I'm wanting to know if there are any low handicappers (say 8 and under) hitting SGI irons. And if so, what influenced your decisions to go with SGI irons in your bag.

I began to think about this after playing with a couple guys that shoot in the 70s regularly. One I'd never met, but he was hitting most of his greens and only droping a bogie every 3 or 4 holes. I looked in his bag after 4 or 5 holes after being impressed with his consistancy and ball flight into the greens. I was suprised to see some Taylor Made Burner model, and nothing over a 6 iron. I expected to see blades up to the 3 iron after seeing his ball striking abillity. Another guy, one of my friend's dad, is still hitting x12s and about to get a set of x20s. Those are more like GIs I know. But I see him miss very few greens, and never ever 3 putt. He can just plod along and turn in a 78.

So I'm now begining to think, "who the hell am I to hit player's irons?" even though I only carry them from the 7 iron down.

I've seen a few sigs of 3 and 4 handicappers on here with SGIs in the bag. Maybe you guys can give me some advice that will reign in my ego. I really can't/don't get in a ton of range time.

Thanks all y'all for the input!

Well im a 9 handicap and I play the Cleveland Launcher irons and these are a sgi iron set. I have always hit these irons well since the 1st day I placed them in my bag and I really want to replace them, but I it them so well. I will probably get new ones soon because I need a stiffer shaft and a thinner topline.

i play the r7's from taylormade, which are game improvement, however so does kenny perry. I realize these are not sgi irons, but i found that to be very interesting when i heard him say that.

The trend on the nationwide and senior tour (and to lesser degree on PGA), Hybrid irons 3,4 easy to hit 5,6 and blades 7-->LW. I feel that unless you are below scratch, hitting blades 3,4,5,6 is questionable.

I play PingEye2's. Played them for 15 years, then decided to play blades, or blade type irons. In the past few years went through MP33's, TM Rac Forged TP's, Cally X-Forged, and then... went and put the Ping's back in the bag.

I'm a decent ball striker - my hdcp is roughly a 5. I do keep a set of Titleist blades to practice with, and have the ole trusty Titleist 983E to use on the range. These keep me hitting the sweetspot of my clubs, or conditions me to try, anyways.

I guess I just got tired of being penalized for mishits on the course. Nothing feels better then a purely stuck blade, but when it's off just a bit, I'd rather be able to score well, and the more game improvement irons affords me that luxury.

In the Titleist bag on the ClicGear 2.0:

PILOT: Titleist 910 D2 Axivore Tour Red

3 WOOD: Callaway 3-Deep 13*

Hybrid: TaylorMade RBZ 22*

IRONS 3-PW: Mizuno MP-32

WEDGES: Vokey TVD 54* SM5 58*K

PUTTER: Rife 2-Bar Blade

BALL: Penta 5

Although I'm not a low HCPer, I've been playing these Adams Tech OS for about 3 months now, which is like 5 years in my golf bag time. I've got a friend that says in his (small) home town, if you play any GI (much less SGI) you will get severely taunted (the best game money can buy, etc), so I know where you're coming from. I started with the Ping i3, and have played all the i's. I've hit the G's from time to time, but I wanted to play the "harder" irons. Now that I'm in past 40, I've discovered that I like to play and enjoy myself while out on the course, that golf should be fun, and that is easier with clubs that are more forgiving. There's enough bad/unfun in life to drag that onto the course intentionally by playing clubs that someone else likes but you can't hit (or at least hit well 100% of the time). Do I miss the "harder/player" clubs, sometimes, but when I catch one toward the toe and it carries the water, I don't feel so bad .... jmoc

This September, I switched irons from Taylormade R7 TP to Titliest AP-1 moderate game inprovement irons and added a hybrid in place of my 3 iron. Within in 3 rounds I was playing my best golf of the year and would have broken 75 for the first time in many years if not for a balky putter. There is such a difference between a mishit that ends up short and in a bunker versus one that still finds the green.

My Tools of Ignorance:

Driver: Ping I20 9.5*
Woods/Hybrids: Cobra AMP 3W and 3 HY

Irons: Cobra AMP 4-GW

Wedges: Callaway Forged Copper 56* and 60*

Putters: Scotty Cameron  35" (Several of the flow neck blade variety)

Ball: Bridgestone B330-RX and Srixon Z-Star

Bag: Nike Performance Carry

Your friend hangs out with Jr. High schoolers?

From my own experience, I can't remember ANY ONE of the 100's of different people I've played golf with in the last ten years, friends, strangers and fellow club members, ever make ANY comment about another person's choice of irons. Sure, the new driver gets noticed when it is pulled out on the first tee, and the various putters that are used, but I have yet to see anyone given grief for playing a GI club. In any case, I pretty much got over that peer pressure thing by the time I was in high school. Until I began my own search for a new set of irons early this summer, I don't think I EVER payed ANY attention to what clubs anyone else was playing.

I wish I could say the same. There is this one guy at my home course with a monsterous vanity handicap that I can't stand getting grouped with. He bombs it 300 the one out of 5 times he doesn't majorly top and worm burn it. He assumes that a free 2 club length drop from "planted trees" (the new young steaked trees) means a 2 club drop from the very edge of any tree on the course. He never puts out, EVER. He carries, no lie, about 18-20 clubs. He is forever taking practice shots during a match. The guy is everything bad that's said about cheating golfers. And they guy gives advice on how to be better like him. I got grouped with him once in a scramble a couple years ago when I was a C player that week and he was a B. In 9 holes, we used one of his drives, the only one he hit even remotely in play. I think he carries (claims)a 4 or 6 handicap.

Anyway, our first time playing together, he looked in my bag saw the CG2s and began mouthing off about how you had to be a pro to hit them and giving me a lecture about equipment and such. I didn't bother telling him I could name the loft, lie and length specs of just about every major brand of irons on the market. My equipment knowledge is not lacking. I just watched as he carded 4 over on the first 3 holes knowing that by the rules he was really about 12 over through 3. Of course I beat him through 9 by something like 5 strokes over what he CLAIMED to have scored. The point of that rant is, I've met people that comment on your clubs. Some are compliments, some are not. I don't really care about that. That's why you might see me playing blades, GIs, whatever. But I like to be real honest with myself about my game, unlike the guy mentioned above. I've just noticed lately that I'm leaning on my SGI 6 iron a lot. I love the confidence it instills in me. The shots always come off high. And if I'm not sure if my player's 7 iron is enough to reach the green, I don't feel any ego blow by grabbing that 6. I'm wondering how great that would feel on down through my wedges. Rant over.

Dude, I feel sorry for you, hopefully you get the opportunity to avoid that guy forever. The guy I started golfing with wasn't that bad, but close. I started "not" being available for his outtings and the last time I played with him he busted his 5 wood over his knee and gave the game up. Life is too short for four hours of that.
I like the looks of the Cobra S9, I'd get the rest of the set and see what happens. I love my Adams and I have a set of Wilson Staff Di7 that are money..... jmoc

I feel for you. Maybe it's my demeanor. Or my age. It just never happens. If someone I don't know began giving me lessons or recommending what equipment I should use and they didn't immediately recognize the signals I was sending by the look on my face, then I would not hesitate to politely ask them to STFU.

Yeah this guys wasn't getting the stare down. So I flat told him I wasn't interested in hitting his shovels. And that I prefered to make a good stroke and such. Then I proceeded to laser some of the best 3 approach shots on the firt 3 holes that I've ever hit in a row. I can't believe that haha.

Dude, I feel sorry for you, hopefully you get the opportunity to avoid that guy forever.

I most certainly have. I say hi and that is it! Our schedules just don't sync up.

If he's looking for a game I really have to be playing fast today, the girlfriend is waiting. I'll just loop it by myself. Thanks though. OK guys, my bad for getting off my own topic!

Neva!

I love my MP32, you can tell me that no one should play blades under the 7 iron, i play mine down to the 2, but i get around just fine. Whenever people say, why do you play those, i reply, because they fit me best. They certainly dont fit everyone well, but i like the trade off's you get with blades.. teh day i need SGI's, i think may be the day i quit golf lol. But really, if you play something like the mp60, they are not taht much harder to hit than anything else, i think people just get really caught up in thinking clubs are too hard to hit, and then they really cant hit them.

My thoughts..

i play mizuno mx 19 irons cause i like them i tried all the blades and i like mx 19 because
you can still work them but when you have a miss hit you lose 5 yards not 20 and no they dont have the fell of forged but i am better with them like i just dont miss greens if i have a chance to hit it like there so nice but i am with most guys i have sgi because i can't deal with the shovels like the big bertha irons there digusting but i dont mind the mizunos cause there not that bigg really and you can work them i suggest ether mx 19 or mx 25 or mx 100 the ones that replaced the mx 19 cause you will still have the confidance of being able to work the ball but that miss hit will still get on the green

Wait, you miss 20 yards on mishits with blades?

you see, thats the kind of info that makes people not want to play blades..They hear people like you saying that you will lose such massive distance with baldes if you mis hit them, and its simply not true.

Wait, you miss 20 yards on mishits with blades?

Really, it depends on your definition of a mishit. I tend to agree that some "player's irons" are way more forgiving than they look and get credit for. But I have a set of MP14s that I practice with sometimes. I even game them on the rare ocassion that I think I'm improving my ball striking. And they will definately lose 20 yards on a mishit. But I hit my S9 6 iron into a par 3 the other day. I could feel the club bounce into the shot even while the ball was setting on a low tee. I dropped my head and said a few expletives. Then after seeing where the shot hit I was amazed to drive to the green and drop the 15 foot putt for birdie. I fixed my ball mark and it was about 15 feet from the ball. I know that is not the way it should be. But it worked out quite well on the card.

    • Haha I made a I typo. I was thinking two things at once, ‘I don’t think bogey is a bad score’ and ‘I think bogey is a great score’. But I mixed them up and said the opposite
    • How isn't bogey a great score? As a 20 handicap every single time you make a bogey you are playing better than expected. Because if you bogeyed every hole you'd most likely be lower than a 20. You're a high handicap playing a hole that is lined with hazards the entire length of it on both sides.  Bogey is a very solid score for you on that hole.  From 300yds off the tee PGA tour players average 3.71 strokes to hole out. As a high handicap you are going to be more than 1 full stroke higher than that, probably closer to 2 full strokes higher.  If you had 100 different 20 handicaps play that hole I would bet a lot of money that the scoring average is greater than 5.0 Sometimes courses have really hard holes. Play for your bogey, be ecstatic about a par, and do everything possible to minimize double bogey.
    • Wordle 1,056 3/6 🟨⬜🟨⬜🟨 🟨🟨🟨⬜🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
    • I don’t think bogey is a great score here. Will try the 7i - 7i approach. If I’m short, I think I can get out of the bunker and if I’m on the right I can chip up.
    • Super narrow hole. Stroke average will likely be well over par here. Since it seems like it only plays what 300-305 for you from white tees I don't think 7i - 7i is the worst play if 7i dispersion is small enough that it would hardly ever reach the penalty hazards.  But if your 7i dispersion brings the hazards into play then you're likely better off hitting something further up there since everything would have the hazard in play.
