Before you say, "Well, just get a gap wedge," please hear me out.

I have Mizuno MP29's.

The 9i is bent to 45*, the PW to 50* (those are weaker than specs).

I carry Pelz SW, 55* and LW 60*.

I hit the 9i 145 yards, the PW 135, the SW 110 and the LW 100. I also carry a 64* wedge, so I'd really rather not have to trade that out for a GW.

None of this makes sense to me. 5* difference in the 9-PW is 10 yards, then another 5* to the SW is 25 yards, but then another 5* loft is only another ten yards. Looking at how far the pros hit LW and SW, I don't think I should be hitting those any further, but I hate being 115-120 yards out and having to mess around with my PW instead of having a "go-to" swing at that distance.

Maybe I should just get a gap wedge.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I had a similar problem I was hitting my gap wedge same distance as my PW. Turned out the spec of shaft in my gap wedge was different to the PW even though they were both suposed to be regular. Aparently one manufacturers regular is different to anothers. Got the same shaft put in my gap wedge as my PW and now have no problems.

The same occurred to me, due to the shafts. Apparently, good shots with my 50º went the same distance as with mi 46º PW.

It´s more a thing of distances than degrees, so you can better focus in covering the distances. It´s true that it made sense to begin filling the gap with wedges, but it isn´t always as easy...

I'm not trying to simplify things here but ... its your swing. I would venture to say you are subconsciously delofting your SW and LW too much.

I'll take any advice I can get - but if I'm delofting the shorter clubs won't that exacerbate the issue if I fix that problem?

Oops... Let me try this again.

Maybe you are subconsciously not delofting them as much as the 9 and PW.

Maybe.

But my 8 iron is 160 (9i=145, PW= 135). I'll check it out, but I can't believe I'm making that much different a swing with the SW than the PW. Could the Pelz wedges give me that much "hit" less than the Mizuno's? Seems like a stretch.

I'd say it could be a combination of any of the things listed above. Shafts, delofting, specs, swing issues - what ever. Why not just pull the PW back one degree and strenghten the SW a degree? And let the loft specs be damned. Good luck! And keep that 64.

I'm a little worried about getting too much bounce - I'm already two degrees weak.

I have given some thought to strengthening the SW, since I use the LW out of the sand most of the time anyway. Good suggestion.

Simple solution: make sure you don't have any approach shots that are greater than 110 yards and less that 135 yards.

Kidding.

Have you tried a 52 degree wedge to see if it splits the gap for you? If it does, and you don't use your 64 degree wedge much, then maybe you should go with 52. But first, go get all your lofts examined to see if they are on the money. Maybe your pitching wedge is a degree strong and your sand wedge a degree weak.

Go ahead and fill that gap.

The distances you hit a 50° and a 55° at full swing should be perfectly covered by a 52.5° wedge. I know you know this is the obvious answer, but it is the most correct. Get a 52° or 54° wedge and bend it the .5°+/-.

Well, maybe.

But why, with the lofts what they are, does my distance vary so much? To do what you suggest, then I'd have 60º, 55º, 52.5º, 50º and 45º. That just doesn't look to me like a progression that would give equal yardages.

You are a good bit longer than I am. But here are my distances with my irons - 9i bent to 45*, Gap Wedge bent to 50*, 55* SW, 60* LW. I could have bent my PW to 50* - I bent the gap wedge to get a somewhat reduced bounce.

LW - 75 yards SW - 90 yards Gap - 110 yards 9i - 123 yards For whatever reason I also have a somewhat larger than anticipated yardage gap between my 50* and 55* clubs. dave

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things? TIGER WOODS' AMATEUR VICTORIES YEAR WIN(S) 1984 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1985 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1988 Boy's 11-12 Junior World Golf Championships   1989 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships   1990 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships, Insurance Youth Golf Classic   1991 U.S. Junior Amateur, Boys 15–17 Junior World Golf Championships, Orange Bowl International Junior Look at some other AJGA Players of the Year. How many of these names do you recognize? A few, for sure. I assure y'all, I'm not trying to pee in your Cheerios. I just don't get what the point is. Okay. I get that, then. Thanks.
    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
