Played pretty well this weekend, and one shot in particular stands out in my mind. Long par 5, my tee shot was pulled into the left rough and ended up with a tree right smack in the path I needed to hit my next shot (about 5 yards in front of the ball). Decided to try "shaping" a hook around the tree just for kicks - a shot I had done on the range occasionally, but with very little consistent success. Aimed the club face at the center of the fairway about 150 yards up to a good lay-up yardage (right thru the trunk of the tree), aimed my body/swing line about 3 feet to the right of the tree trunk and made a smooth swing with a 5 iron. Made solid/clean contact (rough wasn't very "ruff" in that spot) and the ball started out like it was heading across the fairway, then the spin took over and the ball made a hard left turn and headed up the fairway - right to my lay-up spot. The worst thing about it ... I was playing alone and could only stand there in amazement that I actually pulled the shot off exactly as I had visioned it.

Of course, being so pumped at hitting that shot, the next shot was bombed to the back of the green on an upper tier of a 2 tier green with the pin planted in the front and 3 puts later I carded a bogey - but since I bogey this hole most of the time anyway, that was no real biggie ... still love thinking about hitting that "on purpose duck-hook" around the tree ....

So ... anyone else have a "Shot to remember" story to share from this week/season?

This weekend , I was in a sand trap about ten feet deep.  Being a poor sand player overall I wasn't expecting to can one from that position but I did.  I didn't see it but heard it hit the pin and my playing partners cheer. I actually played well from the Sand all day hitting 4 sand shots all close to the pin.  Some days you eat the Bear

Always great to have a shot come out exactly as you envisioned it, not a better feeling while you're out there.

For me this year there have been quite a few great shots. I had my farthest drive ever this year at about 295 yards (downwind on a rock solid fairway, still counting it though). I hit some beautiful 4-hybrid shots, one to save my career low round of 87 on the 18th hole from a fairway bunker and one to par one of the toughest holes on a different course. Some great 5-irons that I stuck close for birdie. I have to say though, some of the best shots I've had this year are those completely pure iron shots that I really haven't hit before in my short golfing career and I really do think it shows how much I'm improving.

Sunday I had three shots that stuck out in my mind.

On 9, I was able to feel confident AND loose over the driver and shaved a dogleg on a 470 yd par 4 leaving myself a short wedge onto the green.

On 15, I was able to hit a choked-down PW into the wind to an elevated green, and control the trajectory so as not to spin it back off the green's false front. A hard gap wedge rips back off that green and 20yds down the fairways there (ask me how I know lol)

On 18, I was able to hit a high draw from 200 that took the exact line I envisioned, landed next to the hole, and just released off the back of the green. Had an easy up and down for a tap in Birdie to end the round.

Those are the shots that keep you coming back for more...

Consistently shooting my index. No real quality shots to speak about. If one part of my game is letting me down, the other parts pick up the slack. Nerves, knock on wood, are all but gone. I'm optimistic and my index has dropped by 0.4.

2 stick out for me

1st, 220 yard drive with a gentle fade, set me up for a 45/50yard wedge to the pin, stuck it sweet landed just on the green and rolled to 3" of the hole, set up my first birdie for a tap-in, so close to being and eagle!

2nd, hit my 7iron of the tee 40yds short 20yards left, another wedge shot but this time after watching phil mickelsons secrets of the short game i applied what i watch and ball popped of the wedge pin high it the green one bounce lost practicly all of its speed and rolled just past the lip and 6" past the hole and that was yesterday lol

    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
