so everything was going so well this year. i was excited b/c i started scoring really well on a consistent basis. for the past few weeks, i've been up and down all over the place. but the biggest problem is squaring the club face upon impact.

for some reason, ever since I learned how to draw the ball, I got used to seeing a closed head b/c i'd have a closed stance. now when my stance is neutral, I still setup with a closed face..or if I open the face, somehow it ends up coming back to closed upon impact.

do you have any tips to get this out? there's only a month of really good golf left, and I need to get this out so i can be happy when the season ends! not to mention i shot a terrible 92 the other day.

Have you tried a more neutral or weaker positioned grip? That way the club face will have less tendency to close as much at impact.

I always go back and re-verify my basics: Neutral grip, proper ball position, square stance. These things can slip on you and can go un-noticed. Then, if I were having your issue, I would start practicing a fade.

This breifly happened to me on my last round with my 8 iron, try choking down a bit, it gives you that extra control to connect square with the ball.

Yoshi, if you have the ability to do so, take a normal swing and then stop it right almost at impact, It's hard to do, but If you can do that, take a look at how your wrists and forearms are positioned. The slight rotation of the wrist can close the face.

Maybe provide a video and I may be able to help you out a little more. I still sometimes upon impact have an open face, and its caused by my arms leading the swing and starting the downswing instead of my body along with my arms.

dude, I just did it. even if I keep the club face open, my wrists are compensating by rotating way too much on their own on the down swing. the only way i can hit it straight now is if I don't release my hands & that isn't a consistent hit.

I used to be able to say, i'm gonna play a fade, straight or draw..and it was cool it'd work out 60% of the time. now it's just i have to draw everything. as for my alignment, it's ALWAYS been poor, but when you're making wedges turn more than 15 feet from right to left of my target line, there's a PROBLEM!

Take a couple swings with your wrists perfectly locked and stiff, without any movement at all. And see how you make out, after you have done that for awhile, gradually work back into your original swing to see what happens.

Can't really think of any good drills out the top of my head, but I know whenever I have a problem I remove it from my swing, and then gradually work it back in, which seems to work for me.

One thing that helped me when I was having issues with releasing the club inconsistently was to try to think of my hands as totally passive in the swing; the hands obviously move, but only as a reaction to the movement of the upper body and arms. Concentrate on moving your hips, shoulders, and arms like you normally would (assuming you're doing those things well), and try not to influence your hands at all during the swing. Just let them go where the movement of your arms and the momentum of the club takes them.

Also, obviously, pay close attention to the grip. If your grip is very strong, then passive hands might still produce an overly closed face, so you need to find the grip orientation that fits the way your hands naturally release the club.

I just posted something that is helping me deal with this very issue. At the very least it's something you can try:

Have you tried swinging the club with the face slightly open and keep the face slightly open at impact and after impact and all the way to your finished swing?

In other words you do not turn the club over and close the face but keep the club face at the same position all the way throughout the entire swing.

you can also try this will the driver and adjust the face slight open or closed to play a slight draw or slight fade.

I've tried all of this. The weaker grip I used to swing with...but for some reason I can't even hit the ball with a neutral or weaker grip. it just feels so damn uncomfortable. It started trickling down to my irons now...I never had a strong grip before and now i do. it's TERRIBLE!

Thanks everyone for your tips. i'm gonna try all of them.

try your grip and the following:

1) open the club face 2) take the club outside the target line 3) keep the face open with closing the face 4) try a punch shot first and then the full swing

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
