Stiff or regular flex in woods and irons?

Is there any gauge besides getting fitted obviously, that can determine what shaft flex you should be playing....??

Also, if your a stiff shaft in woods, are you a stiff shaft in irons?

Usually you can go into a golf store, or a sporting goods store with a good golf department and they could tell you what stiffness you need by watching your swing, or clocking it to determine average clubhead speed. They might also try to sell you the newest shiniest driver for $400 so be ready for that.

Go to a gold store with a simulator. The faster the club head speed usually means the stiffer the club.

I only know about Project X shafts for irons. But usually around the 80's is a 6.0 anything in the mid to upper 90's is 6.5 and anything in the 70's is probably a 5.5.

For woods I would say anything higher than 115mph is extra stiff, anything lower is stiff. I have not clue on the regular stiffness speed though, I have only been close to stiff/x-stiff.

EDIT: If you are hitting in to a simulator (usually free!) and not a monitor (usually costs $$), be sure to hit from exactly the same spot for the closest results.

But withouth a monitor or sim, how would this be determined, can distances with irons possibly determine this??

Im around 150 to 155 carry with my 7 iron, if hit solidly. Can stiff or reg be determined by that?

My guess is 5.5 (a little stiffer than regular, but not "stiff") Like I said, I only know project X well enough to speak of.

Do you guys think the golfsmith will get right the type of shaft I should play if I pay 20 bucks for the fitting? Heard bad things about fittings there.

I dont expect much, but I'd like to know if I need a standard length and stiff shaft... You think theyd mess that up?

Right now Ive got some old irons with a regular flex steel shaft.... wondering if Im playing the wrong stuff.

Its pretty hard to tell without swing speed numbers....however, if your hitting your 7 iron 150 ish when solidly hit then my guess..and its purely a guess, based off of that would be regular flex.

Im gonna head to golfsmith and pay the 20 bucks to figure this all out. What swing speed calls for a stiff flex? I'd like to know before I go in, I trust you guys more than the golfsmith guy (no offense golfsmith guy )

Im quite sure I'll be swinging a 6 iron.

      Went to a PING fitting day today. Going to be ordering a G430 Max 3w with a 75g x-stiff shaft at 5w length and a 3h. I forget what my fitter did with the shaft on that but she told me she’s going to email the club the specs of everything. The 3w combination we found pretty quickly. As for the hybrid, we tried a bunch of different head and shaft combinations for that distance with mixed results. Then she handed me the 3h and I took three swings with it and knew it was the one.

      That’s quite a generalization. It’s clear that you don’t like water but there are plenty of us that drink it just fine. My daily intake is usually about 20oz of black coffee, 16oz of soda, 8oz of milk mixed into a protein shake, and anywhere between 30-60oz of water. It doesn’t even need to be cold and I kind of prefer it closer to room temperature than cold. I quite like the taste of tap water, with sole exception being the tap water at Magic Kingdom (it’s terrible). I can’t stand when people bring me tap water with a lemon wedge in it. I didn’t ask for lemon in my water.
