Ok here's the deal.  Ordered my last set of irons.  Wilson iP7's.  Have the DG r300 shafts.  Standard length and lie.  I really like the way these Wilson's set up at address and again if anyone has been following the last few months have been buying iron sets at bargain prices.  Now I also have a set of PE 2's with the same shafts.  I also have a set of TM Firesoles with DG stiff shafts with sensicore in them.

Why is it that I can hit the DG s300 with sensicore, you know a higher ball flight, feel a bit of kick in the shaft and get the distance that I supposed to get with the iron selected to hit.  Now with the r300's the ball flight is lower, more boring, and not nearly as long.  I mean a full club length shorter in most cases and then some.  I also have set of TM Firesole tour grind irons in stiff Pro Force graphite that I hit even better than the s300's with sensicore.

What is it about the r300 shafts that is holding me back?  It absolutely does not make sense to me.  Ok fire away, thanks

shafts of different kinds, ie a DG R300 and a DG S200 vs a DG w/ sensicore R300 and a DG w/ sensicore S200, will have different characteristics...you'd have to compare apples to apples (sensicores to sensicores) to see why the shaft does what it does. you can take a Stiff DG300 and a KBS tour R heavier shaft and you may have the similar differences. If you like the performance of the shaft, why would you want to go to the R300, were they not offered in the iP7s??

I bought them off ebay.  Cheap, and I mean cheap and they look like they hardly have been used.  It just seems wierd to me that I can hit s300 w/sensicore in them in the Firesoles and I can't hit r300's in the iP7's or the Ping Eye 2's.  I can hit my Hogans decently in S4 Apex graphite and S4 steel etc.etc.etc.  But I can't hit r300 shafts which makes absolutely no sense to me.  Ok that's it.  thanks for the input etc.etc.

Found out two things today playing these sticks.  One is I am swinging to much.  In other words my left arm is breaking down trying to bring my club to parallel.  Shortened up my back swing and hit a couple of nice full irons.  However not much distance on them.  For instance par 3 175 yds, hitting to a slightly elevated green.  Pull a 6 and nutted it.  Lands about 15 yds short, no roll etc.  Tee another one up cause I am by myself and same thing, full flush contact and same distance.  The other thing I found out is that the r300 are a high torque shaft, so even though they might be a regular flex type shaft you still have to swing pretty hard to get after it, and that I don't think I can do.  I called true temper on that one.  So there ya go.  I have a ton of sticks I am going to be selling if anyone is interested, Wilson Pi7's, PE2 orange dot, Howson cavity backs, TM Firesole custom series, Founders Club Standard Royale's.  Ok that's it and thanks for the input.

A continuation of this thread.  Ok played 9 on thurs and fri.  Used my Lynx black cat forged cb's with the linx firm flex graphite shafts.  Par 3 210 yds, flew the green with the 4 iron.  Couldn't believe it.   I almost ended up on the blue tee box on the next hole.  Which is about 30 yds from the green at about a 45 deg angle.  Appeared to have about 10 yds or so of roll out.  Played the same little course on Fri pm but this time hit a 5 iron same club set and actually ended up pin high left of the flag on the first cut about 10' away.  Holy crap I says to myself.

Now I ain't gonna say every iron I hit was like this but I was consistenly using a 7 iron from 145-160 and reaching the green and a few times went to the back of the green.  I think it all has to do with not over swinging, you know trying to get the club back to parallel.  I saw a good tip in one of the golf rags that said to turn your shoulders and put your left arm straight across your chest and that is how far back your club should be for your particular swing.  Seems to work for me.  Now if I can only hit those r300's like this.  thanks for listening

    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
