the biggest Evolver cheerleaders on this forum, a 1/8" allen wrench fits perfectly. Dug up the original thread... http://thesandtrap.com/t/32726/nickent-golf-4dx-evolver-driver Although as you can see by my Avatar, i've at least temporarily shelved it. Not quite ready to part ways with all the shafts yet as i'm not exactly comfortable controlling my new Cleveland...although when I hit it straight it really goes! -
Ahh Jeffrey71, i think i figured out your problem perhaps... When I post a 9-hole score, nothing will show up on your recent scores until you have another 9 to make a full 18, even if it takes weeks or months to get the second nine. So perhaps you posted 9, saw nothing so reposted etc.... (still can't figure out the 132 though!)

I just installed one on my putter, and it definitely was harder to install than a standard, probably because the material is less flexible than rubber. My tape was solvent based, if that makes a difference. when I realized my "usual" method wasn't working I added a lot more solvent, which might have helped. Also, grabbing the grip by a towel when sliding it on as opposed to using bare hands really helped.

I post almost all of my scores through GHIN.com and have never had a problem, and the score instantly is added to my recent scores. I did set up an "eGolfer" account on GHIN--not sure if that makes a difference. Note when I post through the computer in the clubhouse, it does take a day before it registers (i've made the mistake of forgetting I posted in the clubhouse, and then posting online resulting in two identical scores for the same day; had to call the club to correct it). Not sure what's going on with your scores. Maybe browser/cookie settings or something?

Adams Speedline F11/F11 Ti fairway woods
drglew replied to PhillyMac's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Recently switched from a Nike Sumo fairway wood, to the Adams F11 Ti (3W). At least for me, WOW. The reviews of the thing having a hot face are not exaggerated. Stock Aldila shaft is just fine for me. Great off the tee (i hit it almost as long as my driver if the fairway isn't wet), and I have no problems hitting it from the fairway either. Based on the deals, i also picked up an Adams 5W, although I went with the Speedline LP instead of another F11, as i'm a low-ball hitter; i found the LP definitely launches higher than prior 5W's with the same loft i've had, and the face is still quite hot. Thinking of moving to an LP 3W also... So my two cents would not to be to waste your money on an RBZ, when you could get two Adams instead for the same price! -
prescription sunglasses
drglew replied to 5ironkid's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
anyone (besides Kenny Perry or Trevor immelman) actually tried Transitions lenses for golf? I wear glasses, but hated clipon or wear-over sunglasses with them. -
Yup. So if you can find an established brand name set for a similar price, it might avoid blows to one's ego (even though for a beginner it likely makes little difference). Rockbottomgolf.com to me as well is a great place for bargains. Besides the Cally's, I noticed they have both an Adams Tight Lies iron/hybrid set, as well as a 1/3/5 wood set for $149 and $119 respectively. So for $270 you could outfit yourself with a "better" brand set--and Adams makes some of the most forgiving sticks around (yes you'd still have to get a putter & bag but you could easily get both on a clearance site for less that $100).

What are some good Forged "Muscle Cavity" Type irons
drglew replied to mikelegacy's topic in Golf Talk
Hogan Apex FTX's are nice sticks if your swing is decent. I hadn't planned on selling mine (which are in hibernation in my basement), but if you're interested PM me as I have a lefty set in great shape. -
Golf clubs - which brand is this ?
drglew replied to b-a-r-t's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Agree with above posts. I hope you didn't pay much! I don't know European store brands (you're in the Netherlands, right?), but they look very similar to Affinity or Acuity golf clubs (i'm trying to place that letter "A" logo on the shaft) sold in starter sets in some U.S. sporting goods stores. The iron hosels stamped "stainless" is a giveaway -- i think both Affinity and Acuity beginner sets have these -- trying to emulate the "forged" on some top irons, but really saying nothing. Whether they're any good or not, well that depends on how you hit them. If you're a truly a 36 handicap and learning the game, a starter set is very reasonable--although maybe for $200, not $2000! -
Also, are you using the "right" equipment? Although properly fit equipment is by no means a cure-all, equipment that doesn't match your game can certainly hurt. I.e. more forgiving clubs & proper shaft flexes, can make a big difference. And if you're using old clubs (i.e. older than 5-10 years), newer clubs also may also make the results of bad swings a little better (unless it's your putting that's holding you back of course!) I recently (again) thought my game was in better shape and tried to move up to blades, and voila, worse scores for nearly 6 months. Went back to more forgiving irons, and again i'm scoring in the 80's...

i think i'm the only one who picked Kevin Na....hopefully he won't be assessed a penalty for slow play, or card a 16 on a hole... MP59's do come as lefty's i believe!

looking for left handed clubs
drglew replied to lllllsp1d3rllll's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
As a fellow lefty, I know how hard it can be to find clubs in a store, especially if one doesn't live near one of those "mega"golf shops, and for starter sets, general sporting goods stores rarely carry LH clubs. That being said, I am forced to make lots of blind purchases off the internet. Most have turned out well, others didn't suit me and I sold them or banished them to the basement. For a full set at that pricepoint, you'll either be looking at a "house brand" starter set, or else used (very used) clubs. Examples are Walter Hagen from Dick's/Golf Galaxy, or Zevo or Snake-yes from Golfsmith. If your friend is a true absolute beginner and doesn't care what label is on the clubs, I'd personally go for the full set as it will be easier to get the whole package including bag in one purchase just for convenience. Here's just one example I found: http://www.golfsmith.com/product/30057184/zevo-zevo-z4-17-piece-set Years ago I used to have some Zevo irons (when they were a small independent company before being bought by Golfsmith) and they were pretty nice. Now the knock on most starter sets is that the shafts tend to be pretty flexible, and quality-wise some of the clubs may not hold up as well over time compared to most of the big brands. But just for occasional use, or for learning the game from scratch, a starter set will probably be fine. -

...my old sticks. The X20 tours have less offset, and a standard hosel as opposed to the bore-through; the combination of those raises the overall center of gravity. I believe the head size is also a touch smaller and the sole narrower on the Tour. (also, the Tours had Project X shafts standard). Net result is less forgiveness and lower launch, but a bit more workability. However, the Tours in my experience were still quite forgiving--they're nowhere near being a blade, and if you believe in Maltby ratings, they still landed in the SGI category i believe.

My two cents: as you're in high school (and probably growing rapidly), I wouldn't worry that much about your shaft. The stock 49g Re*ax is probably one of the lightest you'll find, and likely will be on the more flexible side compared to a newer one (you didn't state if you had R or S flex). If you're swing problem is hitting it too low, and also slicing, odds are that most aftermarket shafts will make your problems worse & not better, as they'll likely be both heavier and stiffer than what you have now (unless you're playing a stiff or x flex--now changing out to a regular flex might indeed help your launch with your swing speed). I'd bet your money would be better spent on a couple of lessons...and i'm sure your instructor would gladly offer some tips on shaft/driver choice based on what they're seeing.

Apparently you haven't seen how deep into the woods I can hit a ball...a compass, or perhaps a bread crumb trail, are valuable commodities. I do have a divining rod though...it's called my 5 iron on the 11th hole of my home course--guaranteed to find water!
-
I know everyone everywhere says to use the Taylormade wrench or else you'll break the threads if overtightening the weights using a normal wrench....but has anyone actually done it? I ask because my weights in a used R7 get loose after a round or two & rattle around--but I always baby them when tightening the weights, as I don't have the official TM wrench that clicks. (and I know I could pick one up on ebay, but the wrench would cost what my 3-wood is worth!)

surprised no one has suggested reshafting yet, as reg flex could be better suited to your swing. I'd be curious whether you've lost any distance or height as well. my 2 cents: if your new misses with the new shafts are much more consistent (but right), then stick with the stiffs and work on your swing. If your misses are just as wild/erratic as before, AND now everything is right, i'd ditch the stiff shafts, esp if you're not getting the ball in ther air either.

Great sticks, I used to game the original TA-7's (now they're my backup set stored at my folks' house in Chicago when I play there). Plenty forgiving, yet not overly chunky-looking at least compared to most current game improvement irons, and certainly workable. I'd imagine they'd be a lot more forgiving than your T-zoids, although if you're used to that Mizuno forged feel you're probably not going to get that, although I'd say the feel on them is still pretty good where if you hit it off the toe you'll know it (but still get a decent result).

+1 for Fossil Trace. Very nice course, not too expensive. And playing golf in Denver, well when you get hold of a drive it really seems to fly!

Suggestion for golfers from overseas
drglew replied to Gemini's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Lots of threads here on Orlando courses if you search: http://thesandtrap.com/t/51658/orlando-area-golf If you're staying around Disney that long and want a laid back "tiebreaker", you're group might find a detour to Disney's Fantasia Fairways fun--it's behind the Swan & Dolphin hotels on Disney's Boardwalk. Yes, it's miniature golf, but the Fairways course is designed to "look" like real golf (as opposed to the Gardens course). And i'd recommend getting a beer and the meatloaf at the Big River Grill afterwards! -
If you don't mind dropping some $$, Trump National in Rancho Palos Verdes definitely has quality rentals and is a gorgeous course...and at least when I played on a similar itinerary, it wasn't bad at all getting back to the airport after my round (?going against traffic...i'm not from LA)
