So, I have had to dodge raindrops (and hormonal pregnant wife) to be able to play, and even hit balls, lately ... I got a chance today to get over to the range today! And I am pretty happy that I did ...

I went in and was looking around at the clubs and everything and something caught my attention in the "bargain barrel" there was a Nickent 3DX ironwood (it's a 3+ iron with a loft of 18.5*) with a stiff UST V2 shaft and the thing looked like it hadn't even been hit (no pop-up marks, no scuffs on the sole plate ... it was clean)...

I am looking at it for a few minutes then the owner says, "do you want to hit it?" well, I've been looking for a hybrid for a while now so I say "sure" and take it out to the range ...

HOLY CRAP! Swung like a short iron with the distance of a 5 wood .. I was hitting this thing 215-225 on the button ... I was able to work the club with my natural fade the same way I like to work my irons ... and it was landing softly on the greens and STICKING (granted we've had about 2 weeks of straight rain, but the shots, I think, would have settled pretty quickly with normal greens) ... I hit about 40 - 50 balls and was sold without even knowing the price ...

So I take it back inside and the owner asked me how I liked it and I told him my thoughts and then I asked why it looked so clean ... "old guy bought it, self-provisioned the fit of the shaft and really didn't need a stiff, traded it out a week after he bought it cause he couldn't hit it." (I know this sounds like the "little old lady car story", but this club was clean ... so I believed him) ... "how much?" I ask ... "for you, a rainy week special deal - $30!"

I plopped down my debit card ...

Anyone else here have one of these? How do you like it? How has it helped you and you game ... I'd like some feedback from you guys, since I trust most of you.

JC...right there with ya!!! My wife is 29 weeks into our first child, and our south florida weather doeas not cooperate on the weekends....I'm having golf withdrawls, and my baby girl is not born yet YIKES!!!!!

As for the 3DX, I have no played it myself, but it was very highly recommended when I was in the market for a 3h. Lot's of folks in this forum and at the store recommended it...stating the most forgiving logest hybrid ever hit. I ended up with a a Cobra DWS 3/R 19*, which fit the gap nicely. I liked the address of the Cobra a little better, and and great success right og the gate with the Cobra, so I stopped looking. Good Luck!
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

Mine is 24 weeks today ... you guys must be due right around my birthday 11/24 ... Beers (or beverage of choice) on me if your wife gives birth on my birthday

... we are having a little girl as well, we are due 10/26 ... it's very exciting times here ... If the old adage is true, and my child does add 5 strokes to my handicap after she is born then I am screwed, cause she's already added 4 and she's not even born yet...

Have the 3DX Ironwood in 23* with a steel shaft. It was great during the honeymoon period but it hasn't been cooperating as of late. Got mine for $20 I think on here. Going to try an Adams Idea Pro in 23* which will have a regular graphite shaft, hopefully one of these two will stay in the bag since I don't remember the last time I hit a 4 iron.

ive seen some new 4dx hybrids on the internet for $50...i want to hit them before I decide, but I think I might replace my fairway woods with them (granted, i've never hit a hybrid before, but from what everyone is saying they will do nicely. that's why i want to hit them first)

might just try to scope some 980F titleist fairway woods off of ebay, though, I haven't decided yet.

hope you enjoy your new hybrid :)

See, I don't see this as a replacement to my fairway woods, I see it more as a completment to them. Like I said I am hitting this thing 210-220 and I can hit my 5 wood 225-235 so right now it fills a really big gap in my yardage (my 4i I have to kill to hit 205 normally I hit it about 195) ... I don't think I am going to replace any of my fairway woods ...

Last fall I picked up two of the Nickent 3DX DC ironwoods (#3 and #4) for $60 each - brand new. I thought that a great bargain at the time.

Lost the cover to the #4 and the paint got chipped up. Then about 4 months ago, I saw them at Dick's for $40. Holy cow! Picked up another #4.

They are pretty good clubs for the price!

Ugh! I can't stand Dick's Sporting Goods! Luckily I have a great local retailer for all of my golfing needs, and becuase of mandated pricing I pay the same there as I do at Dick's for clubs and such they even beat Dick's pricing on golf balls AND, unlike Dick's, they sell individual sleeves of balls (I'm gonna beat the first wise ass-who says anything about this post containing 'dicks' and 'balls' ) ...

I wish I could go back to the range today with it, but I have to get to work, and it's raining .... F'ing AGAIN!!!

I am pretty excited to hear that many of you guys like yours! If it works well for me I might pick up another 3DX to increase the distance of my 4i (maybe a 21* loft instead of the 18.5*) a little bit more (as now I have a 190-215 gap in my game - my 4i I can muscle it to 190) so if I could get that to like 210 that would be awesome!

yeah, and I guess I just don't play courses long enough to need those yardages...most par 5's around here are between 5-600 yards, I don't try to attack them in two so ~280yd drive, 230 3w, short wedge into the green.

the only place I run into trouble are the long par 3's that I usually have to attack with a 5 wood, but even if I miss the green i'm usually close enough to get up/down or bogey (which isn't bad for me) ive got alot more things I need to improve before I tinker with my long game

if you like the 3DX you really owe it to yourself to try the new 5DX. the 5DX is

THE longest, straightest, most forgiving hybrid i have EVER hit. they are insane. the only thing is they are still pretty expensive and they retail for around $199 each, but you can get them new on Ebay for $119 or BARELY used for between $50-$75 on Ebay...

    • You need to stick with one instructor as long as they’re not terrible. There’s no blueprint to improving a golf swing and different instructors may see different things as being more important and try to fix them. The end result is you get a hodge podge of things to work in that may not be cohesive or necessarily help you. If you stick to one instructor and communicate to them as such, they’ll also be able to work out a roadmap to your improvement which is more beneficial in the long run. If a guy assumes you’re just coming in for one lesson you might end up with a band aid.

    • Many thanks.  I read a lot of those posts.   Man, that is really deep.  As an old beginner, during a lesson or on the driving range, I have hit a good shot, you know pretty straight and it goes say 130 yards (7 iron).  The very next swing, I dig a ditch behind the ball.  I know I didn't do the same things on both swings.  Even this last lesson I had, I would hit a pretty good shot, not so on the next shot.  The instructor would quickly point out, "Hey you stayed on your back foot" or "Guess what happened there.  You got all armsy or handsy".  Sort of feels like I need a checklist when I prepare to swing each time.  I can see it now before every swing, "Hey can you guys give me 10 minutes while I run through my checklist".  In all seriousness, I see what you all are saying.  I wouldn't be overthinking it so much if just I could make decent contact most of the time.  Next lesson is about two weeks away.  Can't wait.

    • I was going to link in the same think @snapfade did.  Your swing is already consistent, repeatable, except for nearly "microscopic" differences.  The more mechanically-sound your swing becomes, the smaller and less frequent those "microscopic" deviations become.
