I discovered today that I was overswinging. I've been having some severe hooking problems lately. I've been working on grip, alignment, swing plane, etc. and nothing seemed to helped. It wasn't until I just stepped up to the ball and swung at about 90% of normal that I actually had a dead straight shot. Thought it was a fluke but time after time I hit dead straight shots and the distance was actually better than I normally hit the clubs. I was surprised because I never felt like I was swinging too hard but apparently I have been. However, I'm still struggling with my woods. Instead of my normal hook, when I swing easier with the driver I tend to get a pushed shot. Sorry for the pointless thread but it felt so good at the range today that I had to share!

I can relate to the feeling. Hooking is the worst! For me, it was a grip thing that took way too long to figure out. Have fun hitting them straight again!

Glad you found your fix!!!

For me it's usually one of two issues that can jump up and bite:

Tempo -if I don't stay smooth....bad things happen.....I tend to wrench the club back too aggressively and get into poor positions....lifting the club too high.....and then start my swing from the wrong spots. Nice and slow back....smooth transition and into the ball for a full finish....works best for me.

Steady -if I don't watch for impact---bad things happen. I force myself to watch for that instant where impact occurs....with every club....driver through the putter. This keeps me steady over the ball and maintaining the correct height.....not drifting, swaying and looking up at the result before it can occur.

These are the big two things I consider before a shot.

Outside of this I may also lighten grip pressure or adjust follow through position for fades/draws.

One major thing that helps is shortening the backswing. I found that I could take an iron on the range, swing about 50%, and it went dead straight. I eventually increased this to about 80% of what my backswing was and its been helping.

But the most significant change I made was holding the club in the fingertips instead of the palm. This felt really strange at first, like I was going to drop the club at the top of the backswing, but it's nearly impossible to overswing with such a grip.

That is probably my biggest bad habit...I get into a groove where I swing too hard. The thing that helps me is when I address the ball, the first thing I do is get behind it and make a smooth practice swing and I tell myself "Just like that." This has stopped me from swinging my clubs too hard. I was swinging so hard that I was coming up on my toes in the process. When I keep my feet planted, I gut the ball every time. That is now my big "swing key" before every shot.

Stepping down to 80% or so has been the best thing I have done in a long time!

I rehearsed my backswing constantly in a mirror and still do and it's natural for me now as I find the position I want at the top,but my problem was going at it too hard right from the top.Clenched hands, tight forearms, dipping the front knee seemed to be the most common flaws, but I solved this problem by thinking about my transition.

I would just wait until the gears reversed, until I could feel that wind back, and that meant I was now pretty much still on my plane, then I could whip through nearer the bottom instead of wasting power at the top.

Now if I could just be more accurate then I might be decent at this game.

For those swinging too long and too hard:

Take a 3/4 backswing, which will probably feel like 2/4 for you and don't rush to the ball. Almost get the feeling of your upper body resisting rotation in the beginning. Swing from the ground up and don't accelerate the arms before they reach the pocket on your pants. From the top of the swing to where the hands are at the pocket just let the arms fall and focus on hip rotation. From there you can accelerate through.
