Hello all.

I have a set of Mizuno MX-900 irons.  I have had R300 shafts in them since I purchased them.  They are way to whippy and not stiff enough for me and I was recently fitted and told the Project-X 5.5 is correct for me.

I am now wanting to reshaft my irons myself.  I just would like to learn to do it.   The only question I have when buying a set of shafts on Ebay, they are saying "uncut" and appear to be 3/4 of an inch longer then what is considered standard.  Will I need to cut all of these shafts down 3/4 if I purchase them?   That may be a dumb question, but I want to make sure I don't totally mess this up.

Here is an example of what I am talking about:

Thanks for any help!

( any reshafting tips are welcomed too )

If you want, you can cut them all to your desired length to keep them consistant. It looks like the 6 iron will come 39.5"..so cutting .75" would be over length by many manufacturer standards.

You probably don't have the right tools to do everything properly, so I would recommend:

-(1) use a hack saw to cut your shaft lengths

-(2) buy some extremely rough sand paper to and rub the tip (about an 1.5") to secure a good bond between the epoxy and hosel.

-(3) clean the hosels...take a drill and drill out excess epoxy. Buy a wire brush and put that in the drill to completely clean the hosel out.

-(4) Add ferrule to the shaft

-(5) put epoxy on the tip and any excess in the hosel (I highly recommend you use a strong epoxy with glass beads mixed in)....use fishing line or a shim if the shaft doesn't fit the hosel tightly.

-(6) turn the ferrule(this will be very difficult without the right tools) My suggestion would be sand paper.

-(8) Use acetone and wipe ferrule to melt excess epoxy and complete shine

are the Mizunos .355" tapered hosels? if not you'll need to shim the shafts.  many people have found that although the 5.5s were suggested they actually turned out to be too stiff whereas the 4.5 - 5.0 were a better "feel".

the shafts you referenced are .355" taper tips and are "raw" length.  if you buy them don't cut all of them at once.  build your 6 iron first and go hit it.  decide whether it feels right and adjust it accordingly.  that way you won't waste a full set of shafts getting in a hurry.  you'll be glad you did.

Reshafting isn't that hard and will save you a butt load of money. I believe the Golfsmith web site has a section on this under "club building". For cutting shafts I prefer a tubing cutter to a hack saw.

For me the hardest part was putting the ferrules on, so I bought a ferrule tool from Golfsmith; Golf Galxay should have this stuff also.

On a earlier post someone said to just do your 6i with the new PX 5.5. That is a good idea. I can tell you from experience that it really sucks when you've redone all the shafts and find that you don't like them.
