Golfers make bad shots all the time, that swing on 8 could happen to anyone on tour, the difference is not every shot by every player is televised. Charley Hoffman just took a 7 on the first hole, should he hang it up?

Kind of a lose lose for him, he plays the big events with lots of competition and really strong fields and doesn't win, and if he played in these shootouts like the Fall schedule and events like the Zurich and doesn't blow away the weaker fields then people would still say he was done. He plays courses he has a lot of great memories from and a lot of wins so always possible for him to pick up a few a year for the next couple years IF he stays healthy.

How Often Do You Replace… Your Putter?
Billbill13 replied to iacas's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Does replacing it with the same model count? I switched over to the Nike Method 001 when it came out, and I don't foresee switching again but you never know. I could however see me getting a new version of the same one just because over time no matter how careful you are they get scratched, dinged, etc... -
Played out at Boulder City Golf Course, first time, course is only 6600 from the tips so score should have been lower but things happen...Sloppy 79 with a double on a par 3 and also bogeys on 2 par 5's, only one birdie but overall guess I can't complain, I got to play and was my 22nd round of the year. Greens were really slick had 3, three putts also. But like I said what can you do.

Time to clamp down on moronic heckler's and camera phones?
Billbill13 replied to golfaddict1's topic in Golf Talk
I remember that, the PGA stop that is at TPC, right? That was the first time I remember them actively taking phones like that. Now I see most courses and tournaments don't care about the phones. I guess as far as the people telling, what does it really matter, if they do it after the shot. Its annoying but it doesn't bother me. Some guys like Keegan Bradley actually encourage the Bobba Booeys (Howard Stern Show reference) when asked about it. -
Honestly during a normal round probably don't use a lot of my bag but occasionally they are needed. I mainly use my driver, 4 hybrid, 7i, 8i, PW, GW, SW and putter. If I am on point with my driver I usually have 160 yards or less into greens which is my 7i down to LW, occasionally may play a hybrid or 3W into a shorter par 5 if its reachable otherwise have gone PW PW before to leave good distances. If my driver is off then its usually a lot of hybrids into greens LOL... I learned a long time ago play smarter, its easier to score with shots you are comfortable with.

Do you go to the practice range before every round?
Billbill13 replied to Scotsclaff's topic in Golf Talk
Always unless its closed or not available. If I am playing a scheduled round I try to warm up for 30-45/60 minutes, starting with some wedges work through the bag then chip a few more and then putt and then finish with playing the first couple holes in my mind on the range. If I am going out for a fun or practice round I just hit a few to loosen up. -
How many different clubs do you use around the greens?
Billbill13 replied to tmac20's topic in Golf Talk
I would say three but could be more, but mainly PW if playing a bump and run from the fringe, 56 if playing a shot that requires a forced carry from a tight lie and 60 degree from the rough. -
I don't have a problem with them making holes longer or play differently if it sets the course up. I like to see long par 3's once in a while. The guys are so long any way that it doesn't matter. DJ hit a 253 yard 4i up hill at Augusta so pretty sure a 270-300yd par 3 is reachable. I personally like it when the pro's struggle to make birdies and have to work for pars. Makes things really interesting vs a shout when they are just firing at pins on every shot like the master's recently. it was a good tournament but the scores were like watching the John Deere Classic, I like when level par or -1 or 2 or +1 or 2 wins. Means the course was set up really good and good shots won.

Went to play Las Vegas Golf Club, one of the oldest if not the oldest course in town, was the course I basically learned to play on. Its an old school muni but has some challenging spots. Shot 76 with a 36 on the front and 40 on the back. One stupid double ruined my side and then going for broke on a par 5 thinking I could make it up with an eagle and walked off with par. But still a good round and my 19th round of the season already so can't complain.

Personal preference. And I have seen minor scuffs impact the performance of a ball. Not here to debate as its always an individuals choice as to what equipment to use or not to use. Some times financial situations dictate people having to play balls longer than others as well. My personal preference is not to use a blemished ball.

Yes... Bears Best Las Vegas, Paiute (any of the 3 18's, Wolf is the hardest), Las Vegas National (where PGA event use to be held, old school but a lot of history), Legacy (but expect a 5 hour round), Painted Desert (good course and value), Rhodes Ranch, Tuscany, TPC Summerlin (where the PGA event is held now), Badlands (target golf though)... always check golf now.com or other web services as you can find deals. Most courses charge 2-3 times for outside non-resident play so finding a deal is the best option.

Bears Best Las Vegas - green tees 6600 yards or so, tough wind though. Shot 80, with 2 doubles, 2 birdies and a lot of pars... Was my 18th round of the year and Handicap now trending to a 7.3

I won't play with a ball more than 36 holes and thats only if there is not a single scuff or mark on it. As you progress and get better you will learn that those things absolutely do impact the ball.
-
Best thing to do is go to a place with the simulator and pay the $20 for half hour to an hour. Take a bunch of different balls and a few clubs, driver, 7I and wedge and see which ball you get the least driver spin with and the best distance and spin with the irons. You would be surprised the difference plus its fun.

I think over the years and time, we have gotten too hung up on pace of play now. People tend to rush, try to push you along, make you feel bad if you take time to look at a putt from multiple angles. I'm perfectly happy with a 3.5 to 4 hour round for a foursome. Anything faster is good as long as I don't feel rushed, anything longer and well either a really bad day or a slow course. Also remember rushing and hitting a bad shot and having to hit another one takes longer than taking your time and focusing and making a good swing/shot. If its hot summer day here in Vegas and nobody is on the course, I can get around 18 holes in under 2 hours by myself but I'll usually end up playing a couple balls and making it more of a practice round then if I have the course to myself.

Does anybody know what golf course is used in the filming of the Xeralto commercial with Kevin Nealon, Arnold Palmer and others...

I honestly don't see any problems with players WD'ing if they are not hurt, mildly hurt or actually hurt. They are basically independent contractors who have the right to quit working when they want to. The repercussions should be between them and their sponsors and keeping their tour cards qualified for. If you bought a ticket to see a specific player play for a baseball team and when you got to the stadium you would be upset if they took the day off but you would still stay and watch. I understand people paying to go see their favorite players play golf but there is always a chance you won't see them. And yes, a player playing in a tournament and WD'ing did take away a spot from somebody else who could have played but thats the ups and downs of their profession.

I generally hit it farther on the course than at the simulator because most simulators are set to sea level and I play about sea level and the air is thinner so ball travels farther. But could vary on a case by case basis. The best thing is to find a field or place to hit balls where you can walk out to where they land and then hit balls with the same club(s) then you can really see the true distance and get a good feel for your "clusters" so to speak.

I did see a noticable improvement in distance with the pro-combo's...was around 145-150 with 8 iron before and with the pro-combo's dropped down to a 9 iron from that same distance...now with the VR splits hitting PW from 145...sometimes I think it is all mental and that when you get new clubs you are jacked up to hit 'em so they go farther for a while but the pro-combo's stayed pretty consistent and so far the VR's are too...

Titleist AP2 vs. Mizuno MP-52 vs. Nike VR
Billbill13 replied to d373rm1ned's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
VR splits have been a great club for me...I actually picked up about 10-15 yds per club with them over the pro-combo's I was playing...if you have a club around with a demo day play a round with all of them and see what you like...the simulator will only give you so much feedback...but again the VR's have been great for me...I have played about 6 rounds since getting them and seen an improvement in my ball striking, trajectory and distance...the VR's also have great workability... -
I use to play the pro-combo's prior to getting the VR split cavity and loved them they were a great club...the 8-PW give you a lot of feel...However I really love the VR splits...they give me a lot of feel and forgivness for an occassional mis-hit...if you get tired of the pro-combo's look for the VR splits they are an awesome club.

I'm consitently 280+ yards off the tee with my drive but the problem is it comes back around another 80+ yards to the right and either in the next fairway, two fairways over or best yet OB. I average 250+ off the tee with my 3-wood and the last three rounds of golf I have played I have used driver twice and that was because the first one went OB.
