I've been looking into new irons or fixing up my old with new shafts. In this process lots of questions have crept up in my mind. I figured you guys would be able to get me the info I need.

1. Does it matter where you play the ball in your stance for different irons? (i.e. 3 iron in middle stance, wedge in back of stance, or all irons in middle)

2. Why are the shafts different lengths? (this may relate to question #1)

3. What do you get/give-up in going from steel to graphite or vice versa?

4. If I hit the ball high with my current graphite shaft (Grafalloy ProLogics x-stiff) should I go with a standard stiff steel shaft or a low trajectory steel shaft?

5. Does weight matter?

I know it's a lot.. but thanks for the feedback.

1. Yes. Play your 3-iron more forward than your PW, which should be in the middle of your stance.

2. It's easier to hit a nail on the head with a short stick than it is with a long pole. 3. Steel - better control, less torque; graphite - more distance, less control. 4. I could be wrong, but I don't think there is such a thing. 5. Overall club weight (dynamic weight) and swingweight (feel of the club) matter greatly. I mean no disrespect, but how did you get to be a 12 hndcp?

You get to be a 12 by playing and practicing, not by researching equipment ;)

I know scuba divers with thousands of dives who don't know the difference between a piston and diaphragm-style first stage regulator. They got thousands of dives by living in Florida and diving every day. They take their regs in to any of the billion local shops for servicing every year or so. They don't spend time worrying about what technology their regs use or researching different types. Equipment knowledge often goes along with skill in a sport thanks to interest and desire to improve, but some people just use what they have and get better with it.

I play as often as I can.. answer your question?

Funny how everyone seems to think putting "I mean no disrespect" negates a backhanded comment. Maybe could have kept that one to yourself. I play in flip-flops too..

I apologize sincerely for the backhanded slap. I took it for granted that someone with your handicap/skill would know why shaft lengths are what they are and possibly where and why to play the ball in relation to club selections.

In retrospect the comment was unwarrented and uncalled for. Please accept my apology for that comment.

No worries brother... all's good. I've been playing the same gear for almost 20 years.. so I never really put much thought into the engineering... and if I did.. wasn’t sure my assumptions were correct.

I have gotten the same comment. I asked about a new 3w and got flooded with the "A player of your handicap should know this" comments. It's really ridiculous, you know. Just because I can go out and shoot 75 or 76...does that mean I am supposed to know all the ins and outs of new technology? Anyway, sorry to get it off topic but I don't like those kinds of comments.

Here is a quote for those guys:

Wow 20 years? It may be time for new irons. The technology has changed quite a bit. If you are playing an old Driver you have a real treat is store for yourself.

I upgraded a 10+ year old driver and was floored at how explosive the new heads are, it is scary. Good luck.

Well my irons are old... I've changed drivers 4-5 times... and putters a few. I always played my irons well so never saw a need to change. But now I'm thinking of working on my precison more.. hence looking to go back to steel shafts. I hit a 7 iron 170-178yds so I don't really need any more length.

Agreed.. very inappropriate. It's ashame, but we all know on any forum in cyberworld you are going to get those kind. I try not to take it too personal (and yes, sometimes its hard). They don't know you and eveyone has bad days (mentally stessed etc). Nobody is an expert (even if they proclaim themselves to be) but as a whole we can gather good information. I have gotten good information here and will continue to return.

meh, it's not like he's a scratch golfer. my guess is that he's a talented golfer that plays alot.

knew a kid in high school that shot sub-40s (daily, he was a golf teammate that played golf instead of football to stay healthy for basketball season) a week after he started playing golf. just pure talent

Goals: Correct slice on driver/long clubs(close!), work on consistent iron distance, practice aiming irons

If you've been playing the same sticks for 20 years, those grooves have got to be dead, so I would recommend getting new irons altogether. Thought you can always find some good condition clubs that are used so you don't break the bank.

And a prime example of a good golfer not really knowing a whole lot about certain parts of golf is Anthony Kim. If you watched the clinin he gave with Tiger, he didn't know why half the stuff he did made him hit the ball well.

Excellent! Exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to go look at new/newer irons today possibly.

    • Went to a PING fitting day today. Going to be ordering a G430 Max 3w with a 75g x-stiff shaft at 5w length and a 3h. I forget what my fitter did with the shaft on that but she told me she’s going to email the club the specs of everything. The 3w combination we found pretty quickly. As for the hybrid, we tried a bunch of different head and shaft combinations for that distance with mixed results. Then she handed me the 3h and I took three swings with it and knew it was the one.
    • Yeah, this isn't sandbagging. It's outright cheating. He should be banned.
    • That’s quite a generalization. It’s clear that you don’t like water but there are plenty of us that drink it just fine. My daily intake is usually about 20oz of black coffee, 16oz of soda, 8oz of milk mixed into a protein shake, and anywhere between 30-60oz of water. It doesn’t even need to be cold and I kind of prefer it closer to room temperature than cold. I quite like the taste of tap water, with sole exception being the tap water at Magic Kingdom (it’s terrible). I can’t stand when people bring me tap water with a lemon wedge in it. I didn’t ask for lemon in my water.
