Mike Weir started 2005 pretty well. He placed 2nd at Pebble Beach in February and T5 at the Masters. Since then he's honed his ability to miss the cut. He's been cut 8 out of 13 events since his appearance at the Masters.

I don't have any ideas as to why he's having such a tough time. Thoughts?

Instead of getting better, because he's left-handed, he got worse. They're all backwards, those lefties.

No, obviously that's a (unfunny) joke. Mike Weir sucks because he can't putt this year. His driving has gone to hell, and his wedge game isn't as good as it used to be. That'll pretty much kill anyone...

Well I'm going to start by overlooking that totally unfunny leftie joke, and move on to Mike, I think the easiest way to see what happened to my fellow left-handed Canadian is too look at the pga tour stats, In driving distance he lost a yard, and he was .4 less fairways, so driving wasnt a huge deal, He was hitting 3.1 less gir which seems like quite a bit, but i dont think it answers the question. The big difference is in his putting stats, where he ranked 21st in putting average in 04' with 1.749 and 173rd this year with 1.806, and he was 61st in putts per round with 28.92 this year, compared with 52nd with 28.75 (I blame this on hitting less greens and still have more putts). I think the numbers speak for themselves, another example look at Chris Riley's putting stats from 03' to 05', he went from a world beater to saving his 06' tour card with a special ryder cup member exemption. And about that leftie comment, Tiger Woods hit his first shots in a mirror imagine of Earl, so he was left-handed, can you imagine the world today if he hadn't stopped mid swing that one fatal day and started hitting from the other side.

I can imagine it because it wouldn't be that different. He'd just be the best golfer hitting from the other side of the ball.

It's tough to argue with that answer right there.

Those are obviously the things he didn't do well this year and half of last year, but the reason for these faults have to do with his mental confidence as far as I'm concerned. I think the wind was taken out of his sails when he lost to Vijay in the playoff at the Canadian Open last season. He had so much pressure built up and really felt he let his fellow Canadians down. I hope he gets his confidence back because I am definitely a fan. He showed some potential at the Presidents Cup, and I hope he can carry that into next year. I'll be cheering for him, that's for sure.

    • Day 555, May 10, 2024 Practice outside at WW, hitting shots here and there. Good day.
    • I took a big step back last season in terms of scoring. I felt I'd plateaued and committed to another round of lessons and working on meaningful swing changes. Went from a 7.9 to an 11. Back down in the 10s. Just starting to see some of the feel of improvement show up in scores. In fact a few rounds ago I had my best round, both score wise and ball striking and putting, in a while! Shot 79 with a mental breakdown finishing bogey-bogey-bogey on a tough three hole stretch where I go scared of the water blowing up my 70s round and yanked three drivers in a row after pumping it long down the middle all day and then hit two of three approaches scared-yanked away from  water as well. Feeling like I can put some 70s rounds together this season!
    • Considering I only played a single round of 9 holes last year and only a handful of rounds of 9 holes in the 6 years before that. Now playing 18 hole on average ever 2 weeks this season. Definitely improved. Not by a drastic amount, but definitely improving. Hitting more pars and bogeys. Driving straighter etc. Practice helps! :D
    • And yet, unlike a politician the only one we con are ourselves.😄  Having said that, the stories we tell ourselves are also the most potent, good or bad. So,  for me the answer is always a resounding "Yes!".
    • I think it is a common fallacy to think handicap number indicates degree of absolute difficulty.  The hole hcp no. simply decides the order of holes where one gets strokes from a player of a lower handicap.  And no, it is not necessarily the ' hardest hole first  The hardest hole could be hard for players of all levels then it would not be no. 1.
