Which suburbs?

The DFW metroplex is HUGE! (for example, if you are in Garland, you probably don't want to be trekking all the way to White Settlement.)

Texas Star in Euless comes to mind as a top-notch muni, but there are a number of excellent non-muni public courses. Some can be pricey though.

This might have some helpful info:

If you feel up to it, I'd recommend taking a trip up to Frisco. They're at least 3 good spots to test out. Frisco Lakes is about a year old but the greens are really true. I haven't tested out The Tribute but from what I've heard, it's a good links course for TX. Trails of Frisco is also nice too and a decent challenge as well. Let me know what you think.

I played both courses at Bear Creek when I was there last time. Both nice, Easet course is better though. Think I only paid $35 a round for them.

http://www.tenisonpark.com/golf/proto/tenisonpark/ If you're near Tenison Park, go for it - 10 minutes from downtown. Respectable tract where Lee Travino learned his chops. Lot's of stories from the locals - Travino and friends used to hit silver dollars over the clubhouse for closest to pin competitions, winner take all. I can't image it. If you're into quick Mexican, there is a small Mom and Pop dive that is off the main road as you enter the course. The owner made me up a special order of chili verde sauce that kept me warm for a month. A hole-in-the-wall but good Mexican. There may be better courses to play but I had a great afternoon with friends, new acquaintances, and good golf!

I've played Tribute several times and enjoyed it each time. Pricey, but if you play after 2:00pm it's not that bad. Texas Star was fun and if you don't mind driving, Twin Lakes at Canton is a fun test.

WITB - about 15lbs. of clubs, a few balls, tees, and a windbreaker
