need a little help.......  cant help the slice.....

description:   hitting a x-stiff ust proforce v2 with a 2008 9.5 TM burner

i have a strong right hand grip, baseball 25 years, golf 2 years, working on that, need to work on alignment also, BUT

Ball is starting out left and going right, can be 10 yards, has been 50yds, hit some so far and high above trees that I have cleared tree, the house and the house across the road.  hit it 280-300, hit some further but not consistently, would love to hit a draw, just cant do it.......  swing speed is 105-112 range, can be harder, but only gets worse, BUT then i hit one straight as an arrow, what gives?  divots are usually unfortunately a little right also, pointed well right of target, hit the 7 iron 160-170, but inconsistent with distances........  what am i doing?

you're coming over the top. pretend like you're trying to turn on a baseball and send it to left center, coming from the inside. and like in baseball, don't try and control the clubface, just keep your left arm straight, swing and let the rest happen naturally, without trying to manipulate the club.

My friend is experiencing the same issue, one thing I told him to impliment was to not over rotate your hips on the down swing. Also to not pull his leading shoulder backwards until his club catches up with him. Golf is one of those sports that is difficult to explain with words, I feel the easiest way for people to pick up the game is to just keep their eye on the ball at all times, don't try to "kill it," and don't rotate your body quicker than the club.

Hopefully you see where I'm going with this, I'm new to this site and just wanted to post because I'm teaching a friends currently the wonderful world of golf.

Good luck and take care

If your ball starts out going to the left and then slices back to the right you're definitely coming over the top and, therefore, outside to in.  There are a few different drills you can work on/things you can think about.

First, put a tee about 2" - 3" in front of your ball and about 1" - 2" to the right of it.  Barely push the tee into the ground.  Then, when you go to hit your ball, try to hit that tee as well.  This can help you get a feel for the inside to out swing path.

In conjunction with the first drill, when you tee up your ball, do it in a way that there's a logo or marking showing on the what would be the inside left of the ball if you were looking at it from behind.  So now, when you're addressing the ball, the logo or marking is a target for you to hit at.  This, too, can help you groove and inside to out swing.

Finally you can try the 9 to 3 drill.  Set up and then start with your arms in the horizontal (9 o'clock) position in your back swing.  Then swing as normal except stop your swing when your arms reach the horizontal (3 o'clock) position in your followthrough.  You can start doing this without a ball and then later introduce a ball into the equation.

Unfortunately I can't at the moment so I'll try to describe it better.

First, tee up your ball as normal.  Now, looking from behind the ball and down the target line, place an extra tee about 2" in front of and 1" to the right of the ball.  From the address position, the tee will be 2" to the left of and 1" above the ball.  Now, when you take your swing, hit the ball and then try to hit the other tee.

Address Position:

EXTRA

TEE

Target Line <---------- BALL

YOU

I'm brand new to the game and have a real inconsistent drive. It has more distance than I would have suspected being new with questionable mechanics (I assume) and not a lot of power...a few at the range landed just on the other side of the 250yd sign and rolled. Though most landed around the 225 sign, in that vicinity. Every now and then, I can get a fairly straight drive, but most of the time my drives slice. Sometimes they have a pretty wicked slice on them. I've put the ball further toward my front foot (right foot for me because I'm a lefty) to give my club face more time to come through, and I've closed the club face some. I have slowed down my swing and stopped at the point of contact and found that at the point of contact, my club face tends to be pretty open.

Is there anything I can do to have my club face closed at the point of contact?

First off tee up on as far right of the tee box as you can.  Aim left too.  Second, tee the ball up, address the ball so it is in the middle of your stance.  Take you left foot and point it to the left BUT DO NOT STEP TO YOUR LEFT JUST POINT YOUR TOE TO THE LEFT.  Next step to the right at shoulders width or slightly wider.  Next drop your right foot back off the target line a couple of inches.  Now your driver should be about 4" behind the tee'd ball as the club rests on the ground.  Now swing nice and smooth.  Also you might try a driver that is a closed face of 1 or 2 degrees in addition to the above.  Hope this helps.  thanks
