I have recently purchased a set of 2008 ap2 irons from golfsmiths used rack.  The problem that I have is that these things are light! I think these clubs are way to light to be forged steel....im starting to get worried that these clubs are counterfeit.

I doubt golfsmith would put a counterfeit product on any of there racks but I guess it is possible. Maybe the shaft is lighter than you are typically used to playing. I'm sure Golfsmith would be happy to verify they are real no major retailer wants to be hit with selling counterfeit clubs.

Put them on a swing weight scale. should be up near D1-D2. But, are they light to swing or does their mass feel light??

Given that the original AP2 irons ran $1,000 a set when they came out, lots of people had them custom fitted and tweaked at the factory. A couple of things to consider:

  • Lighter steel shafts were available at that time. For example, the NS Pro 105 weighed about 113 grams, vs. about 130 for the standard Dynamic Golf offerings. (NS Pro was linked more closely to AP1 model, but could be gotten for AP2). I test-hit the AP1 and AP2 a couple of times in early 2009, but ended up going with Callaway.
  • Shaft was shortened. Cutting a half-inch off the shaft would lighten it by 3 swingweights.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Yes i think your right...the shaft that is on it is a KBS Tour 90 shaft. I looked this shaft up and apparently its 21% lighter weight according to the KBS website.  Its not the club then its the shafts.  Eventually i'm going to get them re-shafted with dynamic golds to get a bit more swing weight .

You can get a few points of swing weight by changing your grips to winn lite grips if you want something more immediate.
