Looking for new irons, easier to hit.

In a time long long ago, I used to be a good player...  Now I am a touch older, don't play as much and not as good as I used to be...  Was a .8 index now am 6.8, and should probably be higher than that..  I have a hard time breaking 80 anymore..  Low round is 34-30=64..  But this past season was rarely under 82..

Dunno if this helps and by was on a launch monitor with a Cleveland SL290 and had avg ball speed of 166 launch of about 13 spin rate of 2800-3000 and carry of about 274..  I have never had my irons tested...

My current set up is:

Driver - Titleist 905 S

3 wood - Titleist 13.5 975F

Iron - 2-PW Ping I3 + Blade

Vokey 52 56 60 wedges

I am looking at a new set of irons first, something a lot easier to hit...  Want to dump the 3 wood and 2 iron and eventually get a 4/5 wood and a hybrid..  I don't always use the 60 degree.

I have hit the Nike VR Pro Combos, Titleist AP1 and AP2, Cleveland CG1 CG16 pro and CG16 Burner 2.0..

I liked the VR Pro Combos a lot and the AP2s..  However I am concerned that they will be a little tough to hit.  I was hitting on an optimal day on a range during a demo day..  I was able to hit the 9 6 and 4 of the VR but only the 6 iron of the AP2..  I liked the AP1 as well, however did not like the look and felt I hit the 2 just as well or better...

I would like to try the Ci9s and the Adams CB1 black.. but have not located any demos of those..

I keep leaning toward the look of the Pro Combos and liked the way the flew and felt..  I just keep falling back on if they will be easier to hit than the Ping I3+ blades..  I like the more traditional looks, but my swing just isn't the same it used to be..

Any opinions are welcome.

Irons are a very personal choice, I would suggest at least taking a look at Cleveland though, if you believe their marketing they sound right up your alley. Traditional Design, weighting and look, but a small cavity to increase playability and forgiveness. This is their latest set:

As for the 4/5 wood I personally would keep the 3 wood, maybe go to 4 wood, but a 5 wood and 2-3 hybrid will just be too similar in distance id think but youll have to see for yourself i guess. 2 Hybrids have kinda of gone the way of dinosaur honestly most Hybrids start at about 19-21 degrees.

Most of the irons you're mentioning aren't going to be any more friendly than your Ping i3+ irons. The possible exception would be the AP2's. So why it's always nice to get new golf clubs, I'm not sure that you're going to accomplish what you want to if you purchase any of those iron sets.

It sounds like you seem to gravitate towards more traditional lookng sets and none of those sets are really game improvement. Since you're a Ping player, you may want to look at the i15's if you can get past their looks. They'll be more forgiving than your current i3+ blades or any of the irons sets you described.

I hit them over the weekend Ping I15 and found them very forgiving.  Maybe a little too forgiving.  Even a miss hit felt good. I am going to revisit them though.
