Viewing Strategy for PGA Tour Event

I searched around and couldn't find a post on this topic.

I'm attending my first tour event in a couple of weeks (Heritage) and was looking for tips or strategy for getting the most out of each day there. For instance, do you pick one group and follow them the whole way? Or do you go to one hole and park it for the day? A mix? Anyone have a "game plan" they use at tour events that they want to share? Thanks much.

It depends who you want to see. The only Tour event that I've been to, we each wanted to see different guys. I wanted to see Bubba, my uncle Phil, and my dad Jesper Parnavik. Phil and Jesper were in the same group, so no biggy, but we just got a hole ahead of Bubba to get a good spot. I think to get the better viewing areas, you have to get a hole ahead of the golfers (when they're on the green, you should be in the next fairway or tee). I've only been to one event, so I'm not sure how true this is.

Like I said, we wanted to see a bunch of guys. Vijay, Phil, Jesper, Bubba, AK, and Jason Day were all there so we tried to see some of these guys. We were all over the place because IMO seeing the same hole gets a little boring. If you want to follow your favorite golfer, then by all means do it. Check out the range too; it's very humbling.

My dad and I used to go to the Ameritech in Illinois. We parked at the 9th Green for half the day which had a good view of 10 tee and approach shots from a par 5. Then once groups had been through we went over to the 18th green about 30yd pitch distance away. It was awesome. Got to see some great golf shots. I like being at a par 5 green that is barely reachable. You get to see some miraculous 2nd shots and great wedge shots from lay ups.

I'd move around if I were you. I went to the 99 US Open ... followed Tom Watson for a while, saw Tiger, Vijay, had Payne Stewart hit out of a fairway bunker a couple of feet from me. Sitting at a green, watching balls come-in and watching guys putt doesn't sound like fun to me.

Odds are you'll be on the wrong hole or looking the other way when the miracle shot is made so don't worry about that part. Just see as much as you can and have fun.

I went to Bay Hill Thursday and I walked all18 holeswith Kenny Perry, and Stewart Cink, Adam Scott. After they finished I sat in the bleechers at #1 tee and watched many of the guy's who started later on the back 9 tee off until Zach Johnson's group came up then I walked the last 9 holes with them and then hung out at the 9th green until I left. Had a great time, saw many, many pro's and by all mean's spend some time at the range and the practice green. All of these guy's have a great short game with fantastic touch around the green. Can't wait for 7 AM because I'm headed back to watch Kenny Perry go around again then I'll hang out at 17 or 18 green until the round ends.

Get yourself invited to a VIP hospitality suite on the 18th green. There's typically free food, open bar, and shelter.

worst strategy-follow the leaders or most popular group on Sunday.
Some good strategies-get there early on Thursday and follow some lesser known players that you enjoy watching on TV. Follow them from the first tee to a dramatic par 3 on the back nine. Get a good viewing spot and camp out there for a while watching several groups go through. When you get bored with the par 3 and find a group you want to "walk in with", follow them.

Don't take a cell phone or camera, don't yell "get in the hole" or "pow" or "you da man"
Respect the golfers and your fellow patrons.

If you are able to volunteer, that would be a great way to watch an event. There is a post on volunteering.

I attended last year's John Deere in Moline, IL. My best advice is to map out the course and the tee times. Circle the groups with players that you are interested in seeing and use basic logic to find out what holes that they should be on at different points. I stayed at the first tee to watch the names I wanted to see tee off: Bubba, J.B. Holmes, Duval, Zach Johnson, Badds, etc. Then went out and watched Phillip Francis, Sean O'Heir, Kenny Perry, Lehman, Charley Hoffman. Then after those few went by, it was time for the ones who I had watched tee off to go by. So with a relatively weak field, I was still able to see alot of the PGA's best.

I went at it two ways when we had a Hogan/Nike tour event in our town. I would find a spot that had a view of multiple holes. I would either start out there and wait for groups I wanted to see or I would follow one group to that spot and wait there for other groups I would want to see then follow them until another point with multiple views. I always prioritized the groups so I wouldn't be jumping all over the course to get a glimpse of a certain player. Also as said previously spend some time on the practice tee especially after the round. It is amazing to see the things they work on after a round.

coming from over here the only pga event ive been to is the open which typically was very crowded! i enjoy walking around though with less known golfers (i.e not tiger, phil, sergio, vijay, etc. etc.) and then towards the end of that groups round finding a spot to watch the rest of the field at 1 of the closing holes!

If you can, try and make it to the Tuesday practice round. Take your camera and walk the course from 18 to 1. You'll see practically everyone.

While out there try and get a feel for the course, find a spot where a few holes converge together where you can spot a couple of greens and a couple of tees. At Riviera holes 13 and 14 cross holes 8 and 9. Its a perfect little spot. Get to this spot during the regulation play.
