Wow... just viewed my swing on video. Definately not what I pictured in my minds eye. Expecting smooth Ernie Els and got just what my name implies - someone hacking weeds! Better than the last time I saw my swing on video - 2 yr ago but I have lots now to work on: more co-ordinated back swing, better hip turn, better follow thru.... etc. etc. etc.

Have you ever thought of sending it to Michael Breed and his show? I have always wanted to do this. So far I have only had the local pro take a look at me swinging but would like to get a variety of opinions.

Why someone would post the swing on the net and ask a bunch of strangers that don't see your ball flight is beyond me. Sounds like a really bad idea. I wonder what advice the net would give some of the more unique golf swings on tour like Jim Furyk's. If it works,it works, if it doesn't it doesn't. It is all about impact and not about how it looks on video.

short of getting lessons with someone very very qualified, which is a luxury to many people, i believe online swing, for self review or others' comment, provides more good than bad...

jim furyk is an exception. most people will be better off following basic swing techs that can be assessed in slow mo on video. sure, it is about impact, but also about pre-impact. i have taped my kids for some time. it is very easy for us to review older tapes to see progress or the lack of. also, we have benefitted tremendously from different pairs of eyes in public. some make sense, some don't. those who do not make sense,,,could be due to my own ignorance or theirs, but the process of sorting things out in and by itself can be educational. i suppose taping and sharing swing for critique can be also helpful for those with performance anxiety. some people find it hard to swing if they feel the camera is on them. perhaps this deconditioning process will help them play better golf under stress on the course. to be able to exclaim that i suck on video is a bold step forward :) ps. there is a youtube video by tiger and harmon where tiger's thesis is what you feel is not real...

Seeing myself on video for the first time was one of the most horrifying experiences. I regularly use in now for self analysis.

Just like anything you read on the net, you have to take feedback with a large grain of salt. Some is helpful and good, some not so much.

Kevin

I guess my personal history is that chunks of unrelated and inconsistent advice is not a good thing.

I wouldn't even think going to see three diffrent PGA pro's for a lesson in one week would be a good idea. Their advice would likely conflict and cause you all sorts of issue. The idea of asking a bunch of strangers to give you their (likely uneducated) advice seem like about the worse idea ever.

you've made a good point, but i think we all function based on our own values and judgements. whereas you think quite lowly of it, i think quite highly of it, but i am sure there is a middle ground where some folks find some use of it. from my own personal experience, i have found that in general, the opinions given by my kid's teacher is not that different from some of the better internet people on this site and others. overall, i consider this whole process to be a better golfer... research, meaning, i enjoy the process of sorting through issues and being confronted with problems that require active evaluation. for instance, my kids also play musical instruments. one camp says that you live under one master and follow every step. the other is to learn to fit your own need from many sources. i am more of the latter camp and over years, i think this approach has helped them develop their own style more naturally. with golf, reading, face to face teaching and learning, discussion with others online all contribute to the big picture. cheers.

I didn't really think I looked like Ernie Els :)... just hoped to look smoother than 6 months ago. I guess my point in posting is that video reveals that my perception of my swing fundamentals is different in many respects than what is actually happening. For instance I see that my hips are not working as well as I thought and definately not the way my instructor taught. On the other hand, my lag has improved dramatically, just as I thought!
