Greets,

Being a new member here I thought it would cool to do the 'what's in the bag' thing that I see so many of you have done.

So I uploaded some pics:

The bag itself:

I have my newer Cleveland CG4's (which I don't hit that well... but further). These clubs got amazing ratings, but they are my first and last internet club purchase I think.

Note the Taylormade 60* wedge. I love this thing, and probably overuse it.

The putter is an old Wilson Staff wedge. I just can't get rid of it though as I really like how I putt with this thing. ;)

The driver is a newer R7 460 - 10.5* with the weights set up for draw bias. Regular flex shaft, standard length. My 'old' driver was a Taylormade Dual 'N' with a stiff 9.5* shaft ( I rarely hit this thing how I wanted to).

The 3 wood is my best club. I love this thing. It feels like air and I can really let it rip. This club alone has me tempted to replace all my long clubs with Callaway 'X' product. The shaft is a regular flex, 65 gram Fuji. Unfortunately I pretty much out hit my driver with this club.

And finally we have a shot of what used to be in the bag vs. what is in the bag. As I've mentioned, I've only been golfing for about 3 seasons. The Callaway Big Berthas helped me immensely. She had a wide sole, and bit back end heavy but she always put out for me.

I was getting tired of the short yardage and the 'chunky' feel of the irons, but they defined forgiveness. The Clevelands net me more yardage, but I'm still 'learning' how to hit them I guess.

So that's the bag.. a pretty eclecitc, hodge podge assortment.

Colin

Thanks.

I've only used the CG4's about 3 times with a range session or two thrown in. I am not opposed to selling them because I feel in the not too distant future, I may go back to something a little more... game improvement oriented. Never know though, I could 'grow' into them.

I'm not sure if this adds to my problem but the shafts are upgraded to stiff True Temper Dynamic Gold. I was told they come with lighter shafts by default.

Hmmmm. Stiff shafts? Did your Callaway's have stiff flex or regular? That may be one factor contributing to your difficulties with the Clevelands (if I read your other post correctly). Did a pro or a fitter recommend the stiff shafts?

You have a nice set of clubs there. I wouldn't worry about the forgiveness of those Clevelands. They have ample perimeter weighting for forgiveness. I would think you will become a more precise ballstriker with those sticks anyway.

The driver can be my nemisis as well. Hit that three wood and watch your scores drop.

Looks like you have room for a 5-wood or hybrid and another wedge.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Thanks.

The CG4's are supposed to be, "game improvement"

I can relate though. I had all sorts of problems with a set of CG4's coming from Big Berthas, it was so bad that I ended moving to a completely different set of irons. The problem I had was that I couldn't really feel the clubhead at any point in the swing, the CMM technology they talk so much about decreases weight along with all the softness properties (as well as rusting). I had the standard, lighter weight shafts, I can't even imagine how lost I would have been with a heavier shaft... I don't want to slam anyone elses clubs, but if you're insterested in hearing more about my entire experience with the tour van, fitting, and Cleveland Golf customer service, feel free to PM me...

@Greensdruid: No I didn't get these fit. I've been told a few times that I'm an 'off the rack' guy. I actually realize these shafts may be beyond me right now, but the seller was promoting them because of the shafts. It's only after I received them that I realized they were a 'tour' style True Temper stiff shaft. That's okay... live and learn.

@SuaSponteMn: do you think the problem could be related to coming from such a club as the Big Bertha? I mean they pretty much define 'game improvement' to me. @Muskegman:

Oh, so they're not S-300's?

Dude, you might need to get that changed ASAP. You wouldn't believe the difference it will make.

Don't think about it as game improvement, that's not quite what I'm getting at. The irons I switched to when the CG4's didn't work out were even less forgiving than the CG4's by most standards, but I hit them WAY better. It wasn't even static weight, it was swing weight. When you get home, grab a 5 iron from each set in each hand and hold them out in front of you, then bounce them up and down like you're jigging for walleye; my guess is that you'll immediately notice how much heavier a golf club the Big Bertha is in the clubhead. I'm not saying this is your problem, but it was definately mine. As for the fogiveness deal, the CG4's are not too much club for you, they just may not be the right club for you. Give em a few rounds just to make sure though.

As for the fitting thing, even if you're a standard length and lie person, I'd still get fittted to confirm.

All this discussion about my irons has me wanting to use them again.

I think I'm heading to the range on my way home from work... this is starting to bug me. lol

I don't think I'm all about one or two brandnames, but what does shock me about these Clevelands is I -never- heard a negative thing about them. I mean you look at any magazine, or e-zine article and these are supposedly some pretty kick-arse clubs for a wide range of skill levels.

Originally before I bought these, I was thinking of something still in the 'game improvement' category but with good distance for a medium swing speed like mine. (I can't swing irons -hard-) I put Taylormade XD irons, Callaway Fusion's and even Nickent NDX Hybrid Irons in that category. The Cleveland's were out for me orignally because of the 850.00 price tag.

I may try re-shafting too. At this point I think my wife is ready to kill me. :D

Colin,

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. I need to start subscribing to GD so I can get all of this.

I'm a new golfer so I have a long way to go in the knowledge department. But I do know something about fitting and shaft flex having spent some time with a fitter in this neck of the woods. If you are thinking of reshafting, by all means go to a reputable fitter and have him (her?) look at your clubs and your swing. They may confirm that the shafts are fine for you, or confirm that they are too stiff. A good fitter shouldn't charge you too much for this, expecially if you end up reshafting. They can make all sorts of subtle adjustments to the clubs that may make them easier to hit. (Full disclosure: I'm not a clubfitter or builder nor am I related to one!). Look for someone PCS certified with more than a few years experience. I'll think you'll find the visit worthwhile.

there are two different components of the club you are discussing. first, the club head is a more forgiving design. second is the shaft which I think is your problem. tour players usually use x-flex shafts. very few non-tour players should be swinging x-flex shafts. they don't have the swing speed. i would not reshaft them, trade them straight up for some clubs with r-300 shafts.

You're probably right.

I didn't mean for my 'WITB' post to become about my iron woes, but since we're already on the topic...

I cleaned up the clevelands and took them to the range tonight, and aside from my normal warmup, I almost hit an entire large bucket with them.

The results? Yea, I just can't hit these consistently. I admit, I don't have a very fast swing. I'm lucky if I can get the 9 iron to 140-150 feet. I've watched my swing on launch monitors (Golftown) and I know I don't have a very fast swing. (my irons are well under 100mph)

I decided to ride it out, making minor swing adjustments. Slight swing path adjustments, but mostly just varied the speed of my swing.

Basically, long story short, I don't think I'm a good enough golfer for these irons. I spray them quite a bit... maybe putting one out of five straight ahead of me. I just can't control these I'm sure a good golfer could put the ball where he/she wants. Sometimes I would intentionally hit a fade/draw and it would actually work. I couldn't do that with my Big Berthas too well.

I'll probably end up selling them. I got them on ebay for a little over 75% of retail so it's not that bad.

Get the 6-iron re-shafted and see how that works. If it's better, get them all done.

If not, sell the clubs.

Don't sell yourself short man, this sounds so incredibly similar to my experience, enough so that I'd even venture to say

it's the clubs Do yourself a favor and try some other irons in that same type of makeup: Mizuno MX-25's, or MX-23's Ping i-5's Taylormade Lt2, R7, or R7tp Callaway X-18 Hogan Apex Edge Titlesist 775, or 804OS Those are a few to start with, and don't worry about the wife, if she get's a little frustrated, just make sure she gets set too; that's what I did!

Best move you could make at this point IMO. Best decision I made this year for my golf game.

Yes, probably the best move I could make given the situation. We're also heading into a snowy winter here so it's not like I'm going to grow into these things anytime soon.

I think I've made my decision to sell them. I will probably put them up on ebay with a fairly low reserve. I'd post them in the marketplace here first, but I don't have 25 posts yet. (Just as an FYI, I do have 100% positive ebay feedback). So maybe if anyone's interested, they can check them out there. I haven't even had them a full month myself. I think this is the last time I'll buy a certain type of club without testing it first at stor. Oh well, live and learn. ;)

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions.

    • Day 48. Got out at lunch to the range to hit some driver shots. Haven’t had much practice there. Focused on setup suggested by @iacas and found some very playable results. I did try to hit a couple of bunker shots after that with much less success 🙃
    • Got a rare birdie on #18 Par 5.  Drive was good and left me in range of the green.  I was @ 210 from the center and needed @ 180 to clear a hazard area.  Green had bunkers lest, right and on back. had been struggling and most shots were short so I took the 225 club figuring back of green hit well. i did hit it well, @ 229 per SS and dead on—kind at the pin.  Ended up @ 1 foot off the back in short rough and lucky for me it was a back pin placement.  Chipped about 15 feet leaving a 3 feet putt for par which I sunk.
    • Yea, so to clarify for me. I do not feel the clubface much in the swing. I feel the weight of the club. I can feel if I hit the club off the heel or toe. When I try to feel if the clubface is open or closed in the swing, I feel it more with my hands, and less of the clubhead. I would classify majority of my swings as not feeling like the clubface does much of all. It feels like I hold the clubface open. In the finish, it doesn't feel like my left hand faces the ground. It feels more like it faces the sky. I will try to be more aware of this, but it was just the sensation I got when I was making what felt like good swings. For the most part, I was hitting slight draws or slight pushes.  On this golf trip, I had to hit a low 8 iron around a tree to the green. I made an alignment adjustment, and actively try to roll my hands a bit more to get it to sling around the corner. I do have a habit of not adjusting how the clubface comes through impact, and I can still hit the ball straight-ish even moving the ball way back in my stance and trying to swing out more.  Yea, my feels are more hands and arms, less actually feeling the clubface.
