I believe they accomplish this by stripping off the chrome, heating the head with a torch until it is red hot, and then

quenching it in oil.

By that description, it makes me lose some confidence of the integrity of the original club design.

Why is that?

There is a company in Denver called "The Iron Factory." They can do this or if you choose, restore your clubs to their original condition, paint colors, included. The process is $40 per club, including a new shaft. Roughly $280-$320 for a "brand new" set.

Why would anyone want that done? They just look rusty.

Some people love the old rusty and classic look. I'd get those black ones, those are sooo nice.

The reason I said that in my first post is the simple fact that metallurgy is a science. I don't think the clubmaker had it in mind that someone would "superheat" his clubhead just to give a specific color to it. Just my opinion....

what a pain in the butt to up keep..having oil can Scotties before you have to use decent preventative maintenance so it doesn't rust..imagine doing that 8 times after each round..yikes..no thanks.

I came across that same add tonight but for the black/gold 690 cb's and damn they look good. But I couldnt be bothered with that kind of upkeep after every round. Ill just stick with stock chrome. My next purchase maybe oil can vokies but i wont have a whole set of wore irons in 1+/- years

I actually love caring for my oil can vokeys, just gives me something to do. Asides from cleaning the club and resharpening grooves which I essentially do after every round every few weeks I'll soak them in vinegar to remove all finishes on the club and will gun blue the wedges as well as change up color fill in schemes.

Ive seen some of the black oxide irons from Japan but they're asking for 1500 for 5-PW, a little steep

They might look great now, as they always do, but they look awful after some clatter
