Sweet! You learn something new everyday!!

I can think of a good reason, I don't feel like paying for it!

Just watched the movie "The Greatest Game Ever Played" the other night. Thought it was pretty good. My question is for those who know a lot of history of golf. Was there a time when a golfer was not allowed to mark his ball on the green? The part where he tried to chip his ball over Harry Vardon's and into the hole got me thinking about that. Were there even greens around the time of the 1913 US Open? Also loved how they used to tee the ball, with a pile of dirt! Sweet!!

Good one! Seriosly though, you can't go wrong practicing your short game.

It's always better to relax! The challenge is in how too do that. If you figure that out let me know! Ha!

Exactly! Escpecially considering that the Masters never changes venue and that he should contend in that until he's 50. He could easily pass Jack just winning the Masters. I think once he gets his family issues figured out, he will be fine. I think what's killing him mentally is the uncertanty on wether or not Elin is going to leave him or not. I'm sure he has to know that she eventually will. How could she not? Anyway, once he puts that behind him he will shine! He has too many years in his prime left.

Great Job!! Feels good doesn't it! I remember the first time I shot a 70, it was in a tournament and I was riding high thinking I could coast to the win. The next day I shot an 86! Ouch! Lost by 2.

Which discontinued balls do you miss the most? which do you use now?

The "Vardon Flyer"!! Just kidding! I used to love the Precept EV Extra Spin. -
I'm sorry, but that's funny!!!

I would have to agree! I feel like I'm a pretty good all around golfer and if I hit it 250, I'm extremely happy! And has we know distance doesn't matter. I golf with a guy that can rountinly outdrive me by 20-30 yards yet I routinly beat him by 10 strokes!! It's the second shot that matters.

I would say that he uses the 7 handicap. I'm pretty sure that a handicap committee can pretty much do as it pleases in a tournament. So they could make him use the 7 for that round. I'm not an expert though. Had something somewhat similar happen to me. I played in a tournament and started with a 8 handicap. That was my USGA handicap. My first round was a 70. The committee decided to make my handicap a 4 and applied it to my first round, but didn't tell me until I was about to tee off for the second round. Needless to say I was furious and ended up shooting a 86 and lost by 2. So you should definitely let him no sooner than later so he isn't surprised!

What makes you leave the course happy (or angry)?
martytilma replied to clearwaterms's topic in Golf Talk
I'm usually happy if I shoot my average. That means I'm being consistent. The only time I get angry with myself is if I shoot a bad round and I can contribute it to mental mistakes. Wrong club selection, wrong shot selection, not going through my routine, etc, etc, etc.... -
Sweet!! I'm heading to netflix right now to update my Que!!

Fade with a one plane swing.
martytilma replied to trumpetgolf's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I could be mistaken, but Jack N. said the way he worked the ball was to adjust his club face at address. I usually hit the ball fairly straight. 90% of time if I need to play a fade I can, and all I do is aim left, how far depends on much fade you need, open up your club face a bit and just take your normal swing. Like I said that is about as simple as it gets, and it works for me and I pretty sure it worked for Jack too -
How to practise to become a better putter ?
martytilma replied to Gerald's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I totally agree with this!! I played a round with a fella once that no matter where he was on the green, he would 1 or 2 putt. He would always pace off how far is putt was and would look at a little piece of paper that he would pull from his pocket. At the end of the round I asked him what that was. What he told me was a tip a club pro gave him one time to help with distance control. This was about 5 years ago and I have used this technique ever since and consider myself a good putter. I also don't practice putting near as much as I should!! Here is the technique: 1. Pace off your putt to get the distance in feet. 2. Compare that to this chart: For a 3 foot putt you take your putter back 3 inches. For every 3 more feet you add an inch. So for example a 6 foot putt would be 4 inches, a 9 foot putt would be 5 inches etc. Make a little chart all the way up to 60 ft. Now granted this only works for flat lies so obviosly you have to adjust for up and down hill putts, and slow or fast greens. It takes a little practice to get the feel for it, but once you do I'll bet you cut down on those 3 putts!! Anyone else ever try this technique for distance control?? -
What I meant is that with some tape between the ball and the club face I would assume that there is very slight loss in performace in the driver. I realize it helps you dial it in. I love using it myself during rounds. But I tend to play a lot of rounds by myself, so I'm not worried about others.

To me the thing about mats, is that you can never really "Chunk" it. I need to know if I'm hitting the ball crisp or not and I think Mats give you a false sense of that. I will hit off grass no matter how good the mats are any day! JMO

I have wondered the same thing myself. If anything I would think you would lose performance. But if I had to wager, I would say it probably is illegal. I would compare it to someone giving you advice during the round other than your caddie.

Nothing is worse than losing a ball that you hit just off the fairway!! Wouldn't it be nice sometimes to have spotters like the pro's do!!
-
What will strike the ball farther, forged or cast? I have always thought that the reason most pro's play forged is that they are more consistent than cast. Pro's want to know exactly how far their ball is going to go and cast iron distances can vary from swing to swing. A buddy of mine says that forged should fly farther than cast if struck cleanly. That doesn't explain this: I can't hit my forged 9 iron any farther than 145, yet I can hit his cast 9 iron almost 155 without much effort. Any thoughts?? Am I totally off base with my understanding of the differences between forged and cast irons??

That is exactly what I said!! But he played golf in high school and I didn't so he though he knew more. Ha! I believe you would, but I could be wrong.

In my golf league last night, my opponent hit his tee shot that went straight right and struck the ball washer which deflected it about 20 yards behind us. A golfer in our group said that he was allowed to play that shot over because his ball struck a man made object. I disagreed. Can anyone clarify when and if you get to replay a shot without taking a stroke?

That's funny!!

Hit my second shot on a par 5 into a fairway bunker. Had about 100 yards left and couldn't blast it out because of a tree overhaning the green. Choked down on a 5 iron and hit a low runner onto the green about 8 feet from the pin, made the putt for birdie! Was very happy with that!
