Downswing

I am pretty good in the backswing, with in tolerance. But my major issue is the downswing. I have a horrendous time with the transition, its causing me alot of grief. If i had to describe it, my swing feels like alot of notes out of key. I got not tempo, horrible timing between my upper and lower body.

My questions, i know the whole, you got to start with your hips. I never was able to develop that feeling because i got strong legs. Its hard for me to get that hip feeling. Then there's the whole, you got to start your movement forward before your swing finishes. Or, its a hip bump, or a knee bump. I just have no clue what to do. My swing feels like i am throwing my right shoudler at the ball, and this causes huge problems with comming over the top. Then when i do get in the slot, i have a hard time squaring up because i am use to holding off, protecting a pull or a hook, that i hit these horrible push slices.

How do you start the downswing? There is no right or wrong here, i just want more opinions so that i might find one that sticks.

From what I've read (old school books mostly) and experienced first hand, almost every decent swing has no distinct "start" to the downswing. If you coil properly, your body, arms, and most importantly your clubhead, are trying they're darndest to get back to (and through) your impact position.  During a correct full swing (imho), the backswing isn't yet finished at the top (arms still moving up and back) before the middle starts to unravel. Meaning, the slight hip slide (then turn etc.) begins before the hands are done. This allow the hips to clear, allows the right arm to come down with the elbow tucked on the way down (not tucked on the way up though - you're not Ben Hogan!) and allows you to release completely without feeling like you have to get out of the way of the handle.

Well i got an issue with all that. I have a great turn and coil, but i can't get that to translate into consistancy. I feel like i am throwing the club at the ball.

It sounds like you've "got an issue" with consistency, coming over the top, horrible timing between upper and lower body (feeling a bit disconnected?), hitting slices and pull hooks.  all right.  Why don't you take a lesson or read a great book (Practical Golf, The Full Swing, 5 Lessons, S&T - pick your poison). What happened to "no right or wrong here"?

Ive read this a long time ago. Don't remember it fully, but from what i do remeber its mostly about controlling the swing with your left side/shoulder..... i think.
