I am looking for advice on adding/replacing a club. My only fairway wood is an old 7w that is probably 10yrs old that I don't get a very confident feeling when I pick it up. My next club is my 4i. I can't decide if I want to pick up a new fairway wood (5w) or go with a hybrid of some sort. I have never even hit a hybrid so don't know much about them. What kind of distance difference do you see between hybrids and fairway woods (specifically 5w)? I do realize there is not an exact answer, I'm just looking for what experience some of you have had.
Thanks

My set goes: Driver, 16* wood, and then to hybrids. Seldomly do I use a wood from the fairway as it doesn't give me that much confidence. On the other hand the hybrids give me alot more confidence from the fairway so they are more versatile for me.

Driver: Cleveland HiBore XLS 9.5*, Fit-On Red Shaft
3 Wood: Callaway Big Bertha 16*
Hybrid: HiBore 22*
Irons: Mizuno MX-25 4-PW, 2* Flat
Wedges: CG11 50* (2*Flat),54*(1*Flat),58*(1*Flat) Low Bounce AllPutter: Yes! DiannaBall of Choice: Srixon AD333, Wilson ZIP, TF Gamer

I've found that I'm much more confident standing over a hybrid than a wood. The iron-like feel allows me to work the ball better and they're more versatile in my opinion. They work through rough like a knife through butter and provide good distance, even with slower tempo-ed swings.

I used to play Nickent hybrids and liked them, but sold them with my old set. I'm looking to try some Burner Rescue hybrids but wouldn't mind going back to Nickent. They make quality rescue clubs.

I am not a fan of the hybrids, I have tried to hit them and just don't like them. Can't really put my finger on why, but I prefer fairway woods.

I am much better with a hybrid than a wood but it honestly just depends on the player. I would go test out some hybrids and fairway woods and pick what works best for you ....can't go wrong that way.

I also find the hybrids to be amazing. Straight and long. Easy from the fairway or the rough.

Go hit some. Hit a bunch I ended up liking the Cobra bafflers but to each his own.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Im much more confident with my woods than my Hybrids, though I do get some good shots with the Hybrids too. I use my 3 wood pretty much strictly off the tee on a few holes at my regular course where I need to drive into the elbow of the doglegs about 230 yards ahead, and damn near every shot I take with it is close to perfect. And my 5 wood is money in the bank. That club is one of my best by far

In the Ogio Kingpin bag:

Titleist 913 D2 9.5* w/ UST Mamiya ATTAS 3 80 w/ Harrison Shotmaker & Billy Bobs afternarket Hosel Adaptor (get this if you don't have it for your 913)
Wilson Staff Ci-11 4-GW (4I is out of the bag for a hybrid, PW and up were replaced by Edel Wedges)
TaylorMade RBZ 5 & 3 Fairway Woods

Cobra Baffler T-Rail 3 & 4 Hybrids

Edel Forged 48, 52, 56, 60, and 64* wedges (different wedges for different courses)

Seemore Si-4 Black Nickel Putter

I love my hybrid. its great because i cant hit woods out of the rough and i cant hit long irons out of the rough and get good distance but when i use my hybrid out of the rough i get pretty good distance. i would take the hybrid because you can hit it pretty much from anywhere, at least i can.

In my Callaway bag

Burner driver 10.5*
Burner 3 wood
SZ offset 5 wood G10 21* hybrid R7 irons 4-pw CG10 52* wedge 588 chrome 56* wedge Rossa putterany ball i find on the course, i rarely buy balls.

I've banished my 2 hybrid for now and I'm picking up a 5 wood. Something about the hybrid has just never been comfortable for me, and have never found a way to line it up square. I've hit some amazing shots with it, especially out of bunkers and rough that I could never have hit with a 2 iron, but it's so wildly inconsistent (it, the club, not me, the swinger of the club ) that after my most recent duck hook into the woods I finally decided it's out of my bag.

Like everyone says, seems to be a personal preference thing.

Now to add a twist, has anyone picked up an offbrand hybrid/wood at someplace like Academy or Dick's? Do those clubs play that much different than a name brand (Callaway, TM, Tit, Cleveland, etc.)?

Reason I am asking is, I really don't have much experience with either a hybrid or a 5w. I would love to pick up one of the "no name" brands to try it out. If it doesn't work for me, I'm not out much $$. Of course I know all clubs are going to feel just a little different. But, I'm looking for the difference in feel between a hybrid vs. a 5w, NOT the difference between brands on the same club. I don't have anyplace around me where I can try them out ahead of time.
Thanks for responses.

Why not just look on ebay, for a used one, or borrow one for the purpose of finding out if it feels right?

[edit]: I bought my wife a RAM full set at academy a couple of years ago. Messing around, I hit a great drive with the driver from that set. Not much different that with my own driver at that time (Launcher 460).

I use both!

My hybrid is for shorter distance and in the rough for punch shot, long butt etc. The wood gives me distance.

callaway: Steelhead III 5 wood
Hybrids: 18* XLS 3iIrons: MP60 4-PW w/ dgs300Wedges: vokey 52*, vokey 56*Putter: Pro Platium Milled Ball: E6+

Dick's was selling Nickent 3DX hyrbids for $39.99 a few weeks back. I'm not sure if that's still current, but Nickent makes quality hybrids. Otherwise check out Ebay.

It may be wise to go to a shop and demo clubs prior to buying. There's a shop not too far from here with a range out back and I'll go and demo clubs for a few hours prior to spending the money. It's free and entertaining.

I grew up playing the cheaper brand equipment like Bridges and Razor and I can tell you that there is a difference between no-name and name-brand. It's not a gigantic difference and the no-name will be able to work, but I find the name brand equipment to be a little bit better.

I would look at used name brand over the knockoffs or no-name:

I like my callaway x hybrids a lot. I also like my taylormade burner 3 wood. I would start with a 3 hybrid and then if you need another club, get a 3 wood.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
