I'm thinking about getting a GPS and I'm having a hard time deciding. I'm leaning towards the Garmin GolfLogix because I've had other Garmin GPS products in the past and have been very satisfied. Although, I do like that the SkyCaddie allows you to position the location of the pin on the green instead of only choosing between front, middle, and back. I don't want to spend more than $300 unless I'm getting a lot more for my money.
Everyone that responded to my Push/Pull Cart Suggestions thread really helped me decide. It really helps to get honest opinions from people that use the products, instead of comparing specs from the manufacturers.

I voted "get a rangefinder instead." I think range finders are easier ("point and shoot"). I think they're more versatile (you can point it at lips on bunkers, trees at the corners of doglegs, another player in the fairway to see if you can hit yet, etc.). They get you the yardage to the FLAG consistently. And they don't require subscriptions - they're "always ready."

The only advantage GPS offers, I feel, over range finders are that they don't require line-of-sight. But I can count on one hand the number of times I had to walk more than five steps sideways to get the flag in my sights.

I use the CaddieII... my friend has a SG 2.5, and I have played with someone using the Garmin. I don't like the Garmin... I think it is overpriced and I don't like the way course storage, etc. works. The Sky Golf units have the best interface, but they come with a price, and the way they do the subscriptions is kind of a pain. I have found that the CaddieII is just as accurate as the SG2.5, but you only get FCB, not intelligreen. FCB is plenty for me, I can get a good yardage from this info. I also like the way igolf's subscription works... I have already downloaded every course in my area and where I am moving... so I may not even need a subscription next year. I also like the ability to add custom points whereas on SG2.5 you cannot. Intelligreen is cool, but if I had it to do again I would go with igolf... but I would probably get the Neo... it runs about $149. Only difference in Neo and CaddieII is caddie holds 8 custom points, and Neo only 4. But honestly I have only seen 1 or 2 holes where I would even dream of having more than 4.

I got a Golf Guru, $210 new on ebay.

Currently, no subscription fee, all 6,000+ courses are available. Good solid unit, very readable on the course, easy to use (after a round of tinkering), easy to read, fits into pocket without interferring with swing. Like the green-sense feature and continuous update of all data while walking.

You can map your own course and even the perimeter of the green (green-sense), not just the front-center-back that most have. And lots of other points for the each hole.

Golf Guru tracks shot distance.

You can even track your own statistics/score/etc.

The only detraction is the downloaded courses cannot be edited.

On GPS in general, I really love the distance to the green/pin measure. It makes it possible to pick the right club and swing profile. And is really great when your line of sight is obscured. You still have to hit the ball, but knowing the correct distance makes the shot that much better.

The handheld are better than the cart mounted units as it is always with you, not parked 60 yards away on the other side of the green.

And actually measuring your shots gives you some thought on trying a 220 fairway approach when you know none of your clubs have gone that far all day/week/season.

The previous comments on SkyCaddie vs GolfLogix continues to muddy the water on my decision to purchase either product. However, along this similiar line of concerns, I use a fairly new Mac computer and am interested in the success rate users have had in downloading courses, software, etc from either SkyCaddie on GolfLogix when using a Mac computer. GolfLogix seems to at least profess to be compatable, any feedback would be appreciated

I got an iGolf on e-bay (new) for under $200. It holds a lot of courses. Once you download a course you own it (no on-going fees). You can map custom points. You can map a course they don't have and back it up to your PC. If you map a course and send it to them they give you free credits toward more courses. My rechargable AA batteries last more than two rounds. No complaints.

I agree with that, I can't think of that many times when I couldn't see anything to get a reading off of and if you are that obscured by say trees or something I don't know that an exact reading is really going to make the difference. I also hate the fact that you have to pay a subscription fee for all these GPS systems, rely on a good satellite signal and on top of everything you can't get an exact reading on the flag! I know we're not all pros but isn't the whole purpose of GPS or Rangefinders to get the most accurate information? Otherwise I'd just as soon stick to course markers and make my own calculations.

I dont think it gets much easier than looking at a screen honestly. I havent had any problems with my skycaddie so I cant comment on other devices. It gives me good distances to hazards and bunkers. If its off by a yard or two thats OK I'm not that dialed in with my distances that if they say its 200 to carry or 202 to carry that it will deter me from hitting a particular shot. Even on overcast days and rain I have not had signal problems, I have heard of others having and can see how it would be an issue.

Im not going to trash a rangefinder I think both are great and both have Pros and Cons and you cant go wrong either way. Personally me knowing the front middle and back distance and knowing pin positing front, mid or back is more important than knowing the exact distance to the flag.

I probably dont mind as much though because everyone in my league has a rangefinder so I get the distance to the flag, then i get the distance to front, mid and back, which is then even better imo because now I know how much room behind or in front of the flag there is etc.

I know you will debate it but I dont see a GPS as giving inaccurate information. Again personally 125 instead of 126 doesnt hurt me and im sure it doesnt hurt most of us.

I have the Sky Caddie with no complaints. But it was really the only one out when I bought. Would be interesting to see what others offer IF I was in the market.

Seems like we've been over this quite a few times now, but I'll chime in again...

I have the very affordable iGolf Neo which I love. No subscription is required - but that would mean you would have to map your own courses. Which is easy, but perhaps time consuming.

So I paid $138 for the unit and $34.99 for a year's subscription which will let me download 100 gps course files.

Unlike SkyCaddie, those files are mine to keep regardless of whether I resubscribe.

The unit works fantastically. I couldn't be happier.

My only complaint is that I have to remember to shut it down manually after a round or it will run out the battery.

My SkyCaddie 2.5 works great with my MacBook, no problems with the software or download. No complaints so far, after 11 rounds at 3 different courses.

I just ordered my SG2.5, and I'm glad to hear you've had no trouble with your MacBook. That was one slight concern, so it's good to hear that their software works well with the Mac. Can't wait to get out on the course with it this week...

I voted "get a rangefinder instead". There is not doubt that they are more accurate. Instead of knowing the distance to the center and guessing the pin, you can just point and shoot. For laying up, you can just point and shoot; you do not need to figure out which number is correct on the gps.

Just wanted to provide a second confirmation that the SkyCaddie Desktop for Mac software works great. I installed it on my Mac Pro (you can ignore the "restart required" message in my experience), and it worked just like I would expect.

The SG2.5 itself was enjoyable to use. It was certainly a distraction to me on the course my first time out, but that was OK, too. I'm sure I'll get used to having it in time.

  • 2 weeks later...
I bought the GPS-8 Golflogix and have played a few rounds with it and it seems accurate and easy to use so far. Just walk or drive along and the screen changes automatically. I'm fine with front/center/back of green numbers plus a few fairway hazards.

I've also recently purchased the Garmin Golflogix. Just used it Saturday for the first time. Basically accurate to within a yard or two. If the next hole's tee box was very close to the prior green, it would sometimes want to stay on the previous hole, even if you scrolled to the next hole. But as soon as we were off the tee it was fine again. For me, its just a toy. My game isn't good enough to worry about it, but I do get caught with "in between shots" where I end up one club long/short. So its nice. I'm curious if my downloaded courses (I paid 29.95 for unlimited/year) will remain mine after the year is up? I didn't check into this but I'm curious now because some of you guys are getting much better deals.

I voted other; iGolf Neo.

A one time flat fee of $150 for 100 courses with editable/custom points.

It is the best deal in range finding/gps systems. I have shot my lowest score using it.

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
