Which 200 yard club to buy?

Hi. I'm looking for a club to fill in between my 9 degree driver (220-240yds) and 19 degree 3 hybrid (190yds). I'm thinking a 3 wood? Or should I go for a 13 degree hybrid fairway club? Any help is vastly appreciated.

If your handicap index is 36 I wouldn't recommend neither a 3W or 13° hybrid, why not look for a 5W?

...or a 4 wood (easier to hit off turf than 3 wood without giving up much distance). A 4 wood will have a loft someware between 16* and 18* (usually 17*) and is sometimes not marked as a '4W' - just go by the loft. A lot of people have switched to 4 woods recently due the heads on 3 woods getting larger, making them more difficult to hit off turf. A 4W has a smaller head like a 5W, which makes it easier to hit off turf (fairway).

A 13* hybrid can sometimes be more difficult to hit because of the small amount of loft and will probably have a shorter distance for you than a 4 or 5 wood. Normally a hybrid is easier to hit, but when you get down to a loft that low they can still be difficult, especially off turf. If you only want it for tee shots, then 13* hybrid might be OK.

I like the idea of a 5W as well. I think for a higher handicaper, it would be easy to hit. You could just as easily go 4 wood. It may fit your gaps a little bit better than a 5W. I'm sure you could hit a 3W, but many higher handicapers find them difficult to control...My advice: test a few 3's, 4's, and 5's.

And since when do they make 13* hybrids? That's insane!

I would agree with the 5 wood over a 3 wood here. Maybe even a hybrid because it will be more versitile. The higher loft and shorter shaft will be easier to control. I think control is more important than distance when you are trying to improve your game...assuming that is a goal. Which brings me to my next question because I do not know what is in your bag.

What wedges to you carry?

Depending on your answer, I might say your next club should be one you can score with. If you are giving up most of your strokes around the green, I would focus on that. If you are giving up most of your strokes over 220 yards, then a 220 club might be your answer.

Dang. Forgot to change handicap in user cp. From 100 yards in, I'm golden. It's the 100-200 yard shots that mess up my scoring.

My main desires for a 200 yard club are for those 200 yard par 3s, and for when I'm 175-200 yards from the green on my approach shot. For now, it looks like a 3 wood is not a good choice. Thanks for the suggestions.

my 2 iron fills that 200-215 yard gap nicely. if you can play your irons fairly well.. id sugess picking one up...

i carry a 4 wood with me but rarely use it.

I vote for a 4 wood as well. It's a very versatile club. Always liked the 4 wood better (which is why I have the 15' 3 wood instead of the 13').

I see you're a 23 index so let me ask you a couple of things:

How often do you need to hit the 200yrd shot and how often do you hit 190yrds accurately enough to be able to rely on it? Versus when trying to hit it 200yrds in one shot actually ends up leading to 3 strokes? You're probably going to need 2 shots to get the ball on the green anyways since most people are not going to hit the green from 200yrds out even if you are a low handicap. Why not hit 2 good shots instead of trying to make one spectacular one? Why think like a scratch player when breaking 90 would be a career round? Just don't get all caught up on what the "par" is on a hole, a boggie IS par for a 23 handicap and a par is basically a birdie on your scorecard. I don't want to bring you down but its much cheaper to on your wallet and on your scorecard if you play within yourself. But if you really want to know what club to buy, I would tell you to get a hybrid. They are easier to hit than even a 5w.

200 yard club....for you I would suggest a lower lofted hybrid. maybe 16°-17°, should do the trick.

Don't you think you have to actually go out and hit some woods and hybrids in various shaft/head combinations and find out what YOU hit 200 yards? I would suggest doing that, then you will know and have the right club.

Very good advice. I started thinking a little differently, and overall my scores have lowered following a very similar way to the one you suggested.

Though it doesn't account for what the OP posted mid-thread. Which is still the same tough battle I face. What to use on a 200 yd par 3? About half or more of the par 3s I play don't allow a lay-up. TO the OP... In my first set of clubs I had a 18* and 21* hybrids to get the job done. Sometimes I wish I had a 5wood instead... but the grass is always greener on the other side....
