Favorite glove....and why?
drPheta replied to toddmlazarchick's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Tried out the Adidas Inertia glove this past weekend. The golf clubhouse had them for $11, and I needed a new one. It's comfy, snug, kept me dry, and looks new after 18 holes. I gotta say, I'm impressed for $11. I'm temped to try the Exert. -
Rutgers golf course looks very nice. I'm playing there tomorrow. Yipee!

Don't buy new clubs cause they're the latest "technology." Buy them because you A.) need to replace worn clubs, B.) have no clubs to hit with and can afford them, or C.) have money to burn. They won't make you better, but you'll force yourself to get better because you'll need to be more consistent to shoot low scores. That said, if you are motivated to practice and improve tougher irons will be nice to have. But, if you're looking to just buy something everyone else raves/dreams about having because they rave/dream about them, then you're in for a lot of frustration. As willing as I am to deal with bad shots, I'm lucky I'm motivated enough to hit the range and course as often as I can to keep improving my game. Yet, I've had several rounds where I just wanted to end the round early. But, I stuck with each round, practicing what I learned, learning more, and keeping a straight mind on the game. I know the clubs didn't make me a better golfer than the day I started. It's the practice day in and day out.

No 3's in your bag unless you're good?
drPheta replied to drPheta's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Figured as much. Thought I was crazy to have a 3 wood in my bag. -
I was told that only good golfers carry anything with a 3 in their bag. I.E. 3 wood, 3 iron? What's that about?

I have the HTC Incredible, rooted, and running Android OS 2.2 (FroYo). With the stock 1300mAH battery, I can make it through the round on a full charge... and I'll still have about 25% battery left. Even still, I have a 2150mAH extended battery that I use for golfing, and I know I'm getting through the entire round no problem. If you're worried about your battery dying, you could intermittently open up the app (just send it to the background by pressing the "home" button). The GPS is only active while the app is running in the foreground. Now, I can't speak for iPhone users, because they don't have true multitasking. These apps may or may not be able to be sent to the background. However, on my Android phone I can simply press the home key, and I know my GPS signal will be muted until I bring up the app again.

Do you guys have Android, iPhone, or BlackBerry smartphones? Lots of apps will get the job done w/o a subscription. For Android, I'm using SkyDroid. It's a user-based system that is free. Users define the golf course database by mapping couses online (from your/their computer) and then the map is downloaded to the phone. So, really the only limitations are you need a data/reception where you golf, and you have to map (or hope someone else mapped) the course already. I googled Android golf apps and found SkyDroid to be a great place to start. Haven't needed to switch to any of the other golf apps, yet.

I was given solid advice to start off with a 4-pw set and grow my collection as I learned what I can hit and where. Over the several months I started out, my PW was consistently landing me 100-120 yard shots. I could cut the swing down to get 50-70ish yards, and this really developed a lot of control for me. Getting out of bunkers wasn't so bad with the PW, and neither was a close chip onto the green. So, do I need a sand wedge? Absolutely not. However, this past weekend I played 36 holes, and I noticed that my PW (while fairly consistent) required a lot more control from around the green. After this weekend, I realized I still don't need a 54*-56* wedge, but I certainly would like to have it in my bag for that extra control. Needless to say, I picked up one for cheap.

Was that he same ref from the England v. Germany match? I kid, I kid.

LeBron has/had every right to go where he wanted to. Play with whoever he wished, so long as they accepted. That's the basis of free agency. Where LeBron really ruins things for basketball, his fans, and his legacy lies in the following: 1. He said, "I got a goal, and it's a huge goal, and that's to bring an NBA championship here to Cleveland, and I won't stop until I get it." http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/knicks...f8Xda3KlGTLz8O That's a bold statement to make, especially if you're not going to keep your word. 2. He was a refreshing image that the NBA needed in terms of class, respect, and heart. Every pro athlete has an ego. Without the strong self confidence they wouldn't be pros. What everyone hoped for was an athlete who they could relate to. I'd like to say most of us thought LeBron was a good guy (in some sense). So much for class and respect. I'll refrain from commenting on his love of the game, because that's subjective and the goal usually is to win titles. (Though Karl Malone stuck with the Jazz without ever winning a ring... still considered a legend). 3. Any reference to LeBron being the most transcendent basketball player ever goes out the window. He feels he can't win a championship on the Cavs, so he needs help. He needs Wade to be the leader for him, so that he has an easier chance at a ring. Fine, that's his prerogative, and good for him if it works out. However, the Cavs had the best record this season, were the favorites in the East to make it to the finals, and possibly the favorites to win it all this past year. Still, he couldn't do it. All those trades, demands, picks, nothing could help LeBron win a ring in Cleveland. That doesn't sound like the greatest ball player of all time. 4. LeBron's monkeys called Cleveland to notify them of his departure. With everything they've given him, LeBron should have had the decency to call them himself. Is he a great athlete? Of course! Is he justified in being in Miami? Certainly. But, to be called King you have to be the best, and leaving your post to be someone else's backup for an "easy" shot at the title doesn't make you the best. It's sad for me to say that I respect Kobe more than LeBron. BTW, go Celts!

To be fair, the Dutch were the whinier of the two teams today. Too many stupid fouls. Too much whining to the refs while the ball was still in play. Too little smart soccer being played. I wanted Netherlands to take this one, but Spain put on real pressure and didn't foul as much. Not a terribly impressive match today, but the better team did win the game.

Mapping Middleton Golf Course - SkyDroid
drPheta replied to drPheta's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Par 3 course with greens literally next to each other. No map needed, but I ended up mapping it anyway after playing there. -
Buying my first driver. ($150 limit)

Callawaygolfpreowned.com taylormadegolfpreowned.com rockbottomgolf.com 3balls.com Preowned "very good" condition clubs would be the most valuable if you don't mind not having new, or latest/greatest -
Could someone help me out? I'm playing Middleton Golf Course in MA tomorrow, and I need someone familiar with the course to map it out, or point out where each hole is so I can map it out. The app I'm using is SkyDroid and the link to map it is here. http://www.skydroid.net/coursemapper.html Thanks.

SkyDroid seems like a great app to have. It's cheap, so worth the $1.99 to try it out. You can map your own course (if it hasn't been mapped yet) on their website, and it stays in the database that way. I just wish someone mapped Middleton Golf Course in MA, cause I'm playing there tomorrow morning and don't know where each hole is in satellite view.

I got fitted for $15, including adjustments to my clubs Lie angle.

Got my X Woods last week, and the "Very Good" condition clubs are fantastic. I attached photos for you guys to see the condition they're in. Worth the $11 or so I saved when I bought them, compared to "Like New" 3W 5W 7W
-
$11 total. I thought about getting "Like New," but like I said I was being cheap. Haha. I really don't think the difference in condition between "Like New" and "Very Good" will be that significant. Either way, it's a good deal, now that I think about it.

I picked up a pair of Adidas Powerband 3.0 for $80 from Sports Authority when they had a sale. VERY comfortable to walk around all day, and I was extremely worried about having blisters from new shoes. FWIW, these are my first golf shoes ever. However, my Nike basketball shoes needed three full games to break in, my Pearl Izumi mtb shoes needed about 20 miles to break in, my Adidas carbon mtb shoes needed 10 miles to break in, and my Burton ION snowboard boots need about 1 full day on blues and black diamonds to break in. This is the first time I've had a sports specific shoe not need to break in to be comfortable. I think that's why the Adidas are so popular. They seem to be a fantastic shoe.
-
Will do. For $11 more you could get "like new" but I'm being cheap and would use the $11 for bucket at the range, a pack of balls, or a lunch, etc.
-
Thanks. I bit the bullet and bought them.

Callawaygolfpreowned has the X Woods (2008) on sale at 35% off. My set only has driver and 4-PW, so I thought about picking these up. I like their Hyper X driver very much, so far. I could get "Very Good" condition 3, 5, and 7 woods for $211 shipped. What do you guys think?

Too stiff shaft, more push/fade?
drPheta replied to drPheta's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Thanks all. I've done as much research online as I have done at pro shops and on the range. I get two conflicting words of advice from everyone from you guys to my friends to the pros I speak to and have fit me. Oddly enough one pro told me to stick with forgiving clubs because I will like the sport more and be able to participate in it. The other said to get the clubs that I hit well with, but not something I'd lean on like a crutch... I will learn the game and enjoy it because I learned it without developing bad habits. My friends say to stick with what's easy to hit (I'm assuming because that's what they did). At least everyone agrees and says to get shafts that fit my swing speed and ball flight. That said, I'm going with what I've been most comfortable with in my limited learning experience. MP-57s, and TM Burners have been hitting straight, and they're supposed to be for "higher handicaps" according to some. I'm not saying I'm any good, but they seem pretty forgiving to me compared to what I've been told. So, MP-57 here I come. -
Too stiff shaft, more push/fade?
drPheta replied to drPheta's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Didn't see that. sorry. I'm new to the game, so no handicap. However, I've hit a bunch of different clubs in the past week or so, and I really like how the MP-52 and 57 feel. I didn't try blades or absolute muscle backs, but compared to the cavities I was using the MP 57 felt stellar. My ball striking isn't 100%, I'm told by the pro that it's pretty solid. Considering I'm new to the game, I thought I could afford to force myself to learn correctly and quickly with a good set of clubs that I won't grow out of. I've been set on getting MP-57 irons after feeling them out, but now I have my doubts.
