  1. I heard someone yell MASHED POTATOES!! WTF does that even mean. No wonder the Euros hate American fans.
  2. Gotta love the 1 putts. Up and downs can turn a normal round into a great round. 2 birdies doesn't hurt either.
  3. A light rain is one of the best times to play. No one out there, grab the rain jacket and play. Just no Winn grips!! Lighting on the other hand is terrifying.
  4. I think what you are looking for is a 52 degree gap wedge. The distance from 5w to 4i is decent, but can easily be worked around. The scoring irons are where the shots are made. A 52 will give you one more solid opportunity for a easy par or birdie from about 110 yards. I've always hated the 3/4 pitching wedge!
  5. I've always found it hard to hit a straight chip shot with backspin and usually put some sidespin on each chip. Usually left to right for a shot I need to keep higher, then right to left for a runner. I was wondering what others do and if there is indeed a correct way to play a chip shot with straight spin. Play the same shot always?
  6. I've always wondered in golf and baseball who decided which side a righty should play. If you think about it setting up "lefty" you stand on the right side of the ball, your right hand is your power hand, and a strong pull will go right. To me it has always sounded backwards for a righty to set up the the left side of the golf ball. My grandfather was an accomplished golfer who played twice in the masters and always said it was better to play from the opposite side as your strong hand. I've thought about completely decontructing my swing, reinventing it without the biases I have developed, and switching sides but I doubt I'll ever do it.
  7. Golf and then ski. The two seasons overlap perfectly here in upstate NY. Still golfing but getting the mountain itch.
  8. It's becoming more and more of a big "if" he will win again. I think he is more likely to destroy the S&T; swing if he keeps driving the ball like he is and failing. The man could single-handedly destroy the popularity of the technique. Someone please tell him to shift his weight back and keep his chin up.

    Eagles?

I've hit 2 eagles. First was a hole out on the first hole from about 100 yards (followed by an OB drive on #2). Second was on the 14th hole which is a 530 narrow par 5 with water in front of the green. It was basically pitch black out and was going to the be the last hole of the day, or night I suppose. I crushed a driver that disappeared off the club face. I figured it went down the left side of the fairway and figured if i couldn't find it it was game over. I found it right where I thought it would be and why not, decided to go for it. I had to aim it out way right because of a tree protecting the left side and hook it. I nailed a hybrid, which I never saw, and felt I hooked it properly around the tree near the green. It wasn't on so i figured game over again. I found it right next to the green and proceeded to chip in from about 30 feet for the final hole. To this day it is maybe my favorite hole I've ever played.
  10. Definately not natural. Some of them have a slice hanging by a thread to the point where I can't just squish it back into place and have to leave it hanging.
  11. We were talking about having the pro offer the suction cups for free right next to the tees and ballmarks. I can't be sure it's only the old guys, but the damage always seems the worst after they all okay Thursday mornings, and I've never seen anyone I've played with do it. I will be playing and noticing every hole damage all over the cup. I've never used the wedge and I have a 2 ball so it would be impossible, but I have yanked the flag out and had the ball shoot out with it. I don't think either one of these are as bad as ripping it out with an ancient ping.
  12. I've been noticing more and more damage done to the cups as the week goes on. At first I chalked it up to idiots missing the cup putting the flag back in but some fellow golfers attribute it to the old guys using their putter heads to lift balls out of the cup. I now think this is the more likely answer to the mystery and was wondering if anyone else has noticed this phenomenon.
  13. John Daly: "Why are there 18 holes on a golf course? Because there are 18 shots in a bottle of Jack Daniels."
  14. After a topped or duffed shot on a par 3: "That's gotta get some legs!" Duff: "Take that home and plant some tomatoes on it." or "You could use that for putting practice." Short putt: "Does your husband play golf too?" (disclaimer: only works with men) Sliced shot onto opposite fairway: "Right in the short stuff!" Topped/duffed shot on par 4: "It takes three to get there anyways."
  15. First hole on my home course is an uphill 330 par 4 and I usually have about 80 yards which is a full LW or a mostly full SW. It seems every time I walk off the hole there are 3 small cut marks on the ball. I would love to switch it out but for $4 a ball I play 18 with it until it looks like it went through a mower. I've found the pro-v1x is about the only ball that holds itself together for 18 holes. I think whoever said it about the vokeys is right.
  16. I worked at a beer distributor and we had a company outing every year around September. It was basically a drunken festival with maybe 6 golfers and 25 guys who pick up their clubs once a year for this. In consecutive years we had a truck driver put a cart in the water, and drive directly across the 18th green. Needless to say we were not asked to return but man was it always fun. Everyone would crowd around the 18th as groups came in and heckle the approach shots and putts. I never blacked out but I saw some guys who after 5 hours in the sun who were not coherent anymore. Good times!
  17. I always liked Phil's 4 inch jump into the air after his first win at Augusta.
  18. He shot alright. It was a stableford format so I really don't know, maybe like 35 points or something. I forget the guy who won but he dominated. I think Romo and Elway did alright.
  19. 16th hole short par 4 with a severe back to front slope with the pin tucked in the front. Hit a 3 wood to 90 yards and spun a 60 degree from basically the back to the front leaving me with 3 feet from under the pin. Easy birdie.
  20. 82 in the club championship qualifier today. The pins were set up in the hardest spots I've ever seen and the greens were absolutely lightning quick. 3 putted twice from 15 feet. I was 13 over through 12 holes and basically gave up trying. Went 1 under for the final 6 holes so save a sort of respectable round. Maybe I can throw a 73 tomorrow and qualify for the championship flight.
  21. It was the Tahoe tournament last week I think. I saw Barkley swing the club with one hand. I feel turrible for the guy. He was talking about switching over to playing left handed. Good luck to him.
  22. One thing I learned a long time ago. Always leave your wedge on the green! And if you chip in, I know it's exciting but grab your putter. Good thing about leaving a putter is you can't get too far without it. If a partner leaves his club near the green, grab it and throw it in your bag but say nothing, waiting for hilarity to ensue 4 holes from then.
  23. If I'm playing with strangers it's always a polite removal of the cap and shades and a nice handshake. If I'm playing with friends it's always an exaggerated, hearty handshake and an over the top congratulations for a "terrific round sir!" I think it's sarcasm for my dad being so adamant about it.
  24. Top 5 courses ever played: Bethpage Black - Long rough, long course, amazing experience. Birdied 5 from the fairway bunker on left, only highlight. 4 is maybe the greatest hole I've played. Lahinch IRE - Only true links course I've played and man is it truly a links course. 50 F with 30 mph wind but survived. Kaluhyat, NY - Quite possibly harder than Bethpage with the whole course basically in the middle of a swamp. Missed shot = lost ball. Shotmaker's course. Sagamore, NY - Long for a 70. Elevated greens and beautiful layout. Greens were ugly though. Poipu Bay, HI - Beautiful course along ocean. Windy. Warning sign saying "you will reach the group in front of you in the fairway!" 330 yd drive.
  25. 18th hole 450 dogleg left into the wind. Flared a slicing drive up into the wind and ended up with about 230 in. Nailed a high 3 wood that landed on the green rolled 15 feet to leave me a 20 footer pin high. Missed it obviously!
