I know I've read that a lot of people don't like offset (or at least too much offset) in their irons from an aesthetic standpoint.

However, it seems like I've also read that offset helps you get the ball in the air easier than if there is little to no offset.

If that is the case, how does offset help get the ball in the air easier?

If that is not the case, what is the reason to have offset in irons?

Having offset, promotes hands ahead of clubface at impact.....thus improving extention of arms and "smash factor". Also promotes a draw.

Offset may move the CG back and promote higher ball flight, and possibly make it easier to square the face at impact, to help those inclined to slice, depending on the way you swing the club. Too much offset in the hands of those with higher swing speeds won't increase any "smash" factor, but may cause you to draw/hook the ball too much. A lot of players are more comfortable with less offset in their irons than some of the game improvement clubs incorporate.

My r7's have some offset but nothing close to being distracting. What are some irons that have a ton of offset? Big Berthas, Sumos, Burners?

Having too much offset doesnt let you work the ball either..... Your face gets pretty much square and only square with offset, limiting what you can do with the ball

I've heard that to. I just don't see how the couple to few millimeters of offset helps with promoting hands ahead of clubface. Doesn't seem like a few millimeters would make that much difference in that respect.

It doesn't help promote your hands being ahead of the clubface, just helps bail out those who might not get the clubface square.

In response to a previous post, a lot of the game improvement irons have quite a bit of offset, it is becoming more common for it to be "progressive" from short irons to longer irons. I lost my sand wedge early last year, before I got my new irons, and had to dig out my old Ping Eye 2+ sand wedge. It has major offset and I couldn't stand looking at set up to the ball, let alone trying to hit it.
