So I suck at match play, apparently.

Two years running I've made it into the Nevada State Match Play tournament ([cough]as seventh alternate both times...[/cough]) and two years running I've been bounced in the very first round. I played a lot better this year than I did last, but still. I felt I should and could have won this year's match, but ended up choking pretty badly. Below is the cards:

The only thing I'll offer is, try to stay within a particular shot. In some ways, you have to play your opponent. When he's in trouble and looking like bogey, maybe you back off and try for a safe par. If he's staring at birdie, maybe you have to be more aggressive with your approach. However, each plan needs to focus only on the shot at hand. Don't think, "I've got to make 3," instead say, "I've got to take the aggressive line at the second tree on this shot." Don't think ahead. I'm not saying you do, just a guess/piece of advice.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

I think you just nailed the hammer on the head with the "Don't think ahead" piece of advice with me and my game at least. I know for a fact that I was thinking ahead to the holes we had to play and how I was going to play them before we were even close to getting there. I need to be more "in the moment" if you will while playing match play.

Thanks!!!

Just play to kill.... i mean win. I like match play and really thrive off it when I'm playing. I'd take match play over a scramble or stroke play any day.

I find that I play better during match play when I take the risks and not play for score. Yeah, the match has more up and down swings, but that's part of the fun.

Hmmm, the rounds are seeded, right?

If you went in as the 7th alternate, I thinks it's fair to say that you are hitting one of the top seeds in the first round. Maybe it's not your match-play head, but rather your entire game, that needs some tweaking?

I must say I love match play but I have had my share of "choking" as it were. The worst being when playing for the club championship and was two up with two to play and lost on the first extra hole. I was devastated. I think many times we tend to get caught up in our opponent's round. He may be in trouble and you say to yourself "let's be conservative" so you can win the hole. But the reason you get there in the first place is because you were aggressive, trying to make birdies. I'm not saying that if you're up one, playing the last hole (a par 5) and your opponent is taking a drop you try to get home in two over water. But you just need to stay focused and loose and give yourself the best opportunity to make pars which hopefully turn into birdies. You have to play to win, not play not to lose. Make sense? I don't know, I've had rounds where I got big leads and lost them and also came from behind to win. The best rounds were the ones where I let the bad shots go and immediately focused on redeeming myself on the next shot.
