So the shaft in my 8 iron (Taylor made r7 tp) snapped last week and i'm being told by all the local pro shops that the rifle 5.5s are no longer available. What would be the closest match in terms of weight and flex? I'm thinking project x 5.0 or s300s? Thanks in advance.

I got my irons reshafted last year with rifle 5.5 shafts, and that was in June. I would advise contacting a private club fitter and builder. My guy really only uses the rifle shafts. If it helps his name is Brian Gott and his website is Gott Golf.

This chart will show you the relative flex/weight of TT, PX, and KBS shafts.

Also, this shaft guide from Titleist has a nice comparison chart on launch angle for various popular iron shafts.

You'd be looking at a KBS Tour S or TTDG S300/400 depending on whether you want a low flight or low-mid.  Also, that set of Rifle shafts is frequency matched, so replacing with the same model shaft isn't exactly going to give you a match.

Thanks for the responses all very useful, I should probably have said that I'm in the UK. I've been in touch with the UK distributors for Precision Rifle today and they've both confirmed that the Rifles have been discontinued :-( Which leaves me with a bit of a dilema.

I was fitted for these clubs and seem to recall that the Rifles were recommended because they were light and offered a high launch angle which suited my slower swing speed. Required specs for the R7 TP would be .355 tapered.

I'm therefore reluctant to go for the S300's as the high weight and low launch goes against what I need. I'm therefore thinking the Dynamic Gold SL S300's, KBS Tour R+ or Project X 5.0. All seem to have similar weights and flex (the S300s would be slightly stiffer I believe).

Any thoughts on the above? Any other factors I should be considering?

Well, I'd pretty much decided on the KBS Tour R+ (FCM 5.6) as the closest match, however the shop have just rung me to say they've 'found' a non-flighted rifle 5.5, which has to be the best compromise.

Getting the club back tomorrow and will be interested to see the results.

No more club throwing for me!

The Golfworks catalog features a full flex range of PX Rifle (non-flighted) steel shafts. But, it looks like your shop has bailed you out.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • @TxGolfDude I’m curious as to how long this ‘repeatable swing’ has lasted. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but we all know how cruel the Golf Gods can be. I too have had quite a golf swing journey. Unfortunately, when it comes to the golf swing I have zero natural talent. Nothing about it feels comfortable or natural. The grip? I’ve done them all and it still feels like I’m holding a knotted oak branch. The proper take away feels awkward and weak. Arms in a proper position, asinine and no feel of any power. I’ve had times where I think I’ve developed an acceptable swing with handsome ball striking for months only to fall apart. So, how long have you had this swing working for ya?
    • How come the marked shots on the picture add up to 366 yards and the label says 325? Are you playing it at 325? In any case, that hole is narrow with a capital NARROW. If those woods are lost ball territory, then I think you hit from the tee whatever club is accurate enough that you'll be able to hit the fairway "most" of the time. That could even be a wedge potentially, especially depending on how restrictive the trees back near the tee are. I might seriously consider playing this hole as 8 iron 6 iron or so. There's more room up by the green than the fairway, so save the longer club for the second shot.
    • Day 555, May 10, 2024 Practice outside at WW, hitting shots here and there. Good day.
    • I took a big step back last season in terms of scoring. I felt I'd plateaued and committed to another round of lessons and working on meaningful swing changes. Went from a 7.9 to an 11. Back down in the 10s. Just starting to see some of the feel of improvement show up in scores. In fact a few rounds ago I had my best round, both score wise and ball striking and putting, in a while! Shot 79 with a mental breakdown finishing bogey-bogey-bogey on a tough three hole stretch where I go scared of the water blowing up my 70s round and yanked three drivers in a row after pumping it long down the middle all day and then hit two of three approaches scared-yanked away from  water as well. Feeling like I can put some 70s rounds together this season!
    • Considering I only played a single round of 9 holes last year and only a handful of rounds of 9 holes in the 6 years before that. Now playing 18 hole on average ever 2 weeks this season. Definitely improved. Not by a drastic amount, but definitely improving. Hitting more pars and bogeys. Driving straighter etc. Practice helps! :D
