Do you have a driving range routine? I would be interested in hearing what routines/drills you do when you go practice at the range.

TIA

About 15-20 balls with gap wedge (100-115y)

About 15-20 balls with pitching wedge (135y) About 15-20 balls with 8-iron (160y) About 10-15 balls with 6-iron (180y) About 10-15 balls with 4-iron (200y) About 10-15 balls with 2-iron off low tee (230y) About 10-15 balls with 3W off low tee (250y) Whatever's left, usually go back to hitting gap wedges at the 100 yd sign and try to hit it.

I don't usually stretch enough before hitting the range so I start with about 10 nice easy 7 iron shots. Then start swinging a bit harder and work up to full swing and hit through 6, 5, 4 and 3 irons and 5w. I pick a target for each shot but I am mostly concerned about good, solid contact and straight ball flight.

If I'm only hitting a small bucket, I've got about 20 balls left at this point and I use them mostly on the driver. I have a lot of trouble slicing my drives so if I'm hitting a large bucket at least another 20-30 balls will be hit with the driver.

The last 4-6 balls I smash as hard as I can with either the driver, fairway wood or 3iron. There's no real reason for this. .just fun.

That's what I've been doing lately. I've been going to the range just about every day for a month or 2 but will probably cut back to once or twice a week now that I'm basically hitting well enough to play on a course (just not with my driver).

I do some stretching and swing my hybrid through a rubber tee just to get the swing going then

20 balls GW
20 balls 9 iron
20 balls 6 iron
5 balls 4 iron (off low tee)
5 balls Hybrid
5 balls 3 wood
10 balls driver
what ever left some warm down chips with PW/SW/LW

I usually buy a bucket of 50 balls.

- 10 SW (100)
- 10 8 iron (150)
- 10 6 iron (170)
- 10 4 iron (190)

I drive 5-10 off the tee with my 3 wood or driver.

If I have a larger bucket, I'll repeat but with a draw.

For a large bucket (about 75 balls), I alternate one session doing each
- Lob / Pitching / 8-iron / 6-iron / 4-iron
- Sand / 9-iron / 7-iron / 5-iron / 5-hybrid

If I have about extra time, I'll do 10 each of the clubs below.

5 1/2 shots with lob or sand wedge
5 full shots with lob or sand wedge
5 full shots with pitching wedge or 9-iron
5 full shots with 8-iron or 7-iron
5 full shots with 6-iron or 5-iron
5 full shots with 4-iron / 5-hybrid
5 shots with 3-wood
5 drivers

I then take the rest of my bucket (or go get a small bucket about 35 balls) and do a full 'visualization round'. What I do is imagine in my mind each hole on a particular course that I play often.

I fully visualize each shot I want to hit and imagine the hole layout superimposed on the driving range. I play the entire course (or as many balls as I have left), if I hit my drive good, I then pretend I have 155yds in, pin on the right. I'll then play a little cut 7-iron. If I hit a bad drive, I might hit a punch 4-iron low under some pretend branches. If I miss where my pretend green was, I then would play a little chip shot to a specific spot on the range. I keep track of how many pretend fairways / greens I hit and try to get better each time.

In between, I do my basic pre-shot routine, line up, practice swing, etc. I'll even switch and hit 4-iron off a short tee for a short par 4, then lob wedge or it might be a 6-iron on a par 3 to a pretend green that's marked by a flag out on the range. I'll try and hit 5 yards to the 'safe' side.

This routine, turns the practice session into way more than your normal hitting barrage and makes you think more about each shot. It also calms you down on the course, because you've already hit those shots at the range. It brings your range game to the course and makes your practices more fun and challenging.

I don't really have a routine, but I usually do a few of the same things. I hit balls really slowly on the range. It takes me an hour to hit 50 balls, haha. I take a lot of breaks and just sit there thinking about my swing in great detail. I probably look like an idiot.

I usually start with a 9 iron and then switch between different irons randomly for the first 10-15 balls. One thing I always do is to switch randomly between clubs to make sure I'm not grooving a swing that only works for one particular club. I probably spend 3/4 of my time hitting irons. I also spend a lot of time on drivers and 3 irons because they are the hardest clubs to hit well. Any small error will be magnified by these clubs, which I think is great feedback. Also, I videotape myself fairly often so that I can keep an eye on my swing plane. I look at other things on video, too, but swing plane is my biggest reason for videotaping. Lastly, I almost always end with half wedges, mainly as a confidence booster. If there's a chipping area, I will usually chip some balls after using the range to reinforce the feeling of crisp contact and proper impact position, as well as feel for distance control.

If I'm not working on getting something worked out.

I get a large bucket about 111 balls, I stretch abit but not much, I will practice my swing swinging the club at the rubber tee. I grab my 7 iron and hit a 1/2 swing and then a full swing. Then I hit a full tilt 7wood.

After my little warm up I play my home course in my head (all 18 holes) From tee box to center green, Hitting the the clubs that I would use for each hole using bad lye good lye scenarios - during this practice I will toss in 4 or 5 real bad scenarios that I will try to be smart and creative at laying up.

I always stretch a little bit and then about (5) 3/4 six irons. Then about 10 or so full six irons. Then whatever I'm planning on working on that day.

Once a week, I'll spend two hours at the practice facility.

Spend 45 minutes chipping/bunkers
Spend 20 minutes putting
then hit balls

100 balls (large bucket)

stretch, swing with heavy club or two regular clubs

The following is for no wind situation:
then eight at 100 yard flag (alternating between SW and 3/4 GW)--if strong headwind, it'll be GW and 3/4 PW
then I hit 10 2H or 3H into an imaginary fairway (Tom Watson likes to start with the most difficult clubs-got this from him)
then ten at 150 yard flag (alternating between 9iron draws and 8iron fades)--if strong headwind it would be 8 irons and 7 irons.
then ten at the 180 yard flag--six and 5 irons

Then I'll hit 10 different shots with my 7 iron, draws/fades/low/high always toward an intended target.

Then I'll use the remaining balls and play an imaginary round with them. If I can remember the course I'm playing next, I'll imagine that course.
First hole--power fade driver then 9iron.
Second hole 180 yard uphill par three
Third hole long, narrow par 5
etc.

If I have remaining balls, I'll hit shots at the 40 yard flag.

I usually hit about 100 or so balls each time out.

My general routine (no practice swings once I start hitting balls - it forces me to concentrate on every swing). I take my time and visualize every shot and never aim at the same target twice in a row:
- warm up with 7-iron
- hit around with the 52, 56 and 60 wedges, working on flops, half and full swings
- hit around with the woods
- play a game where I switch clubs after each swing
- the rest of the bucket is used on either odd or even clubs (3-5 shots with each)

I'm usually out there for about an hour.
Cheers!

    • I get kidney stones. So 100 oz of water every day. Some nights I drink 32oz between midnight and 6 Am. Which means I dont sleep much.
    • 46 (9 over) Short game and putts were awful!
    • 46+40 for an 86. I just need to play 9 holes on the range before each round. 🤣🤣🤣
    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
