What Should I Use?

There's a hole that I love playing at my local golf course. It's a par 3. You have to shoot over the pond. I believe it's 210 yards. I tee up with my 5 wood usually. I've tried the 3 wood before, but it's too much of an overkill. I usually pass the green by 30 yards when i use a 3 wood. When I tee off with a 5 wood, the ball goes soaring straight up in the air, and lands near the green. Question: should I be using the 5 wood on this hole? should i be teeing the ball up? do you recommend for me to try any other clubs on this hole?

I think a hybrid iron would fill in that gap very nicely. I would also help you to hold the green on the approach.

Hybrids are best suited for this type of thing. They fly high and land soft.

If i had a 20-23* hybrid, i would use that. But you're right, 210 is a difficult distance because it's too far for most people to hit an irons onto. i have a real problem when i am playing off the competition tees on the 15th at my local club because its 200 but can sometimes play about 210. I just don't quite have a club for that. But i will soon - Mizuno MP52 with 3 and 4 hybrid option - and a free wedge!

you sound EXACLT like me distance-wise, as i hit my 5 wood about 210 also. and i agree with the others. a 210 yard hybrid would be the ideal club for this shot. but if your 5 wood holds the green, why buy another club just for that one hole? or is it not holding?
and i dont think your 4/5 hybrid will be long enough for that shot. i carry a #4 Nickent 5DX hybrid and i can hit that 190-200 AT MOST

When you say

the ball goes soaring straight up in the air

do you mean it is going too high? Is the trajectory right and it just isn't enough club? How high do you tee the ball when hitting this club? If you are landing just short of the green, then you may still have the distance with that club depending on the answers to these questions

Sounds like a job for the hyrid. I could poke a 4i 210 if i wanted, but there is only a 50/50 chance im going to get a good result. The hybrid was made for those 200-220 yard shots. Take advantage of them.

We call them an "Anthony Kim", choke up on a 5 wood and swing away!
