I've been able to figure out about how much my ball will check depending on the green, club and positioning in my stance... but the other day, my ball spun back a good 4 feet. I've never really been able to make the ball spin back that far. i've been able to make it bounce and spin back maybe a foot to the original landing place...but never 4 feet. my questions are
how do you judge the amount of spin that you'll be putting on the ball & is it controlled with the positioning in your stance as well?
I should know this...and feel like an ass for asking...but I figured..what the hell.. that's what this forum's for.

I am not sure if this is proper way or not, but this is how I do it. More spin - slightly shorter backswing with a hard downswing trying to hit down on the ball to pinch it to the turf. Less spin - fuller backswing except not quite as hard on the downswing. Instead of pinching the ball, I try and scoop it from underneath with 'dead hands'. This gets me the drop-and-stop, but not the spin back. Since you mentioned it - I have no idea about where in my stance the ball is in regards to how much the ball spins. I am usually middle to back on most shots regardless (6-iron through wedges), so I don't know if that has any effect on how much a ball spins for me.

I am not a master of spinning a ball by any means, but I can control it somewhat if I need to. It is hard to explain -- it is more of a feel situation for me when I am over a shot. Also, a lot of it depends on the club. My irons are older so I usually only get the drop-and-stop with them regardless of how I hit the ball. However with the Cleveland wedges I have, I have to be a little more careful because the ball spins more with them.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Don't forget that wind, elevation, and slope of the green can have an influence on spin

I prefer the tried and true "hit-and-hope" method.

i think its more of a personal preferance depending on your swing path and speed of your swing and the angle of your swing at impact
