I've been golfing for about 8 months now and I'm in the market for some new irons, and was fitted on a launch monitor today, i tried several clubs (all 6 irons), and my swing speed was 84-90, the fitter says I'm right on the line for stiff or regular, so if you guys could give me a little more information to help me choose I would appreciate it.

What is your swing plane like? Do you fight the ball either right or left? What is your trajectory? What shafts was he trying to fit you into?

I have a slight fade, he tried many diferent shafts, but all were stock, for their respective companys head, I tried the Burner Plus, the Tour Burner, Cobra FP II, and the Cleveland CG golds and reds, I tried all with stiff and reg. shafts, and had pretty much the same results with all the clubs, except the Burner Plus I was hit a little left for some reason. I dont understand your swing plane question.

I have a slight fade,

I would not worry about a slight fade but if you ever fight the bal to the right shafts that are to stiff will exaggerate that.

I believe the latter club has more offset, not sure though.

I dont understand your swing plane question.

Poorly worded on my part, are you a sweeper or a digger? IOW; Steep or Shallow angles of attack?

I'm a digger for sure

Welcome to the club........ DA .........Diggers Anonymous...... Nothing wrong with digging those irons........I'm unable to learn any other way....don't even want to. If I were on the border......I would go with Regular flex. Why?....you'll benefit from the extra kick/snap/callitwhatyouwill that will promote a higher trajectory. Sometimes I wish I had done so....I erred the other way...the Stiff way. It's too dang expensive to change 'em out.....so...next set will most likely be regular flexed steel shafted irons.

Also depends on whether you are a swinger or a hitter.

For a swinger, best to hard step x1 and with your ss I'd think hard stepping a regular flex would work well. I have around the same ss, I am a swinger so I get regular flex and hard step x1 For a hitter, best to soft step x1. I didn't have to do anything to the PX 5.0's I put into my Mizuno's and they are sweet. Sounds like it will just be a matter of time before you start doing a lot of your own work. Its not that hard and fun tweaking your clubs. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I think that the most important thing is how it feels to you and ask a club pro for his opinion before you buy!

I think you have it opposite.

A hitter has a more aggresive transition from backswing to downswing, so he loads the shaft more than a smooth tempo swinger. ie. Hard step for hitter.

Bingo.

THats why sergio plays such a stiff shaft. He may have the same ss as many other pros, but he is a major hitter, thus giving him the need for a heavier stiffer shaft. (Sorry that might have been a bit off topic)

No, actually that is correct, however I should have taken it a little further.

A swinger hard steps the lesser of the flexes becuz it is a smoother swing and doesn't load the club as long as a hitter. A hitter goes to the stiffer of the flexes and soft steps, becus their swing is more aggressive and loads the shaft longer. One has to play around with this for awhile so you know what kind of feel you like. From there just go at it striaght on, IOW see how regular and stiff feel before considering stepping. In many cases you don't have to step either way. Stepping is just a way of fine tuning the shaft to your feel. IMO, rifle shafts are very good at this becuz they go in 1/2 incraments, i.e. 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, etc. and generally don't need to be stepped. My apology for not explaining what I was getting at better; I hope this helps.

imho - couple of my buddies use to play for D1 Colleges. Flex and shafts are based on the speed of your swing (acceleration thru impact, not how fast you bring your club back), your age - older players tend to have lesser flexability therefore less coil which leads to uncoil acceleration speed to be slower.

X-stiff flex are for pro's.
Stiff flex
Regular flex shafts are for slower swing speed and juniors

Graphite shafts are for older players.

i am in my late 20's with 102 mph swing speed. i play nike forge blade stiff flex, shaft dynamic gold.

Whoa there with the generalizations bud. First off I know of plenty of amateurs that play X-stiff shafts, and even met a kid in in Oregon who was 16 and he swung X-stiff shafts. Now myself, I am 15 and I have a 95-98 MPH swing speed, and play stiff shafts in all of my clubs. Graphite shafts are not just for older people, a friend of mine plays graphite shafted irons because he doesn't like the feel to steel shafts in irons. So please don't make broad generalizations, as is with golf, anything can happen.

Here's what I play:
