This year is the first year that I have really started to play the game of golf. I was looking to buy a set of clubs that I could start to play with and I was hoping to get some suggestions about which clubs to look at purchasing. I've been doing a lot of research online and everywhere I've looked has said that there is no need to go out and buy a real good set of clubs since I'm a beginner. That some cheap Wal-Mart type brand will do good enough. However, I'm young and I want a good set of clubs that I can learn with and will be able to play with for a long time. So far the set of clubs that has really caught my eye are the Nike Slingshot irons. Not because of any other reason than I like the way they look out of all of the clubs I've seen. So I don't even know if these clubs would be good for a beginner golfer or if there meant for someone who already knows what they're doing. Any suggestions you could give on a particular set of clubs or things that I need to be looking for in a set of clubs would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I recommend going with one of the "bigger name" manufacturers. You can pick up some good even slightly used clubs at a great price. The Wal-Mart stuff is pretty bad - you won't enjoy the game of golf playing with poor equipment as much.

Dick's has some cheap name-brand stuff on clearout, sometimes. I've seen name-brand irons for $249-$299, bags for $29, and so on. You could pretty well load up for $750 or less.

Start with a cheap putter. In other words, buy one from someone who's been putting badly. They'll likely sell it to you cheaply. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean "crappy" in the case of putters (or other clubs, if you watch for deals)!

Give Ebay a look if you haven't yet.......I'm a lefty as well, and I got a great set of Taylor Made 200 series irons for $100 even. Pretty amazing considering the quality of the clubs.

They would definitely be good starter set for a beginner, very forgiving.

I suggest something forgiving, meaning that even if you don't make perfect contact on every shot, you will still have a good result-usually. You should be able to find a set of Cleveland TA-5 or TA-6 with a free stand bag at some retailers for around $399. The TA-5 was discontinued and replaced by the TA-6, but they are pretty much the same club. Cleveland makes great equipment.

Thank you for your club suggestions so far:
Taylor Made 200 Series Irons
Cleveland Golf TA-6 Irons

I will do some research on these clubs and see what I can find out about them. Feel free to post any other clubs you know about that would be good for a beginning golfer.

I've heard good things about em too.....the only club I've hit was a 2 iron though. It was an 845s (the silver scot version) It felt good, though I must confess I don't always hit the longer irons well.

I may be wrong, but I think there are older 845's, and then there are 845's that are new manufacture. You may find out if there's any difference between the two, and see what people who rated them highly have been using.

The only hole in one I've ever witnessed was hit with an 845. If I had $200 to spare, I'd buy a _lefty_ set of 845s and play golf with 'em sometimes. In fact, I should be able to find $200. Where do you buy these?

Well the search is over....

As of 3:02 PM EST I became the proud owner of a brand new set of Taylor Made 200 Series Irons (3-PW). Complete with graphite shafts and a stiff S90 flex shaft. All for the low, low price of $219.98 (including tax and 2nd day shipping)!

Thanks for the help everyone! I really appreciate it.

Now I'll have to find a matching bag....
