I love my son...but once they turn into teenagers then all bets are off. Anyway, to the OP, congrats on your new bundle of joy.

My goodness, you didn't just put the cart in front of the horse, you threw it so far out there no one can see it!! I'm assuming Soup is an adult with a brain. If you're not his accountant then I'd think it would be a really good idea to keep your financial advise to yourself. Let me be clear....he asked what he could do to cut costs in order to keep playing. Why is that so hard for you to understand? Soup I wish you luck. We've all been there and done that.

Rick...at this point, I just want him in college. With regards to the Pro thing...there's many more kids out there that are way more talented then him. Not to bag on my kid, but I don't see him playing professionally straight out of college....maybe as he matures to ahhh, 26, but as of right now, ummm no. LOL

Oh dear God...this is going to hurt. How much do you spend / month on fees? I'm going to say $1000. though that does include practice rounds for tourneys.This is for a month not a year. How much do you spend / year on equipment? Oh dear God shoot me. I would say, and I'm guessing here as the year isn't finished, ummm $5000. Now I'm including balls, tees, gloves, cleats, clubs, grips, shafts, shoes, clothing, etc. How much do you spend / month on food/beer at the course? I pack lunches for the tourneys, when my son is playing a tourney on his own he'll usually pay for it himself. So yearly...I'd say $1000. Oh and with regards to the beer, it depends on how bad he's playing that his parents start drinking. LOL How much do you spend / year on miscellaneous? Coach fees, tournament member fees, tournaments, travel, lodging, food... after just adding up this month I'm going to say....$20000. a year. 39k in one year. ~thud~ Though after looking at this list I will say we only have ONE MORE year of junior golf, then he's off to college, so we can still be broke. ~muttering~ why couldn't he have picked up a cheap sport?~ Edited to add...he does work so he does help out.

Now as a Mom with a son...that wasn't very nice, was it? If you don't like him then don't play with him.

With regards to the summer golf camps...yes we have quite a few of them. Though my son hasn't participated in any in this state, I have heard from other parents that it was a good experience for their kid/kids who are just starting out in the game. With the junior tours, we have a ton of them. My son plays with two large ones in our state, Alabama, and two other tours based out of Florida. Most of the tournaments my kid is playing are two to four day, but we do have one smaller tour that my kid likes that is just a one day tourneys. From a Moms perspective I'd have to say that all of the junior tourneys we've done for the past 3 years have been well ran, wonderful people, and they are always looking out for the kids. Though we decided to quit playing with one tour not because of the staff that were running it, we decide the parents with this tour were nuts. Parking lot fights at a nice CC's between two Fathers because of slow play pretty much was the last straw for us. ~shudder~ One Father threatening another while screaming I'm going to my truck to get my gun was it. Hubby, kid and I were out of there. Over all we've had a great time and my kid has learned a ton about tournament golf.

Number one...my kid who happens to be 18 and plays to a 1.4 index is far from being embarrassed for the clothing he wears on the course. He and many other junior golfer friends love wearing their Ralph Lauren, Adidas, Nike and what have you. And guess what.....the parents bought the clothing at outlet stores! I showed my kid that shirt that someone posted and I asked him would you wear it on a course...no way was his response. And that's a question I have. With a sleeveless shirt don't you have sweat dripping down your body/arms in the heat? How comfortable could that be? Now after this biddie fest, I'll say that the golfers that are dressing for the "part" are respecting the game that they love and choose to play. The guys out there that want to be comfortable in jeans and sleeveless shirts, all the more power to you guys, I think. But don't be surprised when other golfers look at you a bit oddly.

How much money do you have? Hawaii...lovely, I lived there for 5 years...deep pockets are a necessity, and I'm not talking about the greens fees. Southern California...I was born and raised in Huntington Beach CA. Again deep pockets are a necessity, and you better like people, tons of people. Arizona...love it. We plan on retiring there and the best part is...you're still close to CA, and if you'd like...you can always hop on a flight to Hawaii. Florida, very humid during the summer, I love the state, and greens fees are very reasonable for the smaller courses. Good luck!

Yep...I'm with Fourputt on this one. There have been many times my kid has moved up to the forward tees to practice with his irons and he has a 1.6 handicap. I see no reason to move back until you are confident in "your" game. Good luck!

My son plays 6, sometimes 7 times a week. Though I will say, he doesn't always go out on the course. He may practice for 5 hours, then head out, or sometimes he'll just practice and not go out. I'd say on average he spends at least 4 days a week playing at least 18.

Dent...my dear, you need to think about playing the course..not the people. Who cares how they dress. I'm assuming you're there to play the course, not them. They may bother you, but...you seem like a great kid..just go out there and play your game.

I'm kind of surprised about the talk of losing junior golf programs. My son when he started playing went to one that was wonderful. They even had to take a test, and pass it, before being allowed onto the course. It would be a shame to lose these junior programs. I think they're great. Heck they're fairly inexpensive, we have one going on this week at our club, and it's packed. I'd be sad to see the junior programs fade away. I wonder... is it due to the fact that we have so many junior tours around? My son plays on 3 different junior tours that cover 6 states, and he has a swing coach. Maybe more parents are getting private lessons for their kids instead of joining a camp like atmosphere?

Yeah baby!!! I love it when my kid and hubby go on golf trips. I'm always sent to the spa. muttering....I wonder if that's a hint?

Well I'm a golf mom...so if I may.....Rules...rules...rules. I've watched many junior tourneys. The one thing that always stops the group is a rule question. Now they can't ask the parents, and usually there isn't an official nearby, so hopefully there is at least one kid that knows the rule/rules. When to take a drop, how many stroke penalty, when to hit a provisional, lost ball, drop area, I'm sure you get the idea. Cute story. We were at a big jr tourney last year, the officials request that the parents stay a shot ahead, anyway, this kid hits the ball it hits the cart path behind my cart and the ball shot up into the battery compartment. When the kids got up there they had to make a decision on the ruling. I'll tell you this much, it made the kids think.

My sons swing coach always said to him before any big tourneys...."Basics." I wish you luck!

Well for my son as a 14 year old, his index was about a 6, maybe a 7. Now as an 18 year old it shifts between a 1 and 3, depending on how well he does when he has his tournaments. Tournaments always add strokes. Not too many now, but back a couple of years ago it was scary.

Hey...my kid feels your pain. It took 2 years before his home course accepted him, and he was close to a scratch player, like he was a 4. Now he is a scratch player and the adults love to play with him. I will say this...I had to have a talk with my son a month or so ago. He didn't want to be paired off with the new kids that were ranging in ages of 12 to 13. He thought he was above "that." I informed he was that kid 3 years ago, now shut up and see if maybe you can be a good role model for those kids. He now plays with those kids once a week, heck even with his other friends, all low index players, are playing with these kids. They all now enjoy playing with them. And the things they've taught them, like cleaning your clubs...and other mundane things have made my son and his friends glad they are there to guide them.

Well just going off what my son tells me, we regrip his irons about every 6 to 8 months. The other clubs in his bag, he just lets me know when they start getting too worn. Now he plays 6 days a week, so that is a lot of golf. We also have them regriped with Lamkin grips. They seem to hold up really well and he likes the feel of them.
