First 4 putt of the year...

So I played a great course today. Waverly GC in Plyouth mass. Great experience. But it didn't start out that great...

I was rushed to the first hole as a single, no time to do any putting. I hit it in reg, and promptly putt my ball back off the green... WOWZA! I guess that's what a real, fast putting green plays like. I ended up 4 putting the hole. I can't remember the last time I 4 putt a hole. I ended up shooting an 81 with... 37 putts... DAMN!

81 with 37 putts? That's CRAZY. You must have hit a ton of G.I.R.?

Good job on the ballstriking though.

I 4-putted once this year from like 40 feet. It was pretty pathetic.

Well you made it 8 months without a single 4 putt, thats pretty good in my book ;) haha

Well at least your still on pace for only 1 4 putt the hole year so!

I 4 putted not long ago. Hit a par five in regulation and wind up with a double!! thankfully they are few and far between.

Re: First 4 putt of the year...

lol I haven't 4 putted yet this year, but I have 3 putted quite a bunch. My course has very, very, very, insanely fast greens. I can recall instances where I barely tapped the ball at all, and it rolled uphill off the green 30 feet away.

Re: First 4 putt of the year...

I recently bogied a par 5 that I hit in two.....ouch. Not a happy camper walking off that green. Pin was in a tough spot...just above a valley in the green. I kept going up.....down....up.....etc.

Re: First 4 putt of the year...

Last week I had my first 4 putt (almost a 5 putt) in at least a year, maybe a couple years. It was a par with big sloped green and I was a long way off on a green that is normally much faster than other greens on course. The green was wet and slow despite being a downhill slider so my first putt came up about 20 feet short (yea, I know I'm that good). Second putt was still about 6 feet short (on days when that green is fast that's about the point where putts will often end up rolling 10 feet off the green). My third putt I made sure not to be short again and it just slid across top of hole and rolled about 4 feet down and the across the slope leaving a relatively easy fouth putt up the hill with very little break. I just barely got that one in as it rolled around cup to drop.

A couple years ago I had my only 6 putt ever on a hole that was cut on the very edge of a steep slope - 4 inches past hole from above would be 10 feet past). The greens were lightening fast that day (long dry spell). From 10+ feet below the hole I hit 2 straight putts that didn't quite get to hole and came back to me, each further away than the last. My 3rd putt ran about 10 feet past as I wasn't about to come up short again. 4th putt was 4 feet short as I was trying to baby it then my 5th putt just rolled over edge and ended up down the hill again, about 12 feet or so. But being the clutch player I am I was able to hole that 6th putt.

I absolutely hate when they cut holes in places like that; save that stuff for the guys on TV. The only thing that does is create the potential for slow play since nearly every player on the course is going to struggle there. Although I haven't 4 putted in a while, I've had a few 3 putts lately from inside of 10 feet, which bothers me even more I think.

Yeah 8/14 fairways, 12 GIR. Very very good for me. Probably helped that I was playing a reasonably forgiving course though, and in conditions which are much better than I'm used to.

I had the 4 putt and two 3 putts. Honestly though, if you had asked me right after I smoked my first putt off the green... I would have taken 37 putts in a heartbeat. I was feeling pretty rattled, especially since I was playing with people I didn't know.

Re: First 4 putt of the year...

I can't recall the last time I had a 4 putt. My secret is a short memory and the mentality of a relief pitcher :)

Re: First 4 putt of the year...

I have absolutly no feel for putting these days. 4 putts are a norm for me. At lease one every round or two. 3 putt average is about 10 per round. If I could putt half ass I'd be a mid teen HC'er.

Re: First 4 putt of the year...

A kid who I played against in a high school match 6-putted once haha. So don't feel too bad.
