I drove down to Golfsmith in Atlanta, GA today and hopped on the swing machine at the store there.

I originally went down there to get a PING G-10, so the guy had me hit that. His name was Tim, excellent guy, he knew exactly what he was talking about. I felt fine hitting it before he had the machine ready for me, so I took a few swings with it.

Looked like it was going straight, no dice. I was upwards of 3300rpm backspin and 1200 sidespin. He told me we needed to be around 2200-2400 backspin and 200-300 sidespin for a straight ball.

My swing speed was at 109mph. So he went and grabbed a driver for me, same thing....he decided it was the shaft. So he swapped it with the Matrix OZIK X-Con 6 shaft, and waaaa laaa! 2300 backspin and 210 sidespin.

Downside he said it was a $300 dollar shaft alone.

So I ended up getting the FT-i Tour LCG Neutral Driver 9.5° with the Matrix OZIK X-Con Stiff Shaft, they had to order it, but it's on it's way. =]

With the Callaway FT-5 head I was carrying 270 yards, he said I should get a little more with this one, I didn't get to hit it, but I think I trust him.

Plus I got some FootJoy DryJoys, and another Vokey Wedge.

Great day. =]

I would had I not just spent it all there. haha

I will definitely let you know how it works on the course. It was nice to see someone amazed at how I could swing after only playing for less than two months. =]

Thanks for the reply!

The FTI Low CG with the code 6 is a beast. Best value for a driver on the marketplace IMO. Wish I wasn't moving/starting a new job/paying for school/vacation with the g/f. Also the Pro M's are really hot too.

Yeah, I mean I played a couple rounds when I was 10 or 11 but I don't think that counts? I shot a 75 for the first time at a par 68 course here last week. The first thing the guy at Golfsmith told me was to get lessons before I start learning bad habits, he was impressed.

Not to rain upon your parade, but I find it funny that your swing stats changed so much once the $300 shaft was used. Did you try any reasonably priced non-stock shafts as well?

Yes I actually did, we went through a couple of stiff shafts because I told him I didn't want to spend that much on a shaft, remember I was planning on going in there for the G10.

Everything seemed the same, thats when he swapped out the shaft with the Callaway FT-5 head, and it worked....

Amazing to me, I never imagined all the mechanics that go into a swing and ball flight.

No rain on my parade, I'm excited about my new driver, now only if it would get here quicker.

Very nice. I had no idea they offered that finish. If I had the cash, I'd be looking into a combo set of Pro-C and Pro-M irons in gunmetal.

Mizuno F-50 15° 3w (Exsar FS2 stiff)

I dont have the cash (well, sort of but definately not for new sticks)... thats what the old CC is for.

I was going to wait on these clubs till the winter here but the gunmetal is in limited supply so I just had to bite the bullet

I wanted to send my 735cm's down to Nomad Golf to have them dechromed and blacked out but after some lengthy discussions with the guy down there they qouted me at around 500-550

My 5-pw in the macgregors cost me 650 with a nice shaft, grip upgrade, lie adjustment

just though the extra money was worth it, I've been thinking about blades for some time so I'm pretty excited for the jump

    • You need to stick with one instructor as long as they’re not terrible. There’s no blueprint to improving a golf swing and different instructors may see different things as being more important and try to fix them. The end result is you get a hodge podge of things to work in that may not be cohesive or necessarily help you. If you stick to one instructor and communicate to them as such, they’ll also be able to work out a roadmap to your improvement which is more beneficial in the long run. If a guy assumes you’re just coming in for one lesson you might end up with a band aid.

    • Many thanks.  I read a lot of those posts.   Man, that is really deep.  As an old beginner, during a lesson or on the driving range, I have hit a good shot, you know pretty straight and it goes say 130 yards (7 iron).  The very next swing, I dig a ditch behind the ball.  I know I didn't do the same things on both swings.  Even this last lesson I had, I would hit a pretty good shot, not so on the next shot.  The instructor would quickly point out, "Hey you stayed on your back foot" or "Guess what happened there.  You got all armsy or handsy".  Sort of feels like I need a checklist when I prepare to swing each time.  I can see it now before every swing, "Hey can you guys give me 10 minutes while I run through my checklist".  In all seriousness, I see what you all are saying.  I wouldn't be overthinking it so much if just I could make decent contact most of the time.  Next lesson is about two weeks away.  Can't wait.

    • I was going to link in the same think @snapfade did.  Your swing is already consistent, repeatable, except for nearly "microscopic" differences.  The more mechanically-sound your swing becomes, the smaller and less frequent those "microscopic" deviations become.
