iacas...Why did you switch?

This may have been covered but I missed it. I originally read your review of the Titleist 735CMs and decided to give them a try. I loved them from the first ball I hit and in the bag they went. I have Rifle ProjectX shafts in them and couldn't be happier. Recently though I switched to a Taylor Made 460 TP driver and it got me to looking at the Taylor Made irons as well. I love the look of the TP CBs and was really jonesing for them as well. Then I get on here and look for some feedback and noticed you are carrying the MBs. So that leads me to my question, why did you switch? Is it a review or do you prefer them? I do not think I will part with my 735CMs because I like the combo set but I could try a set of TP Combos really cheap. They are a few years older but probably more in line with what I would look for in an iron. I am still hesitant as they did not get very good press. This leads me to my second question, are the old TP combos as good as the newer irons? Any feedback on this is appreciated. Thanks guys.

I will check it out now. I wonder about your thoughts or anyone elses about the older RAC Combos. Anyone play these clubs?

But used to play the Ben Hogan Apex FTX which are combos. They are great clubs and I still regret getting rid of them. Only the 8-PW are muscle backs, but the 6 and 7 have a small cavity and the 3, 4 & 5 a slightly larger cavity. Beautiful clubs to look at and have a great feel as well. As an aside the Bridgestone J33 Combos look very nice - haven't seen any reviews of them anywhere but I may be able to get a demo set and do a bit of a review of them sometime.

The Bridgestone Combos are a pretty nice set of irons. However, like most other combo sets, they don't seem to "flow" well between the different irons. On paper, a combo set is a great idea. However, blending the transitions is a very difficult thing to practically do. Also, many people often find that even in the PW and 9 iron, a little forgiveness is a good thing. The sole grind on the Bridgestone Combos is fantastic, it will not dig, no matter how steep you may get, or how soft the conditions you play are. I'd take a long look at the J33 cavities. They knocked the combos out of my bag.

The old RAC combos are perhaps the best combo set made. They flowed visually and ball flight wise very well. However, they weren't very forgiving in the long irons which is why I think they never took off in the market place. If you're interested, I'd take a strong look at the RAC cavity back's. Fantastic club, low ball flight for a cavity back, and while they're not very forgiving, you can get away with a less than perfect shot here and there.

Well guys, I spent some time looking at some of these irons today. I found a couple of used sets in a local Golfsmith and tried them in their hitting area. I just do not think anything is going to unseat my Titleists 735CMs. Sometimes I just find the right combo of shaft and head and I stick with it. I played Cleveland TA-7 Tours for almost 3 years. I bought them off a PGA Tour members caddie in the parking lot of the Bellsouth Open one year. He needed the extra cash and his man floated him some irons he didn't like. Anyway, they were TA-7 Tours without the Tour stamped on the hosel and had X-100 shafts that had been soft stepped. Once I got them bent correctly for me I stuck with them and was paranoid to switch. I still regret trading them on Pings. Anyway, all the other sets of TA-7s I tried were never them same. I have tried numerous sets of irons since then and never really found any that I was really happy with. I am getting to that point with the 735CMs. They may not be the best irons but they hit my sweet spot and I really like them better than anything else I saw today. Thanks for all the advice.

They look fantastic as well, if my local shop hadn't had the Z101's I would probably have gone for one of the J33 sets.

I know what you mean re the combo's not flowing, the Hogans were very nice, in fact the mb irons were probably nicer to hit than the cavity backs. A great set (IMHO), not very forgiving though.
